But this one's better than their 'classic' single...

No it's Girls on Film

It's actually The Reflex. And the best Spandau Ballet single is Lifeline.

You should hear the demo with Damon doing the cockney patter - your anus will seal over in shame and horror.

As Danny Baker rightly spotted during his tenure on the Radio One Saturday shows, the best song on Parklife was not one of the singles, but this :

Yes, Clover Over Dover is exquisite. So many gems on that album.

Everyday I Write The Book was Elvis Costello's best single. From his best album, but that's a whole different argument.

Oh my god - it is, isn't it!

Aged 12 or so, I bamboozled Christopher Woolley * in a 'Give Us a Clue' song guessing game with The Greatest Thing - I couldn't believe the chump had never heard of it.

My favourite song on that, though, is The Element Within Her (and he'd never heard of that one EITHER!!!!)

* 'Real Name, No Gimmicks'
(Hi Chris - in the unlikely event you're reading this, I apologise for my idiotic behaviour)

This Summer by Squeeze is damn fine. I'm not saying it's better than Up the Junction, but more people should hear it.

Nowhere Man

When the hangover strikes and Some Fantastic Place are great ones too, the problem with Squeeze is that they pretty much killed their momentum when the broke up in the 80s and reformed a year or two later.

Some Fantastic Place never fails to reduce me to tears (in a good way)

Open Your Heart was the best Human League single.
Show Me was the best Dexys' single.

Open Your Heart was indeed the best Human League single. Runner up Hard Times/Love Action full 12" mix
This Is What's She's Like was the best Dexys' single.
Veronica and The Other Side Of Summer were surprisingly Elvis Costello's best singles.
Hymn was Ultravox's best single.
Say Hello Wave Goodbye was Soft Cell's best single.

I must have recounted the row I had with a mate's elder brother in the pub one night in the early 90s. He asked me what was my favourite Elvis C album, so I told him. Cue a 20-minute tirade about how it was 'just a pop album' and This Year's Model contained 'quality songwriting.' Which of course just made my opinion even more entrenched, He was practically in tears while pointing his finger almost into my face at the end. I was actually tempted to bite it. Great fun.

It's actually The Reflex.

I can't argue with that. I will be covering it in my upcoming analysis of the career of Duran Duran, which will focus on Rio as the greatest pop album of the 80s.

Blimey! Squeeze are my girlfriend's favourite band and this is her favourite single by them. Are you my girlfriend?

Sleepwalk was the best Ultravox single.
Soul Inside was the best Soft Cell single.

non capisco

Just Got Lucky is the best Jo Boxers single, not Boxer Beat.

Dr Syntax Head

Blue Room is the Orb's best single not Little Fluffy Clouds

Jockice

Borderline was the best Madonna single.
Mandinka was the best Sinead O'Connor single.
Masquerade was the best Skids single.

Dr Syntax Head

Agreed on borderline but Ray of Light is pretty close

Dr Rock

Would love to agree that Borderline is Madonna's best single but doesn't quite match Into The Groove (which one of my exes was supposed to release until Madonna decided she wanted to do it, true fact) or Like A Prayer.

Nah mate, O.O.B.E.

"There's a third world...the world of objective contents of thoughts"

Also agreed on Borderline for Madonna, but it is a close run thing.

Dr Rock

Imagine Me Imagine You was the best Noosha Fox single.

edit or Only You Can.

Double edit - although best song that was never a single is the atypical For Whatever It's Worth

Great piece of music but not a single

Dr Syntax Head

Substitute for love is actually my favourite Madge single. William Orbit recycling some of his solo work for it as well as using the same chord progression as Pure Shores (objectively one of the best pop songs ever made) which is also Orbit's doing. Fucking hell his warm synth pads could end wars it's so soothing.

Jockice

The best Stiff Little Fingers single was Silver Lining.

The best Tears For Fears single was Head Over Heels
The best Prince single was I Would Die 4 U

Not only The All Saints best song, but one of the greatest sounding records of ALL TIME - love Orbit!

All Saints : Black Coffee

Correct.

Best Dexy's is actually There, There, My Dear. Tsk.

itsfredtitmus

Everybody Loves a Happy Ending for tears for fears

Dr Syntax Head

Not correct about All Saints. I won't have it I tell you.

Dead Soon

The best Rolling Stones single is '19th Nervous Breakdown'
The best Who single is 'Magic Bus'
The best Cockney Rebel single is 'Mr Soft'

I'd be interested in a 'Their best single really is their best single thread'. Interested enough perhaps to start one myself.

Dr Syntax Head

Beatles. She Said She Said.
Bowie. Life on Mars.

This thread really is just a 'favourite single by band/artist' thread isn't it?
