I'm not sure how it could have been taken remotely seriously. It was a non-specific bit of everyone is a horny slut Clowne universe-building.

I'm not so sure, I didn't read the post in it's original location and have no opinion on it per se. But I do think the specificity of Spoons and the fact that poo might well have been travelling for his job makes it somewhat believable at face value. I mean is poo always in character? It seems legit to think he sometimes isn't.

rue the polywhirl

Bit weird to take the moral high road so egregiously yet also taking the name of Serge in vain. Chill out a bit, maybe not get so hamstrung by your own personal demons or whatever else is bugging you?

I wasn't doubting he was there!  But if you believe his posts are the solemn original views of a real human then...dunno what to say to that

I'd be surprised if they were all 100% a character though. I'm uncomfortable getting into this too much. Sufficed to say I think it's fair to read some of his stuff at face value.

Sorry to bump The Boston Crab/Shay's old thread but I am about to fuck off so I thought I'd let yous  know without cluttering the place up with a new thread.

I'm not flouncing permanently, just having a break a la Serge. It's the Sausagefest issue again, I'm afraid. The casual misogyny, such as comments on the physical appearance of politicians or actors who are female  that is almost always unchallenged. And the hypocrisy around porn. Posters who are thunderously righteous, highly principled and meticulous in their detailed understanding of, say, US politics, veganisism, Corbyn, Dr Who, carbohydrates and substance misuse are quite content to ignore the fact that when they are fapping away in their wankpits they are almost certainly watching people who are coerced, trafficked or forced into porn, in amongst the enthusiastic and empowered people who really love their well-paid jobs of course. And I know that some of you conceal or lie to your partners about your porn use, that's non of my business but I thought I'd mention it while I'm here, that's something you ought to think about IMO. I see in a recent 'who's your favourite porn star?' thread, someone even said something about the dodgy stuff that keeps popping up and how you can't be sure about what you're watching. No one seemed to care much, too busy poring over the semantics of a comment in the Brexit thread or a conspiracy theory about 9/11.

Here's the post that made me think, 'Why do I bother with this place?'

Now I love poo in character as much as the next Clowne apocalypse VERSUS filth-loving person but he drops character in the cycling thread and it felt like this was in a similar vein. He doesn't make a derogatory comment about himself, he's just a man. A man staring at sluts i.e. women having a drink after work or meeting a colleague or taking their mum out for coffee or getting mullahed on Pimms, whatever. I hated reading that and I don't like being part of a forum where comments like that go unchallenged and unmoderated. There's loads, I'm really not picking on poo, it is just a pertinent example of why I'm off.

So, tara ya shitters, have a good summer, I'll be back in a bit and don't let that cup of tea I left on your bedside table go cold.

You're right. Although I always mean it to be non-gender specific, I can see how coarse and misogynistic this might come across, even with context. I'm not really a creepy perv, honest, and this was very much written "in character", as you put it. Obviously what failed to come across is that the joke is really on "me" and the desolation and shamefulness of men in general. Really sorry that it has had this effect on you. It's sad that the board is coming across this way for some people. Maybe things do need to change.

For various non-flouncy reasons I've been planning to retire poo anyway, so this feels like the right moment to do that.

Don't let the boring fuckers take over.

Gary.

Honestly never found anyone here particularly righteous or knowledgable.

Sorry you feel this place is misogynistic. Bit of a bugger.

Depressed Beyond Tables

Counterflounce. Nicely played.

Angry and horny now :(

Danger Man

So it wasn't poo saying that stuff. It was the character poo?

S Lee has a lot to answer for.

Just trying to get out of broadcasting VERSUS final, I bet.

See that's why I'm more into amateur.  Not "amateur" style made by professionals but sites where people share and care.  I never really got the appeal of actors fucking - much better to see real people who are sharing things at zero cost because they feel like showing off their bits and bobs, and I find the real world different shapes and sizes more of a turn on tbh.  Maybe I'm weird.  (No maybe about it, I know)

Can't say I've really seen more comments on physical appearance regarding any specific gender, plenty of comments that Boris looks like a clown, etc.  Certainly rather disapponting if we are seeing misogyny here.

Might be best to stay away from political threads as that's where all the strong opinions and dickishness towards each other goes, but I know full well the attraction of political threads and how hard that is... but if it's affecting you enough to want to leave then it could be an option.

Anyway have a good break...

wise. we'll be massively upset if our VERSUS favourites lose, regardless of whether Engerland win cup.

Sorry to read this, Janie. Hope the break isn't too long.

I do think the site has issues with casual misogyny, in particular the way people just drop in 'ironic' refences to sex, whenever a woman is mentioned in any context, and we probably could do more to draw attention to this.

They're called thots now.

CaB isn't an organism though, it's individuals. They could be challenged or censured (hopefully just challenged).

If I compare CaB to day-to-day life it's far, far less strewn with casual misogyny to the extent I'd argue it acts as a respite from it, as it is a respite from all kinds of other bad things.  I'd love to know where people live and hang out that CaB isn't right-on enough.

It is individuals, but it also goes unchallenged by most of us, which is a community issue. It's no different from saying that  an organisation is institutionally racist or sexist, even though a majority of people there aren't openly and consciously bigoted.

I also agree that Cab is less sexist than many other places, but that doesn't mean we can't do and shouldn't aspire to be better.

Edit: broke my rule about getting involved in dramas.

The image of "Poor Little White Boy" from the first page of the porn thread did actually make me feel a bit weird. It's kind of shameful that while I think of myself as an enlightened soul, deep down I had obviously never really considered being in the position of the girl in a film I was watching.

A respite? That rather depends on your sensitivity to it. I don't challenge it which is a personal failing, but then I'd be doing it in every thread and frankly I'm trying not to be forum police, it's dull and boring. This place is misogynistic and I'm not surprised some people don't like it, I know I don't.

The place I work at is fucking abysmal for it. That's what the music and ignoring it is for.

I don't think what I said precludes that ambition.

Depressed Beyond Tables

Things get challenged on here all the time. It's good to see. Just the other day someone thought I was being racist by using the term 'sambo'. Due to my poor education in ethnic slurs I was not familiar with this 'obsolete' term. Rather I used it as a well known Irish word for a sandwich. Honest mistake, sorted.

If you read stuff on here you find in bad taste, yet don't call people on it, and later complain indirectly in tangential threads, then it could be argued that you are contributing a sliver of moral cowardice to the overall CaB organism.

I think that's why I consider the site (generally speaking) more sexist and homophobic than racist and transphobic, actually. The latter tend to be called out, or at least debated in some detail when they occur, whereas the former are much more likely to be ignored.

I certainly wasn't suggesting I was innocent, nor did my post read that way, imo. We could all do better. That was my point. And I'm not pretending it's easy, either. As Endicott says, sometimes you feel like the forum police, especially if there's been a lot of tension around those types of issue lately. But I do think we should make more of an effort to politely, thoughtfully suggest certain types of comment are a bit unnecessary, or may have an impact on other people reading.
