That's not the shape I would choose to slide up my gary, but I suppose Google's industrial design isn't as good as some.

Just a little Bluetooth Low Energy beacon. It says "Hi, I'm here, this is my identifier". That's it. It will last for ages on one set of batteries.

I used something similar (off-the-shelf parts, not commercial) for my home automation. When my phone detected the beacon (i.e. I have gone near to my house) it switched the lights on. Bit shit, use a motion sensor instead.
