Left-field hip hop

I'm a long-time fan of hip hop that is either abstract in production style or has lyrics that are uncharacteristically humorous or absurd. Naturally, I think Dr. Octagonecologyst is the greatest hip hop album of all time, with the Deltron 3030 debut not far behind. I wanna use this thread as a means to share lesser known stuff that really deserves more recognition, or new releases that are worth hearing.

Ski Mask The Slump God - Beware the Book of Eli
This just came out, and I was doing housework earlier and kept creasing up at how great the beats were, and more importantly, how fucking hilarious his lyrics are. The record is about 20 minutes long but it's entertaining all the way through. A refreshingly fun and quick-fire take on trap, which is a genre I largely do not care for.

Coolest Monkey in the Jungle has Timbaland on the beat and the title is an obvious joke about that whole furore with H&M not so long ago.

QuoteIn my life I fucked a couple witches, think I'm a wizard
Hot as desert critters, or cookin' gizzard
Lick her like a lizard, that how I litter
'Cause she got them itty bitty titties, just like the comittee
That bitch kitty be kiddin' me, tryna belittle me
Know that she feelin' me, giggity-giggity!
It be no biggity, diamonds move fidgetty
Smoke me a ciggity, fuck all your bitches, b

MIKE - MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE
The production on this album, done entirely by close friends in his local collective, is extremely sparse and strange, with 18-year old MIKE giving very frank, earnest stories about his life, making for a stark listening experience that often feels like some woozy fever dream. Bizarre, beat-less tunes that sample old soul tracks into mesmerising vaporwave-style flows. MIKE either takes a back seat and lets the music wash over your brain, or raps extremely blunt and matter-of-fact. Pigeonfeet is such a great song, the sampling in the second half is amazing from kids so young and underground.

Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire
Probably one of the most underrated rappers I can think of. He's been delivering such interesting music for years, either codeine-laced weirdo slow jams that sample Frank Zappa interviews (Orbz a.k.a Some Wise Quote Drake Never Said) or big balls-out tunes that wouldn't sound out of place on a Wu-Tang hits collection (Bebop and Rocksteady feat. Meyhem Lauren). Criminally slept-on, but I'm so glad I ever heard of him. Dude fuckin' rules. This quote at the end of Bebop and Rocksteady cracks me up:

QuoteAnd your shawty think I'm super cool, she wasn't shit I sent that bitch home in an uber pool
She made seventeen and a half stops, she lives 3.6 miles away and it took her 14 hours. Fuck that bitch!

I'll post more later but I got a date this afternoon so I need to make myself beautiful. Bye.

I don't think people should talk about women like that.

That MIKE stuff is ace. Thanks for that. Not so keen on the others/

Does Lil' B count? I think he's genuinely bizarre, and has made some fucking amazing tracks and some of the worst crap I've ever heard.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein

There's a pocket of well done nuts skulking roundabouts that think my bio is accessorised whimsy when it's actually quoting one of the hardest underground rap tracks that got me into the scene.

Also check out The Four Owls, Cunninlynguists, Milo, Quasimoto, Open Mike Eagle, The Darkhorsemen, Busdriver.

I mean you didn't get that nice Afrika Bambaataa chappie going on like that.

I tried an attempt at this thread a month ago, it died a sorry death.

But I have been heavily listening to Early Adopted and Sadistik to get me through the morning commute, both are lyrically incredible.

Early Adopted ft. Sadistik-"Teeth to Dust: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9ZxJjlMhN8

There is a ridiculous amount of good hip hop out there, but it gets no coverage.

Froggy Fresh obviously.

I preferred his Krispy Kreme era

Also, I only delved into Busdriver's joints when I heard Pretentious Friends https://youtu.be/rUkdjmTrfAQ

The rest of his stuff is more bawdy slow tuned spoken word. Striking lyricism but no punch.

Most of this stuff really isn't my bag, I'm afraid. I really can't stand conscious hip hop, MCs that rap super fast or sound like they're reciting a bloody TED talk are just extremely tedious to me. People like Busdriver and Aesop Rock do my fucking head in. I hold similar contempt for bands like clipping. and Ho99o9. Rubbish, sorry!

The closest thing to conscious/outwardly-smart hip hop I like is Antipop Consortium. Arrhythmia is one of my favourite hip hop albums, they have a really cool sound and I greatly enjoy not having a fucking clue what they're on about.

Bubblz

Human Shield

As far as fully uncompromising, mental underground hip hop is concerned, I've never heard anything quite as confrontational as B L A C K I E. At times simply like an extremely abrasive Death Grips (WARCHILD), or utilising really weird lo-fi production styles with no low end sound at all (I Write On Money), full-blown 16-minute avant-garde nightmares (IMAGINE YOUR SELF IN A FREE AND NATURAL WORLD) or recording a whole album with no drums where he plays all the acoustic instruments himself, which is arguably his best and most interesting work: GEN. Real fucking punk rock shit.

Chairman Bodog

Johnny, I know what I like and I'll beat that drum. Don't be acting like I said it was an assault on the senses.

BeardFaceMan

I like Canibus rapping about planets and shit.

I can't work out what your criticism of Busdriver is here. Is it that he is too fast?

Chairman Bodog

Hope a cat's not pedalling past Aesop. He spat with Vast Aire too so I take that as a crosstream piss on Cannibal Ox.

Bazooka

Aesop Rock's voice is horrible, however I happened to have been born with an ear out of pure luck that can tolerate it. He is without question one if the finest, if not the finest poet in recorded human history.
