You only picked 8 teams, honey. HZJ gonna be pissed at you.

Pissflaps.

Oh well, out with Germany and in with Sweden, Japan and Saudi Arabia then. Oh, the humanity.

There are some lovely odds to be had. A Saudi Arabia win is the first step on my 40 million quid accumulator odyssey

Kane to be top goalscorer is 20/1. Add a couple of zeroes to that and it might be realistic.

I think anything England-related is going to be aimed at the idiot-market, though.

Apologies. It's any of Spain, France, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Spain or Equatorial Guinea.

Hoi, Ell, Kane's taking a pen to put us in the final.

Ell: whatevs, Bramley Apple is 10/1 in The Cathedral Cheese Stakes.

Imagine how upset Ray Winstone would be if he heard you talk like that. You want that on your conscience, buddy?

Anyway I'm not actually putting any money on these bets, as they are risky as fuck. They're just as good a gauge of what the population reckons is going to happen as we have and something to talk about. You know, the sort of thing that's the lifeblood of a discussion board.

I'm hoping against all hope that France sparkle without doing their usual gloss-removal. At times they played how I had dreamed they would, e.g. against Iceland in the Euros, Switzerland in the last World Cup, both 5-2 victories - but even in those games they let the opposition 'back in' with 2 late goals and if the score had been say 3-0, you'd have imagined the comeback. Even in their WC winning year they stumbled through a few games such as Paraguay and Croatia, only showing world class in the tremendous final (but again, the mystery around Ronaldo's absence may have damaged Brazil's ability to play their usual game).

By any means necessary? No, I'd prefer them to lose in the SF but in an attacking manner where in years to come the BBC actually feature a positive highlight from their campaign rather than the Zidane headbutt or Senegal shock victory (the only two items to feature France in the Beebs rundown of 50 World Cup Memories package).

A 6-3 SF defeat against Argentina would be better than a 1-0 fluke in the final.

Bookmarked.

One of only two games I saw at the old Wembley was England v Saudi Arabia.

The result? A sizzling 0:0.

I reckon these lads can do a job. Provided they have the same players as in 1998.

I wouldn't bet on Kane to be top scorer for England. Welbeck could manage that on about 2 goals given Kane's form

He can fuck off and take his fat floating cockney head with him.

No offence Mr Winstone, sir, if you're reading this.

Five Live have a good, 3 hour long preview on here. Alan Shearer sounded genuinely aggrieved when Chappers asked him some basic questions on the Saudis.

Relatively interesting discussion about Gorky, ruined only by the comparisons made to Barnsley.

Ah Chris Sutton is reeling off facts about St Petersburg, it's what world cups are about! Dion Dublin on Saransk, and Jermaine Jenas on Volgograd are coming up in the next hour, after the latest BBC News.

The Russians might do alright, I reckon. Their squad and recent form is crap but they could probably still beat the Saudis and Egypt. They can get out the group but nothing further than that.

Well they need to produce a better showing on the world stage after the last time when Slutsky was buried in the woods great shame.

Really struggled with whether to swap Spain for France or use the money (plus 10k spare) to go with Portugal and Uruguay. Up until writing this, I thought I'd go for the latter until I realised there's a good possibility of them meeting each other in the last 16. So...

Egypt (10)
Iran (5)
France (20)
Australia (5)
Iceland (5)
Brazil (20)

If anyone wants to offer a prize for the winner, it might be nice. It would depend on a) the winner being prepared to give their home address out and b) others agreeing to post their prize to that address. Or is it too much of a faff? I have a Jade Goody memorial candle up for grabs....
