EDIT: OK...I can hear Yanny in these pitch shifts, but I can't be arsed to fire up Audacity and check if it's the same clip.

This is the most interesting one for me. I hear Yanny on the top two and Laurel on the bottom three. (Otherwise it's always been Laurel.)

Expert please explain.

BBC Radio Leeds are talking about this right now, and they played the audio!

What did it say?

When the sound has been pitched down, the sound that would usually be recognised as saying 'laurel' is so far below what would be considered the normal frequency range for speech that it goes unnoticed, leaving just the 'yanni' sound. The same works in reverse for the 'yanni' sound. Also shifting the pitch like that messes with the formant to the point where it is unrecognisable as a human vocal sound.

It was Yanni earlier but now it's Laurel.

I think this is less about perception and more about how bassy your listening device is.

Earlier this was both but now it's just Laurel. I guess it's due to my ears previously not having been inundated by sound, which might mean it will be Yanni again tomorrow morning.

all say yanny to me. why does this frustrate me so much. it says yanny kinda high pitched and whiny in an american accent. is that also how it says laurel. i'm getting myself worked up here

On my phone, early this morning, I did hear it as 'yarry' in Eric Cartman's voice.

As I understand it means you're just young and still have good hearing  kittens. Twenty more years of listening to that hip-hop or whatever will sort it out for you.

What did it say?

The shows host heard Laurel, listeners were split 50/50, they got an "expert" on the phone who didn't really know anything, and someone else at the station heard Laurel but then heard Yanni when he listened to it on his phone.

I find that "Laurel" tends to stick with you if you've just managed to start hearing it as Laurel or you've read the word "Laurel". It's a lot easier to go from Yanny to Laurel than it is from Laurel to Yanny.

The true bliss state is when you can hear both of them at the same time.

I meant what did the audio say (you said they played it); Yanny or Laurel?

To clear up what the guy is actually saying, here is the page where the sample originated:

...all you yanny-hearing deaf cunts.

Well I could only hear Yanny no matter what device or volume I listened on until I heard the guy say Laurel on your vocabulary.com link. Now all I can hear is Laurel on the original.

Yeah, I've gone from only being able to hear Yanny, to only being able to hear Laurel, and now back again to Yanny. I'm thoroughly fucked off with my ears; and not just the usual naughty one.

I hear laurel but there's a very brief high pitched whine at the beginning and end (not unlike the scrape of an unresined violin bow across strings) and seeing as someone above has said the 'yanny' is very high pitched and whiny I'm guessing that's the timbre/frequency/whatever they're hearing.

Never forget that that what we see, hear, touch, etc is all a reconstruction/interpretation by our brain of what's actually "out there".

Weird, I could only hear yanny this morning and now I can only hear laurel. Either someone has switched the clips an this is a gas lighting exercise or my ears have changed in 12 hours.

Re: Yanny or Laurel

I can hear both. It feels like 'yanni' is an accidental overtone produced through the compression in the original recording. that's why that word sounds computerised whilst 'laurel' sounds like a man speaking.
