Fuck's sake. I've had people try and defend Saw with 'you take film too seriously, some of us just want something to entertain us while we relax'. At which point I usually point out even film critics like daft films that serve that purpose, Kermode likes things like comfort and joy and bill and ted; saw is just objectively poor and dull.

It's great, yes, but it's not a serious film. I don't think it pretends to be. I don't think any of Forsyths British films took themselves seriously. I've not seen his American efforts, although I've got Housekeeping waiting for a rainy day.

what makes not serious films lesser?

Housekeeping is stunning. Saw it a year ago and still think about it occasionally

That reminds me I've had Breaking In on my hard drive for ages now, kinda scared to go into it because I know it's going to be a Nothing-Film and have zero movie magic moments unlike Local Hero and Housekeeping

Watched local hero the other month. Quality stuff.

A friend of a friend is doing up the church they used for the outside shots; it's actually on the west coast and I think they used a cardboard replica in the bits where it's visible from the beach.

Dr Rock

I'm going to push for Knight & Day starring Tom Cruise and David Cameron Diaz to be a missed classic, mostly ignored at the time, because Tom's star was in the descendant quite badly at that point. Nevertheless he and Cammy make his a delightful fast-paced, action-packed chase/caper with a feel of Remington Steele or even Midnight Run (It's nowhere near as good as Midnight Run of course), and Tom playing someone a bit mental is fun.

For all their flaws, including stupidity and even amorality, I do think they're very interesting. It's probably the first long-running horror franchise to be developed in the age of internet forums etc., and so (for the most part) they seemed to deliberately avoid a lot of the tropes of previous horror franchises which alienated the core fanbase (e.g. the Elm Street films getting campier and more self-aware). The silly contrivances to keep the films linked with each other, and even keep the franchise going after its main character died early on are interesting to me, and I think even admirable in their audacity. The fourth film in the "classy" Bourne franchise either stole or was beaten in its twist/conceit from Saw IV which amuses me.

Still, I would best sum up my feelings about the series thus:

You lost me with your words but eventually won me around with your Simpsons reference.  I may or may not be being sarcastic.

I did say films like Saw. Hostel is another example of soulless torture porn.

Them's fighting words.

I've had this argument too, about the Transformers films, and the thick cunt I was arguing with's logic essentially boiled down to there being no such thing as a bad film. I pointed out stuff like Die Hard as a counter - highly rated by critics, but nobody is under any illusions that it's a great work of art. It winds me up how low people's standards are, how much rot they're willing to pipe into their brains, and how much more shite comes into my world through their financial support of it.

Yes, yes and yes.
