So i was listening to Fancy there by Iggy Azalea and the Charli XCX chorus/hook/whatever on it is really so damn good. It's a bit surprising she hasn't been paid a bunch to do more of them.

What're some of your favourites? Both hooks and people doing them?

Golden E. Pump

Peter.

My serious answer - 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go'. Imagine writing that. It's a slice of pop heaven that everyone knows. Doesn't get enough credit for being a perfect pop song.

Better than Wham Rap? Behave.

Dr Rock

I think Young Guns (Go For It) is the best early Wham! song.

Hey sucker
(What the hell's got into you?)
Hey sucker
(Now there's nothing you can do)
Well I hadn't seen your face around town awhile,
So I greeted you, with a knowing smile,
When I saw that girl upon your arm,
I knew she won your heart with a fatal charm.
I said "Soul Boy, let's hit the town!"
I said "Soul Boy, what's with the frown?"
But in return, all you could say was
"Hi George, meet my fiancee"
Young guns,
Having some fun
Crazy ladies keep 'em on the run.
Wise guys realize there's danger in emotional ties.
See me, single and free
No tears, no fears, what I want to be.
One, two, take a look at you
Death by matrimony!

Then again Bad Boys is excellent too. George just pissed hooks.

Golden E. Pump

He really did. 'Freedom', 'I'm Your Man' and 'Club Tropicana' too. That's not even going into his solo career.

Even a ballad like 'Careless Whisper' had a banging hook.

Oops! Wrong Planet

But seriously, fucks: just about anything from Smokey Robinson.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

The Grooviest Girl In The World by also-ran '60s group The Fun & Games is one of the hookiest pop songs ever made, so much so that it sounds like an Austin Powers-style retro pastiche. It's amazing.

Those guys shat out hooks for breakfast. Perhaps that was their undoing.

Elephant Candy would be improved tenfold, however, if the opening couplet was: "Elephant, elephant candy/Did you know that elephants are randy?"

Carpet Rash by Total Control has got one of the greatest chorus licks I've ever heard. Just absolute fucking guitar heaven, the riff that keeps on giving. It's a seven minute tune but I always listen to it twice in a row.

It's a shame that they never made anything even half this good and most of their other stuff is properly shite, and when I saw them play this track live they did this fucking gash electronic rendition of it and I hated the whole set, but I don't really care because being responsible for the studio recording of it alone makes me respect them hugely as a band. THIS SONG RULES.

Doesn't make sense. CHIPS though. CHIPS. Do you see what I'm getting at? Or am I just as well showing a dog a card trick?
