The early years of the 2000s were great, looking back. A few years later (post-2005), it all seemed to have gone to shit.

With the obvious exception of the sixties, what is about the middle of a decade when it all becomes diminishing returns for about four years?

rue the polywhirl

I'm too lazy to fill out a favourite album for every year so I'll just pick Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works 2000-2017 as a catch-all fantasy pick.

Yeah, 2000 to about 2008 was a doddle, then Spotify happened, not being a youngster any more happened and I just kind of disconnected from the current, now unlimited access to (almost) the entire history of recorded music was a reality and I could get lost in the rich tapestry of everyone's back catalogue. So from that point on, I really had to think about what I was listening to that was actually contemporary.

Trying to do this as honestly as possible, but struggling to remember my tastes of 2002 and 2004 in particular.  Mine is an incredibly white and male-dominated indie schmindie list, it turns out - I've no doubt forgotten shitloads of great albums though.

00 - Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump
01 - The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
02 - The Coral - The Coral
03 - Belle and Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
04 - Mountain Goats - We Shall All Be Healed
05 - Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
06 - Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther
07 - Okkervil River - The Stage Names
08 - Okkervil River - The Stand-Ins
09 - Super Furry Animals - Dark Days/Light Years
10 - The National - High Violet
11 - King Creosote and Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine
12 - Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
13 - Kurt Vile - Wakin' on a Pretty Daze
14 - The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
15 - Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear
16 - Richmond Fontaine - You Can't Go Back If There's Nothing To Go Back To
17 - Father John Misty - Pure Comedy

Gregory Torso

I don't know why I spent my evening doing this

2000 - Bright Eyes - fevers and mirrors*
2001 - Cannibal Ox - the cold vein
2002 - Deerhoof - reveille**
2003 - Deerhoof - apple o**
2004 - Autolux - future perfect
2005 - Paavoharju - yha hamaraa
2006 - Scott Walker - the drift
2007 - Wingtip Sloat - add this to rhetoric
2008 - Coughs - fright makes right
2009 - Shit And Shine - girls against shit
2010 - Cheveu - 1000
2011 - The Skull Defekts - peer amid
2012 - bollocks to this year
2013 - Rashad Becker - traditional music for notional species
2014 - nothing
2015 - CCTV 7" (not an album but best thing in that year)
2016 - Porest - modern journal of popular savagery
2017 - too soon

Not much to pick from for the last five years or so, not that there hasn't been loads of music I've liked, more like I've stopped giving a shit about albums.

*only thing on the list I feel embarrassed about, fucking Bright Eyes, but that album was my favourite in 2000.

**2002 was hard to choose, tons of stuff I loved - out hud, xiu xiu, xinlisupreme, iran
2003 was hard as well - william basinski, maher shalal hash baz, noxagt
but honestly, Deerhoof ruled my world back then.

2005 and 2006 were fantastic years for music.

if I were to pick one it would have to be The Left Banke's much-maligned second album "Too"

GET LOST

I don't know that one. Is that one by Angry Forum Poster (2018)? That's from this year though so it doesn't count although I'm sure you've been enough of an ultra-unnecessary, cantankerous chump for all the preceding years that you could make a Top 100 list out of it.

DrGreggles

2000 Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump
2001 Spiritualized - Let It Come Down
2002 Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots

00: Lambchop - Nixon

I won't do this any more than this post but I knew I'd think of stuff once I walked away and would change this now for

00: Q & Not U - No Kill No Beep Beep

and to echo some above-named the hardest years were 2003-2006, whether that's because they were especially good OR I was enjoying my musical salad days of playing in lots of bratty bands and having Soulseek running 24/7 i do not know.

BlodwynPig

Broaden your tastes, lots of good obscure stuff floating about in all those years

purlieu

Yeah, without wanting to be all "look at my diverse taste!!", I don't think there's a year from this century that I don't own at least 30 albums from. I'm sure there are at least a handful of records from each year that would suit most tastes around here.

Good call. The most underrated underrated band of all time.

rue the polywhirl

Alright, I'm feeling a little less lazier (chronic fatigue syndrome) and I've raked over a complete list now. I've chosen each album according to what was my favourite at the time, no after-the-fact favourite albums here (to the best of my abilities).

