Are you sure you're not on about white text there? Most people use white text. I'm using Chrome on Mac and when I highlight highlighted text I see fuck all.
Just checked on my phone (Chrome iOS) and I'm getting the same
Got the same on Firefox here

Transparent: Luke was his Darth Vader's son
White text: Michael was Vito Corleone's son

I can't see anything using Firefox on a Mac.

RE: crowds laughing
the naked people is ridiculously silly and whatever it was aiming for failed in a huge way, Gabriel Byrne lighting up like a bunsen burner is comedically abrupt, especially when he was seemingly being as deliberately wooden as possible up to that point, Toni Collette flying around the walls was completely off tone from what happened already, actually everything with Toni Collette near the end, and the head snapping off didn't make anyone at my screening laugh but I wouldn't blame anyone for a few awkward laughs ...it was surely playing for laughs a few of these times?.

Yes, there were people laughing at those points at the screening I went to too. Toni Collette floating up the stairs was hilarious, but also a bit annoying because it was at this point that I became certain that the supernatural was involved.

I had been hoping that with most of the family on some sort of drugs, it might have been mass hysteria, or something. I was half expecting yer man with his crown and baffled expression, having surveyed the room full of naked supplicants, to exclaim 'You lot are FUCKING MENTAL!'

Heh, that would have been a much better ending, and made up for the rubbish final 15 minutes.

Just checked chrome on Android and got the same as you!

This is very interesting. Seems to be OS level as opposed browser level?

You're right, it doesn't work in Safari on iOS; I'll take your word for Chrome and Firefox - they must all be using the same text selection APIs.

The Charlie's head bit was silly. I didn't laugh at loud, but that was the moment the film literally lost the plot. Such a clunky and misjudged moment.

DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE SEEN THE FILM, THESE ARE SPOILY SPOILERS

This was a pretty uninspiring film, and the hypetrain was way off. I saw in on the big screen in Picturehouse in Leicester square, and the sound system was so good, with all those low buzzing frequencies rumbling around you, that you cant help but enjoy the visceral experience to an extent. But the story was trash, Byrne was lost, Collette's character was laughable and melodramatic, though she probably did the best she could with it. I hope the whole satanic pact thing is a metaphor for the way that traits of parents and grandparents come back to haunt you, and you find yourself behaving like them, because that is the saving grace of the film, irrespective of the fact it could have done more with all of that. This film has not stayed with me, except for shots of the son's dread at his mom and the soundtrack buzzing away.

Addendum: It Follows is one of the best horror films of the 21c, so that's where I'm coming from.

I took the ending as there's no demon, it was all in their heads. Hence the title 'Hereditary'.

There are other possible interpretations of the title, like the one I mentioned, so there's no simple 'hence' about it. I also don't  get how your idea fits the title. Like, they share some family delusion, which leads to collective hallucinations?

The letters of the word "head" can all be found in "Hereditary". It's pretty clear. Hence.

St_Eddie

The letters of the word 'retard' can also be found in 'hereditary'.

Also, 'Yeti'.

Was there a retarded yeti in Hereditary?  Perhaps I wasn't paying close enough attention.

Howj Begg

Yuh.
Knowing the actual quality of this film's script and conception, I think the dullest, crappest explanation for the title is the true one: the grandmother is able to possess the daughter and mum literally, so the title is just a lame play on words more than anything else. The villain is the oldest family member; that's it.

Johnny Yesno

It's an anagram of 'her dietary' and the girl was allergic to nuts, hence.

Hence, I'm clutching at straws here.

Small Man Big Horse

Also: Her Tray Die, tray being slang for three, which is the number of people who die in the movie.

Johnny Yesno

Three Diary.

'Three die, 'Arry.' Makes you think.

SPOILERS - I don't know how to make my writing invisible and can't read yours when you do:

Was really disappointed by this after so much hype. Didn't buy the characters BEFORE shit kicked off, which doomed them in my view for afterwards. The script bending at so many moments to FORCE an idea the writer had obviously already had:

In what world would that mother force that brother to take that sister to that party?

In what world would she do so with no word of warning to sister or brother about sister's deadly allergy?

In what world would the brother allow this to happen?

Oh, and he panics and drives bad because weed. So weak, and the ending went right off a cliff - particularly the final scene reaching for some kind of existential fear.

The mother was so unintentionally funny and her son could easily have played her husband/looked fuck all like his sister.

One positive was I was surprise to see how good Byrne's looking. He should make a break for some good projects, he's still got some good years left.

In a world where she's incredibly stressed and needs some time to herself.

In a world where they've all grown up with this so surely he'd know anyway.

