That Police announcement at 4:30pm was a total waste of time.  They didn't tell us anything we didn't already know.

Isnt Anything

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-44707052

yeah they REALLY look like crack / heroin addicts, although i know one shouldnt generalise

and if that really WAS the initial suspicion then why was the response like this -

QuoteNeighbours tell me the peace at this usually quiet new estate in Amesbury was broken at about 18:30 BST on Saturday evening.

It was hot and many were out having barbecues when they heard sirens and saw flashing lights as first ambulances, then the fire brigade and police arrived in Muggleton Road.

They saw seven fire engines and fire officers wearing hazmat suits at the scene. The house was cordoned off and the word here was that this was a suspected drugs overdose.

Wiltshire and Dorset Fire Rescue Service said seven vehicles and two specialist ones had attended Muggleton Road on Saturday evening.

Crews in hazmat suits, which are worn to deal with dangerous or hazardous substances, were sent to the scene in what the fire service described as a "standard procedure response".

Chloe Edwards, a 17-year-old college student who lives near the cordoned-off flat, said she was having dinner when "all these emergency vehicles turned up" and was told to stay inside.

"I am not sure how long they were in there but we couldn't get out of the house for two-and-a-half hours."

unless they thought it was a potential drugs factory ?

Then on one hand we have

QuoteThe government's emergency committee, Cobra, has met in the Cabinet Office at an official level to discuss the events in Amesbury, which is being "treated with the utmost seriousness".

The Met said counter terrorism officers are now working with Wiltshire Police "given the recent events in Salisbury".

and on the other hand we have

QuoteWiltshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson said the police had worked hard at "containing any risk that might be there".

"There's no reason to think it's connected with matters of last month," he said.

"I haven't seen anything in this incident yet that I would consider to be an overreaction in terms of previous incidents, it all seems fairly textbook."

and why this sudden mention apparently out of the blue of Queen Elizabeth Gardens in Salisbury ?

QuoteInvestigators are trying to work out if the Novichok could have been prepared in Queen Elizabeth Gardens in Salisbury, and the Amesbury pair came into contact with its residue.

Did i miss a meeting there ?

(also that again makes a mockery of what the Wiltshire Police chief said)

they seem to be doing an even worse job of getting their story straight than last time

Isnt Anything

Ok well the Guardian version
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jul/04/wiltshire-unknown-substance-leaves-pair-critically-ill-in-salisbury-hospital
is vastly more helpful, including as it does this

QuoteThe pair were in Queen Elizabeth Park, in Salisbury, the night before they fell ill, leading to speculation that they could have come into contact with residue of the novichok used in the Skripal attack.

Police sources dismissed as speculation one theory that the Skripal nerve agent could have been prepared in the park ahead of the attack.

amongst many other useful details

so utterly shit non-sequitur reporting by the BBC

although the Graun says that nerve agent was only suspected late last night when the hospital couldnt fix the couple, which still invites the question, is it normal to send seven fire engines and hazmat suits out to a suspected drug overdose ??!!

Zetetic

By that point, it was already thought to be something else, wasn't it?

I'd guess it's difficult for Emergency Services in Salisbury not to be a bit paranoid at the best of times (given the dstl stuff, the Army stuff and so on) and - rationally or otherwise - perhaps particularly oversensitive in the aftermath of the Skripal case.

Well it certainly seems that way but thats not what either report is saying at face value. Guardian -

QuoteAt a press conference in Amesbury, near Stonehenge, deputy chief constable Paul Mills said that when the couple fell ill on Saturday it was initially believed they had been using drugs, possibly from a contaminated batch.

But a major incident involving 12 agencies was announced in the early hours on Wednesday when health officials and police became alarmed at the couple's symptoms and were unable to pinpoint the cause.

Mrs Anything reckons it was on the charity shop blanket ( mentioned in the Guardian report ).

Point taken about local emergency services paranoia though.

Here Comes Mongo

From the Independent:
QuoteThe couple who are fighting for their lives after falling ill in a major incident in Wiltshire have been named as Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess by a friend.

Those don't sound very Russian names.

mothman

Neither do Philip & Elizabeth Jennings, or Anna Chapman, eh? Eh? EH?

BlodwynPig

BOOM! Novichok два

ALERT ALERT STAY INDOORS DO NOT WATCH FOOTBALL

biggytitbo

Wow, with this Novichok they are really spoiling us. 3 months on when direct exposure to a fresh batch was unable to kill anyone, some apparent residue mysteriously left miles away hospitalises two random people. Amazing story.

biggytitbo

EVIL PUTIN STRIKES AGAIN, CANCEL THE WORLD CUP IMMEDIETLY.

