People want it to be a parody because trap is a virus swallowing mainstream hip-hop, making mumbling lazy fools very rich by utilising talented producers. There's some trap songs I enjoy, but that's entirely in spite of the "artist" attached to them.

Alternatively, it's a period of time in which producers are starting to take over things, finding they're able to work to their best instincts with more malleable front people . Virtually every big trap(ish) hit begins with a producer's signature sound.

Mind you, I'm a big hip hop fan who basically never pays attention to the lyrical content.

I like trap, vaporwave and most genres that are popular but don't necessitate any particular artistry. It's about what'sａｅｓｔｈｅｔｉｃａｌｌｙ pleasing as opposed to some over-arching cultural element that needs to exist to justify the value of the music. It's immediate.

I agree with whoever said the song doesn't stand up without the video.  It's a fun video for sure, though not quite the revelation I'd been led to expect (isn't that what hype does, though?)  Bizarrely, it does feel like something designed to appeal to a certain class of artsy white people, and that certainly seems to be the demographic it's landed with, but perhaps that was the point?

As for Glover's creative output, I really only have this and the first season of Atlanta to judge.  It was kind of a similar thing, I found the show decent enough (if flawed, some plots drag on a bit and go nowhere) but couldn't reconcile my experience of it with the hype it got.  Must give his stand-up a go.  It's certainly impressive that he's managed to be successful in so many capacities at a fairly young age, with no obvious leg-up that I know of.  I can't think of anyone else who's managed that recently.
