From a post on Twitter, I thought it'd be a fun thing to replicate here. As in the title: what's your favourite album of every year from 2000 to 2017? I'll start:

00: The Avalanches - Since I Left You
01: Stereolab - Sound-Dust
02: Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
03: Broadcast - Haha Sound
04: Madvillain - Madvillainy

another Mr. Lizard

As with Vodka Margarine's choices, mine are honest and unrevised - I may have changed my mind on a few of these in intervening years, but they were my picks in December of each year in question. (20-year-old me selected 'Fiction' by the Comsat Angels as 1982's best LP! So, not 'Hex' or 'You Can't Hide Your Love Forever', then. What a buffoon I was)

2000 Relationship Of Command - At The Drive-In
2001 Let It Come Down - Spiritualized
2002 Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots - Flaming Lips
2003 Skull Ring - Iggy Pop
2004 A Grand Don't Come For Free - The Streets
2005 I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning - Bright Eyes
2006 Lost and Found - Daniel Johnston
2007 Proof Of Youth - The Go! Team
2008 My DNA - Manda Rin
2009 Popular Songs - Yo La Tengo
2010 Have One On Me - Joanna Newsom
2011 Last Of The Country Gentlemen - Josh T. Pearson
2012 One Day I'm Going To Soar - Dexy's
2013 mbv - My Bloody Valentine
2014 Soused - Scott Walker and Sunn O)))
2015 Payola - Desaparecidos
2016 The Catastrophist - Tortoise
2017 How Did I Find Myself Here? - The Dream Syndicate

Hey, nothing wrong with Fiction, 'What Else!?' is one of my favourite tracks :-)

Serge

00: Grandaddy: The Sophtware Slump
01: Daft Punk: Discovery
02: Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Yanqui U.X.O.
03: Super Furry Animals: Phantom Power
04: Iron And Wine: Our Endless Numbered Days
05: CSS: Cansei De Ser Sexy
06: LCD Soundsystem: 45:33
07: LCD Soundsystem: Sound Of Silver
08: Earth: The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull
09: The Horrors: Primary Colours
10: The Soft Pack: The Soft Pack
11: Sun Araw: Ancient Romans
12: Dan Deacon: America
13: John Grant: Pale Green Ghosts
14: Caribou: Our Love
15: Ezra Furman: Perpetual Motion People
16: Les Halles: Transient
17: LCD Soundsystem: American Dream

Kind of feel like I'm almost cheating with '45:33', as it didn't come out as a physical release until 2007, so in my mind it comes after 'Sound Of Silver', but trawling through 2006 releases, I can't find anything that I liked half as much, and the original digital release was in 2006, so it counts! 'Geogaddi' and 'As Heard On Radio Soulwax Vol. 2' both came close enough to knock 'Yanqui U.X.O.' off the top spot for 2002, but then I remembered 'Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls', and that made it the winner.

I went through a bit of an album-buying limbo from the late 90's to the early 2000's, in between the decline of the CD and the rise of the download, so the first few years of the new millennium are patchy. Then there was the Great Hard Drive Crash of '09, which means I don't have much up to that year either.

I could sift through my CDs but I can't be bothered checking all the release dates. These are from what I have on my PC now.

Something happened in my brain around 1998, and new stuff just didn't seem do it for me anymore - so this is the few actual new albums I bought, plus where my musical nose led me.

2000 : XTC - Wasp Star
2001 : 1920's Hot Jazz bands (Bix Beiderbecke / Fred Waring / Charleston Chasers) (virtually everything from 1928 is a solid gold cracker!)
2002 : Fred Astaire / Paul Whiteman Orchestra / George Gershwin musicals - my top picks : 'Oh Kay' (1926), 'Of Thee I Sing' (1931), 'Pardon My English' (1932)
2003 : Leslie Sarony / George Formby / 1930's Dance Bands (Jack Hylton / Carrol Gibbons Savoy Orpheans)
2004 : Mansun - Kleptomania
2005 : Kate Bush - Aerial
2006 : Pre-1920's music - Billy Murray / Aileen Stanley / Billy Jones & Ernest Hare (excavated back as far as 1892 - which led naturally to . . .)
2007 : Wagner 'bleeding chunks' Highlights, which soon turned into . . .
2008 : Wagner Complete Operas - obsessive search for best version of each opera in stereo and mono : best singers / conductor & orchestra / sound quality (anything by Decca in the 60's is unbeatable)
2009 : Everything Everything - Photoshop Handsome (single)
2010 : Disco compilations (Disco Discharge / Disco Demands / Disco Love) / 1970's singles compilations (100 Hits)
2011 : Kate Bush 50 Words for Snow
2012 : Disco albums : Donna Summer / Meco / Boris Midney / John Davis & The Monster Orchestra
2013 : 1970's albums : Queen / ELO / 10cc / Todd Rundgren / John Martyn / Judee Sill
2014 : Beatlemania tribute singles (eg. We Love You Beatles / Ringo For President / Saint Paul)
- - - -
since then I've mostly been buying the Big Finish Doctor Who spin offs (Jago & Litefoot, 4th & 6th Doctors).

I did hear a new song I absolutely loved a few weeks ago, though :
Black Sedan - Love on Love

Z

I think this is a terrible thread idea but it's also reminded me of a bunch of great stuff I've forgotten (King Knight! Endless Summer! Berlinette!) so I'm pretty torn.

00: D'Angelo - Voodoo (a lot of contenders though)
01: Daft Punk - Discovery
02: The Disintegration Loops (nothing I especially care about, mind)
03: a few contenders, nothing I care too much for though
04: Madvilliany/Funeral
05: Common - Be
06: J Dilla - Donuts
07: Untrue (ludicrously strong year)
08: Portishead - Third
09: the Antlers - Hospice
10: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (very strong year)
11: Shabazz Palaces - Black Up
12: Kindred
13: Rival Dealer
14: Nothing
15: E-MO-TION
16: Avalanches - Wildflower
17: Nothing
18: TBA, seeing as I'm largley listening to hard bop jazz this year so far, I wouldn't be surprised if I don't listen to anything from 2018 until this phase wears off

2007, 2010 and 2015 all have 5+ albums that I'd rate above anything from several of those years. 2014 and 2017 in particular were spectacularly weak years as far as albums are concerned. Black Messiah is probably out and out the best album of 2014 but he released it so late in the year that I've a tendency to forget about it entirely, only just remembering it now.

45:33 is the best LCD Soundsystem album by a good distance

Damn! I always forget that this was actually released in 2000 - I think because 'Swastika Eyes' came out at the tail end of 1999, I always think that this did as well......so this would undoubtedly replace Grandaddy as my 2000 choice. Sorry Grandaddy.

Nice choice.

Thanks, it was tough to decide between that and Nine Inch Nails, Portishead, Deerhunter, Grouper or Tears Run Rings really. Didn't expect 2008 to be one of the strongest years

It was 2017, the year where Kendrick Lamar's worst album topped most end of year lists.

2006 had Donuts, Silent Shout, Hell Hath No Fury, Harmony in Ultraviolet, The Devil and God..., Burial, Ys

2000 Broadcast - The Noise made by People

Christ, this is a task that's going to ages to compile because there is no way I'm going to wade through my CDS and vinyl squinting at dates as well as downloads. I'm out.

I liked the one with  Fit But Don't You Know It by The Streets.

That's all your getting.

The early years of the 2000s were great, looking back. A few years later (post-2005), it all seemed to have gone to shit.
