You're "about to go out on a Friday night" music

Maybe you don't go out on a Friday night anymore but if or when you did, what do/did you stick on the gramophone before you slope(d) out the door for a messy evening at the Pigeon Toed Orange Peel?

This tittyshaker was often the appetiser for my looming Friday night debauchery in the mid-nineties.

For a long time it was Beverly Kills by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti...

...but I don't go out so often anymore and if I did I would have to play something else as I totally ran that track into the ground over about 4 or 5 years.

Edit: I just remembered my few recent weekend outings have been preceded by Don't Talk by Ya Ya.

the

Krafty Kuts Instant Party mix (Mixmag, December 2001). Deftly selected and mixed, but chronologically it also marks a perfect transfer moment between Breaks' production gloss and bounce and Big Beat's fun and eclecticism.

Sometimes other similarly wicked mixes (Freestylers Essential Mix, a Remerge Records rave mashup that went out on Xfm... and more).

Side one of "Exile On Main Street"

Yeah. I don't even like them particularly but the Stones serve this one excellent purpose for cunts like me having a getting-ready tinny, applying aftershave and hoping to get their end away.

I like that. Touch of Gorillaz about it if that doesn't offend?

I'm a long-time Gorillaz / Blur / Damon fan so not at all :) I'm hoping their upcoming album is more in line with that kind of sound than the disappointing 'Humanz' which I found very low on memorable melodies.

Oh Brundle, if you've never heard the parent album About Today by Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti you are in for a massive treat.

Before Today, Crabby, but it's not the most memorable name! :) Nice to hear you're a fan!

Oh for fucks sake. Saw The National play 'About Today' a couple of weeks back and the title's obviously still lodged in my head. Been drinking all afternoon is another excuse.

Hey we're all friends (afternoon drinkers) here. I still had to look up the name of the album despite being a bit of an Ariel Pink obsessive :)

I know Ariel Pink and bought Worn Copy at the time but somehow this loveliness passed me by.

We'll be discussing early '00's Bobby Conn albums next!

Don't get me started, I could tell many tales about Bobby Conn :) The main one is that he got me up onstage and sang 'Whores' to/about me.

Edit: This was a gig that consisted solely of him and a ghetto blaster and an audience of about 20, so the reality isn't as exciting as it sounds.

Back in the day it was nearly always Paul Oakenfold's original Goa Mix, from R1's weekly Essential Mix series broadcast early Sunday morning. Perfect to get you in the mood for the first drop of the night!

Porter Dimi

Basically anything by Fela Kuti, but I'll go with Gentleman just for the sake of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snIV_-IECsM

Bit of trivia. Mike came up with the Nutty Train as the cover image and jokingly claimed the order of the band members was in order of importance to wind up Lee (but actually it is in height order) Note Suggs is now in front on supposedly their last single and album cover with Chas promoted to second in command after not appearing on the original sleeve. They are facing the opposite direction to suggest the band are returning from whence they came with their shadowy past behind them but still one step beyond into the great unknown.

Carry on.

Can't beat a bit of Conn. BitConn.

the main thing i'm taking from this thread is I've not listened to too much pressure in a while.

I didn't! Very nice. The 2nd one is giving me real Joni Mitchell vibes.

There's only one album out there from 2016. It's rather fine and has super artwork.
