After Tom Wolfe last week, American letters (and words, and sentences) suffers another loss.

Brilliant writer. American Pastoral, The Plot Against America and Portnoy's Complaint are all favourites of mine. I always thought he was a Nobel Prize candidate, especially as he has the foresight to quit while he was ahead, so he didn't suffer the late career tail-spin of a lot of great writers.

Been a bit of a bad month for great American authors. I hope Tom Pynchon's feeling okay.

I've only read his stuff from the mid-90s on, and American Pastoral is an absolute masterpiece.  The long scene where Swede reunites with his daughter is one of the most intense passages of writing I know.

Hated Portnoy's Complaint. Dreadful.

A superb review of a new biography of Roth.  It doesn't make me want to buy the book, or even inspire me to return to Roth's novels (though I will re-read American Pastoral one day), but it does make me feel I need to read more by Christian Lorentzen.  It's a magnificent piece of writing.