Crisps?

biggytitbo

These two should count themselves lucky, at least they've now found someone to buy their house at massively overinflated price.

What is this referring to?

Presumably Skripal, although he gets the date wrong.

Ah, I thought maybe I'd missed something else. Seems like a weird thing to make a mistake about though, especially for the Police and Crime Commissioner there. Can't imagine Wiltshire is that eventful in between chemical weapon attacks.

Unless something else did happen... Hmm... Or was supposed to happen... Hmm...

Blumf

So... we're still waiting on MI5 to pull their finger out and find this, supposed, Russian agent running around with a tub of Novichok?

To be fair it doesn't seem all that long ago. But no, not even I think it was just last month.

We've not even had any possible suspects, CCTV, witnesses, sightings etc, almost as if the suspects don't actually exist.

The Guardian report linked above has names and their best mate recounting their last 24 hours together which makes interesting reading.

(dunno if the Indy one has all that or not)

biggytitbo

Not sure if the British gov actually want this story back in the headlines considering it reminds everyone they have all 3 victims in some kind of captivity unable to communicate with relatives or the outside world. Which is totally normal of course.

unlikely they owned it given that neither was working and she appeared to be living in a homeless hostel

from the Graun article

QuoteHobson said he visited Rowley's home in Muggleston Road, Amesbury, on Saturday morning. Sturgess, who lives in Salisbury, had spent the night there.
....
He said the couple had been together for a few months and neither worked. Hobson said they were both parents.
....
The areas known to have been sealed off in the operation were: Rowley's home on Muggleton Road, Amesbury; the Amesbury Baptist Centre, Butterfield Drive, Amesbury; Raleigh Garden Green, Amesbury, where the hog roast took place; Queen Elizabeth Gardens, Salisbury; Sturgess's room at John Baker House, Rolleston Street, Salisbury; a bin outside Sturgess's home; Boots, Stonehenge Walk, Amesbury.

yeah googled that last bit and my suspicions were confirmed that that address is indeed what it looked like -

https://www.homeless.org.uk/homeless-england/service/sanctuary-supported-living-john-baker-house

i was a bit surprised about him not working and being on a new build estate (thats still being built i think) until Mrs Anything reminded me that her benefits-claiming disabled mum was moved into her two bed house on a new build while the rest of it was still going up around her

so no, you can put your home-owner gun away again

although i suppose he might have bought it then lost his job and befriended a homeless lady while the debts pile up but on balance probably not

We don't know what happened to the policeman, but it's far more likely he's back home, even back at work, and the press has agreed not to bother him.

And, to be fair, we don't know if the Skripals are being held against their will either.

And right on cue, second headline on Beeb News front page:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44717835
QuoteSergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were being monitored by the Russian authorities in the months before their poisoning, BBC Newsnight understands.

The government alleged, in a letter to Nato, that the Russian authorities had hacked into Yulia's email account in 2013.

What is all the theatre about?

BlodwynPig

I think their use of the Skripals failed to engender the outcome they desired (British public support for "actions" against Russia), so they've gone for some home grown victims to get the public to rally behind - "don't worry folks they were basically homeless down and outs (pretty easy to poison and easy to pay off as stooges)". Nationalism will be on the rise again.

Isnt Anything

sudden hypothesis based on nothing other than my own pure speculation -

1. assume this couple DO like their drugs at least a bit

2. couple go to park Friday night with their mate to chill out

3. find some discarded vial hidden in the grass and or bushes. maybe even looks like a poppers bottle. they decide to take it home with them to investigate.

4. unbeknownst to them it contained the dregs of the novichok whatever-it-was that was used to fuck up the Skripals.

5. Saturday morning they decide to see whats in the bottle

6. rest is history

Thad a recycled story as well, not to mention total non news. You don't think MI5 were working with keeping an eye on him too?

QuoteRussia expert @edwardlucas says it is not impossible for Russian state to attack #England team at the World Cup, e.g. by administering a substance to "slow them down" while they play matches
@BBCRadio2 #JeremyVineShow

Just like with the magical ever changing properties of novochik, our media have no difficulty finding some 'expert' to say whatever absolute bullshit they want to hear.

biggytitbo

DONT PANIC!
QuoteGovt minister tells me that either (1) couple came into contact with novichok by accident, probably same batch that poisoned Skripals or (2) they were specifically targeted by the Russians to panic the civilian population.  https://t.co/QYkhViBK2Z