2000: U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind
2001: Daft Punk - Discovery
2002: Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
2003: Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power
2004: High Contrast - High Society
2005: Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
2006: Boris - Pink
2007: Stars Of The Lid - And Their Refinement Of The Decline
2008: M83 - Saturdays = Youth
2009: Tarot Sport - Fluff Buttons
2010: Klaxons - Surfing The Void
2011: Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto
2012: Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss
2013: Ducktails - The Flower Lane
2014: Aphex Twin - Syro
2015: Blur - The Magic Whip
2016: David Bowie - Blackstar
2017: Fitness Forever - Tonight

2000 and 2009 were the most challenging years to pick. (Not a big album buyer in 2000, real dearth of stand-out albums in 2009 that I could call personal favs.)

the ouch cube

2000 - Chris Morris 'Blue Jam' (it was on a CD, it was an album as far as I'm concerned)
2001 - Foetus 'Flow'

2003 - Killing Joke s/t
2004 - Skinny Puppy 'The Greater Wrong Of The Right'
2005 - The Mars Volta 'Frances The Mute'

2011 - Gang Gang Dance 'Eye Contact'
2012 - Swans 'The Seer'
2013 - Corrections House 'Last City Zero'
2014 - Dead Rider 'Chills On Glass'
2015 - The Icarus Line 'All Things Under Heaven'
2016 - Arabrot 'The Gospel'
2017 - still catching up, possibly Oxbow 'Thin Black Duke'

2009 - Flaming Lips 'Embryonic'
2014 - Dead Rider 'Chills On Glass'

highlighting these three

i. i absolutely hated this, this was the one that convinced me the Bixler/Rodriguez axis was done, but i was 22 and i have changed a lot and realised P4K were wrong about tons of stuff and led me down bad paths, so i might go back in here.
ii. this one is underrated but is a bit over-mastered, fatigue sets in partway through, even though there are loads of good songs scattered throughout.
iii. very good record! i have my 2014 list somewhere an am reasonably sure this is #2. my then girlfriend HAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED this. was funny.

hmmm... I selected Embryonic since it contains easily my favourite stretches of the Lips' music and I find much of it genuinely moving rather than just interesting (as I usually find with them) - however, I've probably never listened to it all straight-through in one go. Maybe I should have specified disc one, though it'd be a shame to lose 'Sagittarius Silver Announcement' and 'Watching the Planets' especially (and 'I Can Be a Frog')

Ornlu

Not super happy with this, but then I've only really been paying attention to what music comes out what year for the last few or so.

2000 - Vaz - Demonstrations in Micronesia
2001 - Bethany Curve - You Brought Us Here
2002 - ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes
2003 - Akercocke - Choronzon
2004 - Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
2005 - Daikaiju - Daikaiju
2006 - Tool - 10,000 Days
2007 - Alcest - Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde
2008 - M83 - Saturdays = Youth
2009 - Sonic Youth - The Eternal
2010 - Buke & Gase - Riposte
2011 - Yamantaka // Sonic Titan - YT // ST
2012 - Japandroids - Celebration Rock
2013 - Thought Forms - Ghost Mountain
2014 - Ought - More Than Any Other Day
2015 - No Spill Blood - Heavy Electricity
2016 - White Lung - Paradise
2017 - Guerilla Toss - GT Ultra

2016 - M83: Junk
2017 - Toro y Moi: Boo Boo or Sampha: Process

Crabwalk

#51
This was quite an enjoyable endeavour actually, trying to objectively recall my most loved contemporary records for each year. There's a definite split between the first 10 years where I was spending most of my money on old records, and from 2010 when the internet became more of a tool for me to explore new stuff.

2000 - Lambchop - Nixon
2001 - Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World
2002 - Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
2003 - OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
2004 - Arcade Fire - Funeral
2005 - eels - Blinking Lights & Other Revelations
2006 - Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther
2007 - Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
2008 - Tindersticks - The Hungry Saw
2009 - Mastodon - Crack the Skye
2010 - Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti - Before Today
2011 - Destroyer - Kaputt
2012 - Goat - World Music
2013 - Fitness Forever - Cosmos
2014 - The Soundcarriers - Entropicalia
2015 - Jessica Pratt - On Your Own Love Again
2016 - Kiran Leonard - Grapefruit
2017 - Fitness Forever - Tonight

Extremely tough years to choose were 2007, 2010 and 2015. For the latter, the Neon Indian record would've been my choice most other years.

studpuppet

Based purely on iTunes stats.

2010: Grinderman - Grinderman 2
2011: Matilda the Musical (Original Cast Recording)
2012: Tracy Thorn - Tinsel & Lights

2015: Thee Oh Sees - Mutilator Defeated At Last
2016: DJ Shadow - The Mountain Will Fall
2017: I got nuthin

Crabwalk

That's cheating, studpuppet! My list would look very different if based on what I've listened to most since those years. I bailed on a lot of those 00s acts pretty swiftly...

And if you've got nothing for 2017, may I suggest following me and rue the pollywhirl into the joyous world of Fitness Forever's 'Tonight'...

Yes, everyone should listen to Vega Intl Night School!

Really enjoyed making this list, too.

Every Neon Indian album was a contender to me - Era Extrana just happened to fall short because it came in a strong year.
