Everything about Madness irks me to fuck but i have so much love for 'The Prince'.

Also, not the entire song, but the violins (I think) at the start of Coldplay's 'Rule The World' are magnificent, despite every other aspect of their output being absolute ballbags.

'All I Want Is You' by U2 might also qualify... maybe 'Love Comes To Town' as well...

What grudging respect do you have for otherwise appalling artists?

Note : please have this topic struck off if it already exists, I'm not one for going back many pages.

DrGreggles

'Another One Bites The Dust'.

Well, the bassline from it anyway.

my theory that the best madness songs aren't the ska ones is correct!

For me, it's Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl. It reminds me of great parties in great pubs with my great family.

I clicked on the thread to post Viva La Vida myself! Not just the strings either but the whole song - bells, riffs, timpani, Eno choir - it all works brilliantly despite Chris bloody Martin being all over the thing. And even he's less annoying than usual.

The televised performance from the Ariana Grande Manchester benefit was the point at which I broke free of my longstanding anti-Coldplay bias and admitted to myself that yes, okay, it's a great song and I love it. Although if pushed I'll still insist that it's all down to Eno. Like a twat would.

Dr Rock

Dr Rock

Oh I also like his song in Rocky Horror Picture Show too.

holyzombiejesus

I quite like that Arcade Fire song, is is called Wake Up? The rest of their stuff is dog shit though.

thraxx

Fucking despise Ocean Colour Scene, but 100 Mile High City is a brilliant single, derivative and cliched yes, but brilliant.

sevendaughters

on another forum we're listening to a Queen album a week and it turns out I don't like them much at all, outside of a few undeniable singles, but March of the Black Queen off Queen II is good Warhammer prog.

Sway from their pre-Britpop incarnation is pretty good as well

I don't hate The Lightning Seeds, but they just don't particularly appeal to me... 'Change' is a decent song though, particularly like the sweeping snyths at the end.

Yeah not a lightning seeds fan at all but I bloody love Sense.

I only know this song and it has a very lovely frankly mr shankly / penny lane chorus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmUwtRYwprU

The Lightning Seeds, Marvellous, is a marvellous song, for me, but I don't really like any of their other stuff.

Shit Good Nose

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - I largely blame them for the bad name that prog got.  BUT their version of Fanfare For the Common Man is a fucking belter.  Not live, though.  The live version was shit.

lebowskibukowski

Foo Fighters - All My Life.

Never listened to the albums, though, so I suppose I could be missing some belters.

Have to say that the biggest gulf I have ever known with one act, between the quality of their best song and their other stuff is with Howard Jones and Hide and Seek, compared to his other stuff.  HAS is hauntingly, awesomely beautiful.  His other chart singles are no more than mildly hummable.  It's as if he had been gifted a level of musical talents that, if concentrated into six minutes, could make two really awesome records, and then used four minutes of that on HAS, and split the rest between all his other chart singles.

Brundle-Fly

I don't hate any of these bands because I'm not 17 years old (or an ex-Melody Maker journo) but I ain't the greatest admirer of any of this lot but do rather like these singles.

I can't understand why this wasn't as big as Shine. Another old TT non-guilty pleasure.

Take That - Hey Boy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOzgW6HeMzg

Their first big flop single because they dared to stray from meat and two veg stool rock

Travis - The Beautiful Occupation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuEgpRPld5I

I pretended to hate this at the time but secretly I thought it was rather lush. Love that sexy intro.

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy

Yes, yes, the whipping boys of Britpop and this was them shamelessly trying to grab some of that laddish Blur/ Black Grape vibe but about three years too late. I like me 'yob pop' so yah boo sucks.

Shed Seven - She Left Me On A Friday
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to6mO1FWlIo

Never liked her much, "Vogue' was good but I do have a soft spot for this piece of fluff purely for the gorgeous 1968-esque string arrangement

You are just having a laugh, yes?  Kajagoogoo were ten years before Britpop.

Are you doing a funny or just reading the comments for the wrong band?

Yes, my post does read like that Kaja were rubbing shoulders with Pulp and Suede in the charts. Doh!

And I meant to link...
