I like watching this thing on Channel 5 about debt collectors. Does it count as poverty porn and should we be ashamed for watching it?

Is it Can't Pay, We'll Take it Away? Yeah, it's a load of shite. And sadly quite popular.

I went through a week of watching it at lunchtimes. Bit addictive. The Scheme is right up there at the top though.

The most disgusting thing about this programme for me is the cheery exclamation mark at the end of the title.

I have watched far too much of this for which I know there is no excuse.

In early series they use to have an eviction case every other week or so when the bailiffs would help the evicted family a little in almost scripted scenes.

Now they don't bother and it's mostly extracting money from dodgy car dealerships or failed company directors. When they do evict bankrupt families they just shrug their shoulders and say sorry.

If it's on the BBC you're fine if it's on channel 5 you're scum

Alberon

The BBC version isn't that different. The only changes are that they don't wear bodycams so half the time all you get is a shot of a closed shop and audio only. And they often interview the person the debt is owed to at excessive length.

It's okay for you. I have a relative whose partner was on the show. As a creditor not a debtor. And they are now apparently big mates with one of the bailiff types.

Being someone on Universal Credit and who has been fucked around by it enough to actually go on TV to combat it, I can't stand programs like this and my tuppence worth is yes, it's poverty porn, and morally disgusting.

Soz, like, but you did ask. If you want poverty, try it for yourself, or watch more serious shows on it, which means news or Horizon basically.

The joy this society gets from my position means I will never, ever come back, I'll never return to who I was, and I'll always have an element of distaste. A portion of me is now dead - I feel it every day. To know that's entertainment and trivia to some unmans me. I don't like being alive sometimes, and I don't like waking up every fucking day knowing I'm fucked - for the rest of my life, I'm fucked, even if I escape, I'm fucked, I'm drowning, that you can never get back what's gone already, you can never undo, and I'll always have this fucking stink on me, this reek of suffering, and the best I can possibly hope for is saving myself while never forgetting, and continuing to convert it into motivation for helping others - as anything lighter that would be betrayal of the highest order; betrayal of the self.

Well, you did ask...!

Here, watch these people get all their possessions taken off them because they made some poor financial descisions. SPONSORED BY BRIGHTHOUSE.

In my eyes anyone involved in the making of these shows is no better than someone like Tom Norman.

In a similar case to this, utterly insufferable YouTube "star" Alfie Deyes recently did a video where he "lived on £1 for a day" - disregarding the fact he's playing poverty for his own profit, he prefaced his "challenge" by saying that petrol, etc didn't count. Also he could use his private gym and get free Krispy Kreme donuts off a fan and that didn't count either. I could only watch a few minutes of his video but he complained about drinking tap water instead of his "filtered water machine".

Obviously the backlash was strong and he took down the video and then put up an apology, including the line "I'm being called a Tory on Twitter, I'm not a Tory" in the most Tory voice possible. Sorry mate, you're fooling no one.

Shameful programmes and you should not watch them. Anyway the other day I was watching Nightmare Tenants Slum Landlords on Channel 5. The part I saw was all 'nightmare tenants'. There was a bloke crying tears of joy because he'd got a court order to have an unemployed man kicked out of his home. Extremely edifying television.

I can understand watching it for a few minutes out of interest but not day after day after day. How can you wallow in other people's misery and suffering by watching it multiple times? I'm not trying to be judgemental but I dunno. I suppose these types of reality TV and docusoap just aren't for me but even if they were I'd draw the line at stuff where you're leering at vulnerable and down on their luck people. This type of show is right at the point of climax, where all these unlucky people's bad decisions come back to get them.

I suppose a bit of repossession isn't so bad but evictions are very sad, depressing and miserable and I can't see the appeal of witnessing the process other than if you are some banker or billionaire and you want to show them the result of their actions.

This is very moving... Life's 'wheel of fortune' can take any of us up or down. Down crushes you and brands you. Universal Credit is designed specifically to grind individuals into the shit. Poverty porn documentaries like this disgust me, tbh.

On that landlords show, the landlords always go round to watch tenants getting turfed out, inevitably leading to confrontation. Why do that? Almost as if the producers of these shows are engineering confrontational situations.

Reading back my other post in this thread I've just realised I didn't phrase it properly, because I was trying (and failing) to make a black-comedy-ish joke. So for clarity: One of the most disgusting things about the programme mentioned is its cheery exclamation mark in the title. Everything else about it is also beyond horrible. Right now my dad is watching a repeat or something of the Channel 5 one. The fact he does this is a genuine cause of shame for me.

I got stuck in the middle of a real life row about that not long ago. A schoolmate of mine rents out a few flats while another works with homeless people. And when they got together it was moider.

The landlord one is a decent chap but when he mentioned problems with one of his tenants and his plans to evict her, the other one (also a decent chap) leapt to the tenant's defence, even though he didn't know her.  Meanwhile I and the other schoolmate who was in the pub that night just sat there in silence attempting not to catch anybody's eye while the argument raged.

JarrowMonkey

The two older guys on the show who have some semblance of humanity about them, although one of them is definitely wearing a syrup

The others are all cunts, especially that big fat cunt with the massive gap in his front teeth, acting all hard against people at the lowest point it could possibly be in their lives, he couldn't fight fucking sleep and I'd love to see him getting a proper fucking kicking

In those days before countless 'amateur' mags, that was bottom of the pecking order, I reckon.

My stepdad use to get one called 'Lovebirds' or something like that, it was more like a beginners guide to gynaecology than a scud mag to be honest

Daytime on the BBC basically turns into Daily Mail TV, endless programs showing us that the working classes are nothing but criminals with some property devolpment and aniques buying in-between.

The thing that pisses me off about this one (although it sadly does reflect real life) is that the "nightmare tenants" - who almost all seem to have underlying mental health issues - get thrown out on to the street and told to go and tell the council they are homeless, who will inevitably tell them to fuck off and go and find a cardboard box to live in, while the "slum landlords", who have been housing twenty people in a makeshift shack attached to the back of their kebab shop with no running water, electricity or fire exit are just advised that they better have sorted it out when they're next visited in 18-24 months, or they will get another stern telling off. Then sometimes they do return and of course nothing has changed, except that there might be forty people living in there now instead. It just highlights how landlords can get away with absolutely bloody anything in this country.

Utter Shit

I hate the term poverty porn. Have you seen the people on these shoes? I've found it almost impossible to knock one out.

Really good one on now. Stupid woman attacking them and claiming they have assaulted her.  Unexpected turns promised after the break. Can't wait.