In a world where he's a horny teen who ignores his sister to try to get with a girl.

He's not driving badly because he's smoked pot, he's driving badly because his sister's dying and he's under a lot of pressure.

Correct. This is "Everything Wrong With..." holepunching bullshit.

As would she. Why on earth would she eat the cake without knowing what was in it?

I guess they can excuse just about everything with her as being down to her being some lobotomised demon.

The issue really isn't the plot holes as much as its the half assed use of lazy plot devices to speed things along in a film that had more than enough time to get through its plot competently.

Well the peanuts weren't in the cake, I thought. It was just that the knife they used to cut the peanuts was the same one used to cut the cake.

I didn't buy that she'd make a 12 year old girl go to a party with her 17 year old brother, or that would she go all night without checking up on her until finding her corpse in the morning.

Dog, put all of that in front of me and I'd tell my mum to stick it - that my sister doesn't want to go to this party, that she's not welcome there, and that sending her is the act of cruelty it so obviously is.

The horny-teenness is exactly my point. It's probably not helped by the lad looking 31, but him meekly accepting this maternal cockblock struck me as very unrealistic. Would have been hack, but still better if the girl had hidden in the car - either to escape the house, or to be close to her brother, etc, and once there he's stuck with her.

Also, cool it, popcorn, it's not hole punching bullshit, it's what struck me as very unnatural about a film that I thought was poorly written. I'm genuinely glad you feel differently - there are plenty of things I love that other people hate.

grassbath

Not a fan of this. Either halfway through production the director panicked and changed what it was about, or it was butchered in editing. The obligatory PAROXYSM OF TERROR usually saved for the climax made up the latter 75% of the film - some effective bits but largely it just pinballed from cliche to cliche in the hope something would stick. The through-line from 'menacing dead grandma' to 'paranormal cult neighbours' should have been really easy to plot but instead was incredibly confusing and messy. Better than overhyped modern horror A Quiet Place, worse (by some distance) than overhyped modern horror The Witch.

Noodle Lizard

Her insisting the daughter go along to the teenage house party instantly stuck out as weird to me too, it's hardly CinemaSins stuff.  Even ignoring the absurdity of sending your seemingly autistic child off to a party with a bunch of 16-18 year olds, she goes on an exchange where she clearly doesn't believe her son that he won't be drinking/doing drugs, and then immediately says "Alright, well take her along with you, in the car you'll be driving".  It was just convoluted and unnecessary, as was the end result of it, really.  The nut allergy stuff was signposted to almost South Park parody levels, and again, unnecessary.  As with a lot of other things in this movie, it feels like he settled on the first idea that popped into his head and then scrambled to make the rest of the story work around it.

C_Larence

I thought the twist was going to be that the whole family suffered from the nut allergy (hence "Hereditary") and, having never had an allergic reaction, assumed one of the symptoms could be hallucination. There was a story on Newsround years ago about a girl whose classmates weren't allowed to wash their hair with shampoos that contained nuts, because even being around them would cause her to have a reaction and potentially die, so I thought it might be something like that causing the whole family to have a shared hallucination. When Toni Colette went into the loft and found a candle I genuinely thought it was going to be a nut candle (?) and the source of all their problems.

Sebastian Cobb

Once the hype has died down and this film stands the test of time it'll probably be seen as on a par with something like I dunno, Raising Cain.

popcorn

Anne has Peter take Charlie to the party because she's a bad parent, she's not in her right mind, and most importantly because - whether she consciously knows it or not - she's punishing him. He goes along with it because she's trapped him in a lie.

Charlie getting to the party through other means would alleviate Anne of all blame for her death.

Isn't the age gap between the two of them meant to be like 2 years?

Does anyone comment once on her being all weird? I mean, the idea seems pretty obvious that she's weird because of the gran getting her claws in the child from the get go, but it doesn't make a point of clarifying that the parents know that.

I think he's 16 and she's 13 which in teenage years is a massive developmental gap.

Well I finally got to see this and I have to say it is pretty ordinary. There are some nice shots and good sound work but the plot is a yawn fest and the ending just terrible. The trailer makes it look like a completely different film, I don't get why the critics have been wanking themselves silly over it.

popcorn

Well, fuck all you boring bastards, I thought this was rather tasty.

On paper, yes, it ticks several familiar boxes, but the execution (ho ho) was fresh. Charlie, for example, could so easily have been just another spooky child who makes creepy art - but instead struck me as an authentically strange, lonely, sad girl. I loved the lighting and art direction - it had an unusual amount of sunshine and colour for a horror film.

I always wanted to know what would happen next, I was engrossed in the mood and the world, it's a cool film for handsome people.
