Wonderstruck (new Todd Haynes film)

Adapted from a book by Brian Selznick, who also wrote the book that Hugo was made from. Consequently this has a similar age aim, which you should keep in mind while watching it. There's a lot to like about this, especially towards the end. Hits some real emotional points. But it does take a little while to get there. The two parallel narratives are also quite effective in the storytelling side of things, again especially towards the end. Visually very captivating if not a bit simplistic, and indeed because it's a film that heavily incorporates deafness, most of when it really comes into its own are the "deaf" scenes which are almost silent-filmesque, quite lyrical and effective (though it does mean a lot of the dialogue is not great).

Overall it does take some time to warm to, but it's rather sweet in the end.
