Betting machine stakes cut to £2 blah

Sanitary pad workers at the royal wedding blah blah

US Man Killed by exploding vape pen blah blah blah

Whenever I see headlines like this on BBC News I feel like something important is being squashed.  What have I missed today?  I feel like there was a buried news thread at one point but haven't looked.

Neville Chamberlain

So much for hidden news, but what about news we know nothing about?!?!?

The betting machine one is quite a big story though, considering how much impact they have on everyones lives, even if its just how much highstreets and town centres have changed because of these things.

Cut implies lowered but I'm sure they were a quid when I worked for ladbrokes up until 2009.

Care to make a bet on it?

biggytitbo

They're £100 now arent they?

Sebastian Cobb

That's maximum stake, on certain things like blackjack and roulette. 2 quid seems very low for that. Plus in roulette I guess every area you choose is an independent bet.

For reels I don't think it was ever higher than about 2 quid.

biggytitbo

Says you can bet up to £100 every 20 seconds on casino games.

FOBTs aren't fruit machines.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed_odds_betting_terminal

They're restricted to four terminals per betting shop, which is partly (almost wholly, in fact) to blame for the proliferation of betting shops on the high street.

They are kryptonite for problem gamblers.

I know, I worked in a bookies when they started to be popular and they started moving shops around (sometimes opposite to each other) in high traffic areas.

Some of the most popular games, and the worst at hoovering up money were the reel games, usually a quid a spin but you could set it to autospin until you ran out of money or hit a feature.

Ever sat in a far too warm bookies listening to four machines loop the instrumental from Walk Like an Egyptian out of time with each other with a hangover that already made you want to die? I have.

Someone's fucking with the Ozone layer again.

According to the Guardian there's been a sharp rise in new CFCs from somewhere in East Asia.

QuoteThe government said the stake limit would come into effect some time next year, but would not set an exact timetable.
Translation - 'The Treasury rakes in 25% of all the profits from these little beauties but we've heard some horror stories and think this might be the next big scandal. So to nip it in the bud we're pretending to take a tough stance while booting the fucker into the long grass and carrying on as normal.'
