Oh god, yes. As bad as this guy is, he'll never be as painful to watch as the nostalgia critic. I can't believe that guy ever managed to accumulate an audience

The James Bond introduction. 'kin 'ell

Also, James Rolfe did a big video on Turkish star wars so fuck this. Is he redneck? I cannae tell?

Also, at around 2:25 did anyone hear a stupid chuckle in the background? That made me laff.

He has a lot to answer for. He's responsible for a lot of infantilisation on the YouTubes that chap.

I will never forget those shit-eater facial expressions as he misunderstands both Rik Mayall and Drop Dead Fred (a movie that doesn't hide its deeper meanings at all and yet he still manages to miss them): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tefhCWeiOc

Imaging having to share a world with people who would choose a sarcastic eye-roller with zero charm willfully missing the point of everything to make a living out of being obnoxious over even the worst performance of Rik Mayall.  Imagine us having to do that. It's not okay.

Yes, that made me laugh too. I also love the odd way he phrases the bit at 3:17 ("That's so lazy! and cheap).

He's either genuinely incapable of figuring out why Mayall is "chewing the scenery" or is pretending not to understand why. Either way makes him a fucking idiot. His own entire shtick is based on overacting!

itsfredtitmus

im watching the review and nostalgiacritic keeps treating the characters as real people. seemingly, the idea of a film's characters being "styled" just doesn't compute with him (computer says no, lol) - "why would you do that??? surely you wouldn't do that?? because OF COURSE she would do that!!" and he just screamed out PINK! when she went into her room

turned off, cba mate, cba

Mr Metokur did a while series of videos about Nostalgia Critic and everything else under the That Guy With The Glasses umbrella. It wasn't quite up to the standards of his usual stuff, but was still utterly compelling in places. It hits most of the drama high/low points, and as I didn't know anything about any of them, I found it really eye-opening. The first episode is here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Srp-pPmCjc8

itsfredtitmus

isn't that guy an alt-rightite? i recognise his yt avi

Barry Admin

I don't think he's alt-right, but he gets thrown into that bracket certainly. Regardless, he's very entertaining and talented.

'Mister Metokur' used to be the 'Internet Aristocrat', one of the more prominent anti-SJW gamergate youtubers responsible for whipping up conspiracy theories around Zoe Quinn. As far as I know he's still very 'anti-SJW', but that may have no bearing on his 'Nostalgia Critic' videos, which might be good, I don't know.

Barry Admin

Yes, that's correct, he was a big instigator of Gamergate, back when it was still seen as a grass roots consumer movement, and before the games media managed to successfully neuter the whole thing by making out it was all just an excuse to engage in misogynistic trolling.

The important thing is that he made Dino Dini really angry.

Thanks, Neil.

The one about Spoony made more of an impact on me, as I, like Metokur and seemingly everyone in the comments section, am one of those people who was a fan in the now dim and distant past. I didn't go so far as to call myself a loyal or regular viewer, though, which must be why the drama around him and TGWTG passed me by. Hell, he thought he was still a fixture at Channel Awesome before tonight. Just goes to show how much I pay attention to these things.

Notwithstanding the skits and side characters, I have some very fond memories of his game reviews. As a big fan of the Final Fantasy series, his FFX and FFVIII videos used to make me howl, even though some of the issues he had with the games were really of his own making. Maybe these were for comic effect, I don't know.

SavageHedgehog

I also enjoyed (though skim watched) those videos, although they are quite mean spirited in places (and yes the term "SJW" comes up a few times). I think there about a million things you could say against Linkara without bothering with which Porn sites he had accounts on as a teenager.

One thing I find fascinating about these internet critics, even the ones I like, is how thin-skinned they are, almost without exception, which would seem to run contrary to existences predicated on essentially pointing and laughing at others' creative endeavours. Mocking anyone who offers (sometimes even constructive) criticism, getting upset whenever anyone asks when their next video is coming; to me it always points to a chronic lack of self awareness.

itsfredtitmus

i lump ashens in with these laugh at bad movies (that usually aren't even bad) channels

Yeah I used to watch Spoony too, but it got a point where I was finding his stuff uncomfortable to watch(and I wasn't even aware of all the social media melodrama going on as I typically avoid that stuff). I had no idea about these Patreon shenanigans, what on Earth was he thinking?

He's going to be properly fucked once those donations have dried up. Is there any precedent for one of these "Professional Youtubers" having to give up and find a standard 9-5 job? Imagine having to put that on your CV.

"Uh, can we ask about this period when you were sat at home playing videogames for three years?"

The last video he did was a review of The Last Jedi, with his girlfriend.  He trotted out the old 'people who don't like this movie are misogynistic' twaddle.  It was infuriating to watch and I had to turn it off after 10 minutes.  I have a lot of time for his older videos though.  As @Sanchez said; his Final Fantasy videos are excellent, as are his Ultima ones and the two Pumpkinhead game videos.  Oh and also his playthrough of Phantasmagoria 2.  I wish that we could get the Spoony of old back.

Seems like the Online Reviewer. uh, industry(?) is having its TimesUp microcosm, with the Nostalgia Critic and his brother as the Affleck and Damon if not the Weinsteins of it themselves. Several of their former employees (of sorts) have put together a document of a long list of grievances (summarised here if you not interested enough in such marginalia).

A mix of some pretty serious allegations, some interesting insights into quite how banal the sensibilities of some of these producers are, and some observations from people I suspect perhaps too lacking in life experience to recognise or cope with standard work-life conflicts (particularly Linkara), but regardless it all sheds some light on what I find to be a fascinatingly odd corner of the web totally lacking in self awareness.

Oh my god, this is priceless. What a staggering catalogue of incompetence.

Just the fact that they didn't bother to draw up contracts for their "talent", meaning they weren't legally employed, is mind-boggling.

It's youtube, it's amateur, isnt that expected?

This was a supposedly professional production company that did pretty well for itself at one time, so all this stuff coming out about how utterly clueless they were is pretty fascinating, but your mileage may vary I guess.

I do find the fact they didn't technically employ (or actually pay) any of their content creators other than Doug Walker to be kind of incredible. Basically it seems like they took advantage of a lot of inexperienced young people who were too naive to release they were being exploited and getting fuck all back in return save for "exposure".

The collapse of Channel Awesome is a wonderful source of schadenfreude (and possibly grounds for a split topic). Just today, Angry Joe - who is arguably CA's biggest draw - has announced that he's no longer affiliated with the platform. Soon it'll just be Doug and Rob Walker at this rate.

I've just finished watching this series of videos.  Thank you so much for the link.  Fascinating stuff.
