Roseanne worked on a factory assembly line, and Dan did construction, when he could get it, which wasn't all the time. That's working class, isn't it? How were they ever middle class? Does it mean something different in America?
It sort of does, yes. The ruling class worked as hard as possible to eliminate the phrase "working class", largely succeeding in pretending that everyone who had a job outside the fast food industry was part of the same middle class. And ensuring "upper class" is never mentioned either.

I remember Michael Moore talking about this kind of thing on R4. His father was a blue-collar worker (in a car plant) and was the sole breadwinner but the family had two cars, a holiday home and (I think) a boat.

He said that the kind of living standard that many in the UK would associate with the middle-classes, used to be a reality for a significant amount of US manual workers. IIRC, Moore said it was more useful to think of Americans as white or blue-collar, rather than working or middle-class – as the latter have different connotations over here.

Moore discussed about how – and this feeds in to DIU's post – the wealth gap had been shifting and this was particularly evident in blue-collar workers' lives. Even if two blue-collar partners are working, they can't aspire to afford the kind of lifestyle that workers of his father's generation had.

Easy to forget that Trump is upper class.

With impeccable timing, this video essay on Roseanne tackles the depiction of the working class and the weird US class structure.

I'm waiting for the Grace Under Fire reboot, myself.

I think the best episode of the season was on last night. It kind of reminds me of the old show in a way... If you remember the episode where DJ doesn't want to kiss Gina.... Roseanne is trying to make it evident around the house that the bigotry comes from Dan's side. Later on, Roseanne and Jackie are at their diner, and when Mr. Johnson, a black man comes, they become so frightened by his presence, close their register, lock the doors, and then when the man says "I'm Mr. Johnson, Gina's father," Roseanne says "Oh, why didn't you just say you were her father?". He asks if she asked all her customers their name.

Notice, Chuck is in the episode. It's Dan's black friend from way back who was center around a scene where Dan (and his other white friends at the poker table) want to know what he thinks about DJ not wanting to kiss a black girl for a school play. Chuck asks if everyone is so interested because HE is black, and Dan says yes.

The end scene is great, where finally Dan, who said DJ shouldn't have to kiss her, realizes the simple truth and tells DJ... "IT'S JUST SKIN" as he grabs a lump of his own skin, and finally convinces him to do it. DJ says "alright" very flippantly, like a child, because they aren't quite blueprinted yet, even though he was afraid of possible peer pressure in the class.

Pretty good episode last night

Bhazor

She was also retweeting a link to childporn a couple weeks ago. She's KOOKY!

jobotic

She's also tweeted her support against the Cultural Marxists that have imprisoned heroic Tommy Robinson hasn't she?

What a shame. Old Roseanne was wonderful. The programme and her. Don't think I'll bother with this.

Bhazor

Its fitting. Old upper middleclass fuckwit who thinks they're salt of the earth working class. It's basically the core demographic of both Trump and Brexit and probably most other far right wing nutbags.

The show is shit too.

up_the_hampipe

Wanda Sykes has left the show as head writer. Roseanne has apologised and is leaving twitter http://variety.com/2018/tv/news/roseanne-wanda-sykes-ape-joke-1202824000/

McChesney Duntz

Woah. It's going to be really interesting/mortifying to watch how the reactions fall out from this...

petril

was bound to happen sooner or later.

Brundle-Fly

What is it that these people do not understand about the 21st century and social media? How could she not realise that was a horrendous thing to post? Baffling.

Old people. Imagine the stuff your old mad uncle used to say. Except now they're doing it in front of millions of people.

Kelvin

Very disappointed to hear she'd post something like that. Knew her politics had got pretty dubious, but not that bad.

It's nowhere close to the worst she's said online. Like I said she was retweeting child porn from one of those "We fight peadophiles" groups that you wouldn't let anywhere near children. The kind of feckless cunts who still post "Anonymous memes" because they're pro hackers.

Speaking of which shes tweeted a whole lot of 4chan shit. Old thick racists meeting in the middle with angry young introverts.

Nowhere Man

I'm just imagining how fucking pissed off all the cast and crew who have worked on that show for years must be feeling right now.

Alberon

I've never really paid much attention to her politics. Has she always been fucked in the head or is this some sort of Trump-style dementia setting in?

She was always left-of-center until she got obsessed with Zionism and then began a hatred of Palestine.. (Of course, that's not trendy enough yet).

Goldentony

saddest part of all this is that now we may never find out who Jackie

Glebe

Fucking hell, what a complete moron Roseanne has turned into.

Nowhere Man

Just do a reboot with the rest of the cast called 'Dan' and say that Roseanne died. The previous season was actually a story written by Dan Conner to cope with his wife's death.

a peepee tipi

Always been a bit fucked in the head, lost a lot of respect for her when she admitted to lying about being a victim of incest. I guess  that's at least somewhat understandable and forgivable coming from a probable crazy, but she really is just a celebrity version of the type of insane woman who you'll find demanding a minuscule refund at the convenience
