I meant the thread title.

Well, if an inadvisable thread title is the worst that you expect Brexit to inflict on you personally, then you are Jacob Rees-Mogg and I claim my 5 guineas.

So it looks like Raab has reverted to the Davis position that the "divorce payment" is to purchase a future relationship with the eu, rather than a settling of an outstanding bill. That's going to set things back a few more months.

It's really depressing seemingly no mainstream politician has the fortitude to stand up and announce 'This is bullshit. Pump the brakes for fuck's sake'.

I reckon one of the serious headcases is gonna have a road-to-Damascus conversion soon. Boris would be the obvious candidate, if he hadn't already had one road-to-Damascus conversion along the lines of, if he stopped being a Remainer and became a Leaver it'd screw his mate Dave and make him PM.

Why, nobody's going to read through them?

Brexit 3: Watch as many things dear to me are taken away without my consent.

Dr Rock

I just signed this

https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-tory-brexit-momentum-petition?source=direct_link&

This is the email text so i don't have to paraphrase. It's just for Momentum members btw. I've randomly bolded some words:

I just signed a petition encouraging Momentum's National Coordinating Group to call a vote of all our members and support a campaign to Stop Tory Brexit.

We are proud members of Momentum and consistent supporters of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party and of the 2017 election manifesto. We deplore the persistent attacks of the right-wing of the Labour Party, but we are equally opposed to the disastrous Tory Brexit now on offer.

We are a democratic socialist movement and under Momentum's constitution we can trigger a vote of all members with signatures from around 4000 of us - so please add your name now, and spread the word!

Click here to join me and take action: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-tory-brexit-momentum-petition?source=email&

Thanks!

Reading back, it's maybe not clear so i'll cut and paste this

To: Momentum's National Coordinating Group
From: Dr Rock

It is clear now that Labour's six tests for Tory Brexit will not be met. It looks like there will be no real trade deal before we crash out irreversibly next March, and no alternative can be negotiated in time. We gotta shit or get off the pot, basically. The decisive moment for Labour and Britain is this autumn.

We call on Momentum's National Coordinating Group to hold a vote of all our members this summer to decide whether to oppose Tory Brexit, and whether to campaign for Labour to hold a vote at Annual Conference in September on giving the people the final say on the Brexit deal.

We must defeat the government's deal in Parliament. We want a general election but the Tories don't want to give us one, so we must force their hand. We are left with only one option. Labour must be prepared to support a people's vote on the final deal – giving the British people the chance to reconsider Tory Brexit, in light of the mess the government has made of the negotiations and the damage it will do to the communities Labour represents.

We believe such a position would win more votes and seats, helping in future to elect the Corbyn-led government which this country so badly needs. Many Leave voters already think Brexit was a bad decision. Many more support the idea of giving the people the final say.

The biggest threat to Labour's socialist programme would be for us to take over the reins of government just as Brexit's worst consequences are hitting. Tory Brexit will trash the economy, scrap workers' rights and bind us to a future of deregulation and dodgy trade deals. We cannot allow our transformation of Britain to be endangered in this way.

We cannot abandon our comrades across the continent. We must fight alongside them against the disaster of neoliberalism and against the racism and xenophobia of the far-right, which were the driving forces behind the Brexit vote here at home. Offering the possibility of staying in Europe could help a British socialist government secure victories for workers beyond our own shores – taking on the neoliberal aspects of the EU, and building a continent genuinely capable of controlling capital and providing decent rights for all.

Labour members overwhelmingly support Jeremy Corbyn's leadership and oppose Tory Brexit. Let's stand up for our principles, stop this disaster, get into government — and transform the UK and Europe together!

I think Corbyn has been wise to sit on the fence all this time, but if we're going off a cliff edge and that's the only deal/no deal on the table, it's time to stick your neck out and say 'this isn't what people were voting for. We probably need another referendum to be sure. You scared of that punk? Why would you be scared of that? Do it.'

Paul Calf

could someone remind me why we're pressing for a second referendum when the last one turned out to be the biggest social disaster since WWII?

Dr Rock

Because I hope - after a summer's recesss and people weigh up the alternatives, a referendum on 'cliff edge to certain disaster or stay in cosy old Brexit' could be won by 'let's call the whole thing off.'

