The 11 novels written between the 30s and the 70s that cover changes in British society and Britain's place in the world from the perspective of Lewis Eliot, scholarship boy who rises through the law and civil service to end up seeing all the pinnacles of the establishment at close hand.

There was a TV version in 1984 that trimmed out some of the books in order to emphasise the bits about the nuclear bomb programme. I saw it a few months back and here is my thing:

There have also been radio adaptations which presumably keep it all in, though I haven't heard them. The books got a reprint recently so they aren't being forgotten.

Anyone fancy writing a similar national panorama set in the years 1970-2020?
