There is if you're a billionaire. Are you?

According to Forbes he debuted on the billionaire list in 2012 so he must've been 41 at that point. I've got 9 years.

Has it been pointed out that Musk:

A) Has a strange way of forming 'M' and 'P' sounds. He looks like a ventriloquist when he says words like 'company'. I don't know if this is some upper class stiff lip shit but he keeps his top teeth visible throughout. Very strange looking.

B) Looks a lot like Steve Coogan, with his expressions, nasal flares, general face movements. I guarantee that Coogan could nail him in an impression.

He's fucked surely?

Nah. It'll be an out-of-court settlement, forced by Tesla's shareholders.

Urinal Cake

Musk settled out of court regarding the whole farting unicorn thing even though it was 'lame.'

But this diver guy probably wants to see Musk grovel and be humiliated so I expect a lot more satisfying result ala Depp apology etc.

Depressed Beyond Tables

I doubt Musk would call diver guy's bluff unless he knew legally there was at least grounds for a counter-sue, or that financially he could walk it.

Reading that BBC 'what is defamation' part it might not be as clear cut as it first seems, though it will be down to the diver if there's an OCS and seeing as he was a) called a paedophile b) only suing for $75k maybe he does wanna see Musk squirm

I wouldn't get your hopes up, pal. Maybe give all your money to Richard Branson instead:

Apparently in the US the burden is on the plaintiff to prove their claim, how the hell do you disprove Musk's claims?

(or is it only to prove you've been harmed by the claim not the claim itself?)

Has to be false + damage to reputation

In tech news, man equipped with douchebag consciousness (supposedly) achieves self-awareness. More than a few days old now, I know...

https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/9/16/167

Quote from: Linus TorvaldsWhich brings me to the *NOT* normal part of the last week: the discussions (both in public mainly on the kernel summit discussion lists and then a lot in various private communications) about maintainership and the kernel community.  Some of that discussion came about because of me screwing up my scheduling for the maintainer summit where these things are supposed to be discussed.

And don't get me wrong.  It's not like that discussion itself is in any way new to this week - we've been discussing maintainership and community for years. We've had lots of discussions both in private and on mailing lists.  We have regular talks at conferences - again, both the "public speaking" kind and the "private hallway track" kind.

No, what was new last week is really my reaction to it, and me being perhaps introspective (you be the judge).

There were two parts to that.

One was simply my own reaction to having screwed up my scheduling of the maintainership summit: yes, I was somewhat embarrassed about having screwed up my calendar, but honestly, I was mostly hopeful that I wouldn't have to go to the kernel summit that I have gone to every year for just about the last two decades.

Yes, we got it rescheduled, and no, my "maybe you can just do it without me there" got overruled.  But that whole situation then started a whole different kind of discussion.  And kind of incidentally to that one, the second part was that I realized that I had completely mis-read some of the people involved.

This is where the "look yourself in the mirror" moment comes in.

So here we are, me finally on the one hand realizing that it wasn't actually funny or a good sign that I was hoping to just skip the yearly kernel summit entirely, and on the other hand realizing that I really had been ignoring some fairly deep-seated feelings in the community.

It's one thing when you can ignore these issues.  Usually it's just something I didn't want to deal with.

This is my reality.  I am not an emotionally empathetic kind of person and that probably doesn't come as a big surprise to anybody.  Least of all me.  The fact that I then misread people and don't realize (for years) how badly I've judged a situation and contributed to an unprofessional environment is not good.

This week people in our community confronted me about my lifetime of not understanding emotions.  My flippant attacks in emails have been both unprofessional and uncalled for.  Especially at times when I made it personal.  In my quest for a better patch, this made sense to me. I know now this was not OK and I am truly sorry.

The above is basically a long-winded way to get to the somewhat painful personal admission that hey, I need to change some of my behavior, and I want to apologize to the people that my personal behavior hurt and possibly drove away from kernel development entirely.

I am going to take time off and get some assistance on how to understand people's emotions and respond appropriately.

Following this, the Linux community announced that will adopt the Contributor Covenant, created by Coraline Ada Ehmke, which is outlined as follows:

QuoteIn the interest of fostering an open and welcoming environment, we as contributors and maintainers pledge to making participation in our project and our community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.

And you can imagine how well that went down, though the core of the criticisms/invective seems to be more that it has come from an 'SJW' (and that it is governed by a "post-meritocracy" worldview) than that there was no need for a CoC at all. There have been the inevitable asshole apologists, yes, but I think there are enough with the wit to see there is a need for making sure people aren't being driven away by unprofessional and abusive behaviour - even if they don't like the way it's being implemented right now. You sometimes need to squint between the lines to see it, I'll grant you, but I think it's there.

All the same, please be warned that the comments in that GitHub link are fucking pathetic.

I know Torvolds is supposedly a stroppy arsehole but I'm not really sure what triggered his apology there? The fact he considered not going to a conference?

Well, then moved the conference so it would fit in with his holiday plans. The register has an article on it.

QuoteReading between the lines, it possibly sounds as though at least some maintainers hoped to use the summit to discuss his temper, and how, in their minds, it was driving talented programmers away from the vital project – and his attempt to dodge the event was the final straw.

It's to do with his possible non-presence at a meeting of maintainers - that's not a conference really. Awareness of both his ongoing personal.importance to the project and how important maintainers felt it was to talk with him about behaviour, if I understand correctly.

My planned thread title was "Computing communist coc'd".

Sorry. I thought it was somewhat relevant as I had the impression Torvalds was one of those guys who 'techbros' tend to look up to, while not being one himself in the usual sense. Hardly seemed worth starting a new thread over.

They'll have to lookup to ESR or Theo wossname now, I guess. Dark days.

(For context: even as a socialist and whatever else I'm not going to risk looking up to RMS.)

Have a big sweary meltdown at someone's substandard code and they give you a talking to and implement a code of conduct, do it to someone who's fucked up a risotto and they put you on channel 4.
