Too Old to Die Young - new NWR series
« on: May 28, 2018, 12:02:44 PM »
I don't know if anyone is interested but Nicolas Winding Refn has co-wrote and directed all the episodes of this new series for Amazon. It follows "a grieving police officer who, along with the man who shot his partner, finds himself in an underworld filled with working-class hit men, Yakuza soldiers, cartel assassins sent from Mexico, Russian mafia captains and gangs of teen killers."
I didn't like The Neon Demon nor Only God Forgives but this one might be interesting.

Has anyone watched it? Is it any cop? (see what I unintentionally did there?)

I like Rehn's thing and am tempted to give this a go, but can easily imagine all that ennui and hollowness and seriousness feeling, well, hollow after two or three feature-length episodes. How long do we really need to spend learning that life is aimless, violent, unrewarding and, for some reason, soundtracked by vaguely underwhelming retro synth-pop?

I'm afraid you're right Inspector Norse. I will try though (when I find the courage to), and report back.

Bump.

One episode down and unsure what to think.

Its slow very slow and Miles Teller the lead speaks a word a minute. Plot wise unsure it needed 90 minutes as well not a lot happens but it does look gorgeous. Will watch more episodes later, but tbh would not blame anyone for giving up after episode 1.

Finished.

Not sure what to make of it really. Its aimed at NWR fans to say the least.

Its stunning to look at and has some memorable scenes, but its also flawed as I feared.

Its absurdly slow and its nowhere as shocking as it probably thinks it is. The sniping at fascism while obviously a deserved target is really cringe and what you would expect from a 17 year old woke kid online.

The Teller part of the story is the strongest, Baldwin as a crazy dad is great along with Sol from Deadwood who pops up as a murderer of the worst people.

The Mexican element of the story is flat and at times tries to hard to shock and sadly towards the end that is where the focus goes.

Its cool that in the era of forgettable binge shite that NWR gets the freedom to do what he wants, but it could have been better.

6/10 for me.

When it comes to music its all very meh sadly bar Mandy from Barry Manilow which is a genuine "ha NWR still has it " moment. That episode which obviously features Teller probably the best of the series.

I dunno if its supposed to be funny? Miles Teller's snail pace to the police car in the first episode had me in stitches. Very indulgent.

Did you persist with it after the first episode? I'd understand totally if someone said "fuck this life is to short" etc.

I will probably re watch it in 12 months, but for now its his third miss (small but a miss is a miss) in a row since Drive.

that's what I did. I honestly don't know what he was trying to achieve here.

I managed to binge up to episode 5 or 6? Finished the arc with the porn dudes. There's no way I would of sat through it if I didnt need something i could half watch while nursing a hangover all day. Had its moments, just they sat in-between people saying or doing nothing for long periods of time. I don't think I'll finish it - but I didnt completely hate it - there's probably a good 2 hour movie in here.

Finished this at the weekend. No idea what to make of it to be honest. Some brilliant moments, lots of dragged out shite, but it's the first series in ages I've watched all the way through so that's something.

Some cracking music as well - I've had this bassline in my head all weekend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV2A8icT7PI
