For a female performer, both 'actor' and 'actress' would essentially be correct. But recently many female performers have pushed back on the term 'actress', claiming that this kind of gendered language is latently a bit condescending and reductive. So there's been a big push to use the term 'actor' across the board (isn't there a line that refers to this in 'The Thick of It?). This isn't really a seismic shift, just a small show of consideration, so only people as small minded as Cllr Winter really find the time to get heated up about it.
