I am just about to start doing some contracting doing software/system engineering and need to buy myself a laptop. I will be working with VMs so need at least 16GB of RAM, a decent sized SSD, quad-core processor and reasonable graphics (not for gaming, just to design GUIs and run multiple VMs). Can anyone recommend a good model or website?

Well, when I needed a new laptop for work the firm bought me a Dell. i7 2.8Ghz 4 core processor and 16GB RAM. It's quite nippy and would do what you want I reckon, but Dell are a bit pricey. Maybe look for something with a similar spec.

Yeah that sounds about right. Cheers

Not that spec but I bought a similar hp laptop over a year ago and it is atrocious, unusable for me. Not sure if there is something wrong with it but needs to update all the fucking time and once, without warning, took 3 hours to configure updates even though I don't remember installing any before I'd last shut down. Out of the box something was causing the cpu to get stuck on 99% usage, had to fiddle about with custom power settings to stop that. Cheap plastic feeling. Avoid.

OK. Thanks for the advice. Has anyone had any dealings with pcspecialist.co.uk?