You hopefully have all the people that ween't old enough to vote last time, a few old Brexiteers died off by then, plus ensure the ex-pat commuity can vote if they are still British citizens, and the masses that didn't vote (assumed to have thought thought 'No Brexit' would win) actually turning up to vote, and thus Brexit could be averted.

Any other ideas re averting Brexit welcome.

Bhazor

So how much a week is the NHS getting in the new deal?

IMO, you're losing Europe, I don't think there can be a way back, do you really want to hand Blair, Chuka and their friends another way to pressurise the leadership and split the Party?  Think before you act, Europe's gone but you can be outside the EU with a genuine socialist in charge or outside the EU with a Tory or Torylite Prime Minister.  Acting on emotion and impulse was what got the UK into this mess in the first place.

Brexit 3: Watch as many things dear to me are taken away without my consent.

On that note:

QuoteEuropean Citizens' Initiative: Commission registers initiative on 'Permanent European Union Citizenship'
The main objective of the proposed initiative is to guarantee that European citizenship and its associated rights cannot be lost once they have been attained. The organisers cite in particular the context of Brexit and the future loss of EU citizenship and rights of UK citizens.

The Commission's decision to register the Initiative concerns only the legal admissibility of the proposal. The Commission has not analysed the substance at this stage.
http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-4566_en.htm

They haven't setup the system to collect 'endorsements' yet, however. And the last one only got 23,000 signatures.

(EU petitions - 'Citizen Initiatives' - are a bit odd in how they collect signatures. You have to run your own signature collection system, which can either being the free and open source EU-provided one, or a bespoke one. Something about the mania for marketisation at work? Edit: Although currently the Commission will run it for you if you ask nicely.)

Well if not that then what?
My ill-informed guess at a current best case:

British government falls in the next few months, Labour convincingly wins general election, convinces EU to postpone it for about 5 years (giving some actual time to work out what we want and some of the blood to ebb out of the whole thing, and coinciding with parliament terms).

Good news! Brexit will make it easier for us to execute our own citizens. It'd be unpatriotic not to.

I always suspected there would be calls to bring back the death penalty post-Brexit, but they've come even earlier than I thought. Admittedly, there is a broader Europe-wide policy about never using capital punishment so we might have to leave the ECHR too. As far as I know, Belarus is both the only European country to use the death penalty, and it's also the only one that isn't in the ECHR.

Paul Calf

May has always wanted to leave the ECHR so there'll be no pushback there.

Going down the same path as a post-Stalinist failed state - sounds about right. At least we'll have blue passports and imperial measurements.

Just to add to everything else, there are now concerns that food stocks for next year might be dangerously low due to the impact the unexpectedly long drought is having on farming.

Still, I'm sure it'll be fine once we've TAKEN BACK CONTROL. Fresh produce will literally rain down from the heavens by the sound of it.

Jesus christ

QuoteSome claim that it is a recruiting sergeant for terrorism against the West, and that incarceration there, or a death sentence, would make martyrs of Kotey and El-Sheikh. Maybe. But there is a greater risk if they are not dealt with effectively.

A vital purpose of judicial punishment is deterrence. What is the message to would-be jihadists if these men, accused of perpetrating the most horrific crimes imaginable – including torture and an estimated 27 beheadings – were allowed to return to our streets without so much as a trial?

I don't think he quite gets how laws work.

QuoteOf course both execution and detention without trial run contrary to British ethical principles. But history proves that, in war time, we must sometimes adapt our values to secure victory. And be in no doubt: we are at war. Even today, some have difficulty comprehending that, because this is not a conventional war with tanks rolling across the plains and dogfights in the skies.

But as successive heads of MI5 have made clear, we face a threat that will go on for generations. We need to adapt better to it than we have so far. Mr Javid's decision indicates that the Government now realises this. But it also shines a spotlight on the weakness of our previous policies.

This is a thing that was published in one of the leading Brexiteer papers. Woo Brexit. I don't know how we're even going to be able to handle all this freedom we'll be getting as we escape the fascist neo liberal prison state of the EUSSR.
