Every Neon Indian album was a contender to me - Era Extrana just happened to fall short because it came in a strong year.
'Era Extrana' was fighting it out with Gruff Rhys' 'Hotel Shampoo' for second place behind Destroyer. Great albums but 'Kaputt' is a masterpiece.

I'd like to partake in this thread but I've barely any idea what year most of my favourite lp's came out. So I'm going to have to fire up foobar and sort my cd collection by date for most stuff.

Doing it blind:
2000 - Bent - Programmed to Love
2001 - plaid - Double Figure
2002 - Sharon Jones - Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Actual coincidence those are consecutive.

Key

2001 The Other People Place - Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe
2002 Keith Fullerton Whitman - Playthroughs
2003 Prefuse 73 - One Word Extinguisher
2004 Elizabeth Anka Vajagic - Stand With The Stillness of This Day
2005 BoC - The Campfire Headphase
2006 Joanna Newsom - Ys

Yeah - but it avoided sitting there thinking about it for a week and a half.

And if you've got nothing for 2017, may I suggest following me and rue the pollywhirl into the joyous world of Fitness Forever's 'Tonight'...

I won't find an album I like from 2017 until around five years' time.

The early years of the 2000s were great, looking back. A few years later (post-2005), it all seemed to have gone to shit.

Demon Days was the last great album.

I thought the worst years were between 2004-2007, 2004 being the worst year.. however it did not feel as bad at the time.
But looking back it was shit.

I think things improved massively around 2009, i think the dawn of Youtube and alternative media may have had something to do with it. I think 2010-2013 were the best years for music since the mid 90s.

Spot on.

Those 2000 years always give me what I can only describe as the feeling of having an empty stomach whilst being drowned in Maccabees promo CDs, very bland Bloc Party albums and Pete Doherty front covers.

I suppose if you got all your music from the NME it was probably a pretty grim time.

I didn't luckily, but that was the era i 'grew up' in during uni. But, to be honest, even underground stuff didnt get me that excited in that mid/late 2000s era until 2010. Gang Gang Dance blew my mind, and that was it for a while. There was too much folktronica about, too. Anyway, im saying nothing new here.

They're my second favourite group, I'm likely to have their albums among my favourites. I certainly didn't get into them because of the NME.
Anyway, 'twas only a response to somebody naming the Maccabees, Bloc Party and Pete Doherty, which seems like a very NME-focused list of artists is all.

Fair enough. My uni experience from a similar time was mostly tainted by 'electro-indie'/'nu-rave' and other similar stuff, which was similarly bleak for the most part, but I dunno if it ruined the whole era for me. Looking at my collection it seems that around 2005 is the point where in terms of guitar-centric music I started focusing more on back catalogue stuff rather than new music, but there's a lot of electronic stuff from the second half of the '00s that I love.

You know, I don't think I've ever listened to anything that could be described as folktronica.

Aroung the time of Gang Gang Dance there was also Mux Mool, Lorn and Bibio, all amazing. Type had a good few releases with Altar Eagle. School of Seven Bells were on the go. Oh and Solar Bears.

Around 2006/7 was when DnB got really boring though

Whereas Manic Street Preachers, Coldplay and some bloke from Mansun aren't?

I'm sure they've all been hyped up by the NME in their own time, but I also included a lot of artists who they haven't been, whereas the list I made my little half-serious response to was all NME-approved landfill indie.

I'm not trying to suggest I have some deeper knowledge of music, because I don't, I've not heard or even heard of almost all the music in this thread so far. The list I remarked on just seemed very limited in scope, that's all.

Ha! It just took me by surprise, that album, really. I was properly obsessed for a while. I mean if you asked me now to name my favourite record that came out in 2010, and to name the 2010 record I listen to most these days, the obvious answer would be the correct answer, but at the time I was more taken with The Grime And The Glow, for whatever reason.
