Ambrose returns looking bigger and meaner. Always nice to see a man accept he's going bald. Hopefully will turn on Seth at SummerSlam.

He looks like a Poundland Triple H.

Ja'moke

That Reigns and Heyman segment would have been better if it ended after Heyman gave him the letter. Leaves some intrigue going into the PPV over whether Reigns will join forces with Heyman.

Instead, it turned out to be a ruse and I still don't really get the point of it??

mikeyg27

Unless the letter said "I'm about to pepper-spray you and then Brock's going to come out and beat you up but just play along and on Sunday let's be friends".

If Paul and Brock falling out was a work then it suggests the wrestlers are aware of the cameras backstage even when there's no interviewer

Which raises yet more questions

Oh well, it's Smackdown night!

Deanjam

Most unintentionally funny bit I've seen in ages. Creepy perv Orton.

New Jack

Orton changes his punt to bouncing his cock off your skull.

New Jack

I'm playing WWE 2K15 on PlayStation Now and some of the Superstar Ratings ™ are weird now.

Sheamus is 93
HHH is 91
Roman is 89, so is Bray Wyatt
Ambrose is 88
RVD is 86
Kane is 91

This Meltzer and Peyton Royce situation is a real storm in a teacup right now. He did a 36 minute grovelling apology on his radio show today.

New Jack

Fucking hell, I think I heard that radio show and he was nice as can be and framed it as not a go at her looks but how she's packaged. If anything it's Alvarez dumbing down that point

QuoteMeltzer: The IIconics got boring-ed out. They're another one. I thought they had a cool act in NXT, and on the main roster? I don't get a thing out of them. I don't think their promos are particularly good, their wrestling isn't good. I think they even like - I think Peyton Royce's transformation to look more attractive. I don't know, I don't want to say. But I don't think that...

Alvarez: She was more attractive in NXT?

Meltzer: I thought so, yes. To me, yes. I would say so. But that's neither here nor there.

Alvarez: No one's saying she's unattractive, by the way, everybody.

Meltzer: I know, no shit. Yeah, I didn't say it at all. But I don't think, she doesn't stand out to me - when she was in NXT she did...

So Dave says sorry:

I don't agree with him about Royce but I feel sorry for Meltzer on this one. Wrestlers have always been criticised, rightly or wrongly, for their look for as long as he's been covering the business both within and without. It's a physical form of entertainment where aesthetic is important and countless performers have sacrificed everything trying to maintain their look so they can stay on the card in a very competitive business.

You can go back a few pages and see that I have been critical of Kevin Owens' appearance in this thread because I don't think his physique makes him a believable threat to the talent on the main roster and it's why he's being thrown to Braun or getting stuck in pointless feuds with authority figures rather than competing for the titles.

So if the women's evolution is about the women being treated the same as the men, it makes sense that you should be able to criticise them for how they look if you truly believe it undermines their character. It works the other way too; Nia Jax shouldn't lose weight. Ronda and Asuka shouldn't be skinny either.

up_the_hampipe

Wrestlers and certain wrestling fans are always ready to pounce on Meltzer. There's an inexplicable fury he inspires in so many people and now that he's actually fucked up in a transparent way, it's time for a pile on party. He deserved to be called out, probably, he should have apologised, if he meant it, and maybe he deserved a bit of criticism for part of his initial apology. But this is all an unnecessary mess that's dredging up long held bitter feelings. It couldn't be less about Peyton Royce at this point.

Yep, spot on. He was wrong, he recognised this and his apology seemed completely genuine. The reaction to him from the WWE and some sections of the IWC is entirely about who he is rather than what he said.

Ja'moke

What Meltzer said was dumb (he says a lot of dumb shit), but yeah, he apologised and owned up to his mistake. But as others have said, there is a lot of hatred of Meltzer among wrestlers, especially in WWE, I guess those who don't like him "exposing the business" or whatever, and they are now using this to pile on him.

New Jack

I don't even see tons wrong with what he originally said, I think Alvarez fucked up by asking if he found her more attractive in NXT as the context was blandification of callups. Gotta love Bryan's 'nobody is saying she isn't attractive', I'd put money on 95% of the outraged folk not having listened in the first place

But he's being pilloried and the newsletter is delayed. Everyone is having a go at SEXIST MONSTER DAVE MELTZER

BeardFaceMan

As has been said, a wrestlers look is a big part of their gimmick and it gets commented on all the time. The only mistake they made was to use the word 'attractive', bringing a sexual connotation to their conversation. Not that I'm a fan of dirt sheet 'journalists' but he clearly wasnt talking about how much he fancied her, just a bad choice of words really to discuss a change in look.

BeardFaceMan

Is All In going to be shown anywhere in this country? Come to think of it, other than the WOS reboot, is there any wrestling other than WWE on UK TV at the moment?

I think it was Meltzer's "She was a lot lighter in NXT" remark which caused the outrage, as many assumed he was talking about her weight. He was most likely referring to her boob-job, which is still a pretty stupid and shitty thing for him to say.

Impact airs on 5Spike, which I assume is somewhere on Sky.

I believe All-In can be viewed on the FITE app? I've never tried it though and don't know much about it to be honest.

WWE is a company run on body image. Discussion of the wrestler's appearance is completely fair game. This feels like a witch hunt. My favourite was Tye Dillinger sticking his oar in, a man who had to apologise for rape tweets just a couple of weeks ago. For my money, once you've taken the WWE dollar you have no right to taking any moral high ground. Where were these people's tweets about the women being banned from Saudi Arabia? Or the Moolah situation? Or the rehiring of racist Hogan? Or Randy Orton's bullshit?

To be fair to Corey Graves, he posted on social media about his concerns over the Saudi Arabia situation (still commentated on the show mind). And New Day and Titus both posted well-reasoned, thoughtful responses to the Hogan situation.

rjd2

big Dave can at times be incoherent which is part of his charm, his comments were poor but thankfully he said sorry.

The pile on party happens everywhere although while some who are kicking him I give props to and are good people, however  the likes of Seth Rollins getting involved is silly. The man who left his missus for a Nazi (no not a right winger, a genuine Nazi) and has called fans ring rats previously.

Deanjam

Yeah, Seth's tweet seemed like more an attempt at a lame joke than any genuine empathy.

New Jack

I chuckled at Fit Finlay because getting sanctimonious about what Dave does, calling him essentially fake ('supposed journalist') is hilariously rich.

Dude, you pretended to fight for a living. You train people in combat theatre. It's artificial action. Make-believe martial arts. It has less prestige than ballet and less cultural standing than soap operas, worse writing than sitcoms and more sleaze than porn.

Whoever at WWE greenlighted the hit on Big Dave must be really happy with how it turned out

Some really sad news: Tri.Moon has passed away. He made this amazing WCW Desire video for OSW's final Nitro episode (as well as the current Botchamania intro) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geM7g2l88BE&frags=pl%2Cwn

hummingofevil

Couple more things. A few weeks back Meltzer said something like "she's put on a lot of weight" when discussing Tess Blanchard in context of her increasing muscle mass and becoming a "powerhouse" wrestler. I remember at the time cringing a bit as it felt a bit blunt to describe women in such a way even though he was right and it was meant as a compliment. I hoped it was just a slip of tongue but he's done it again and really fucked yo this time.

One other very minor défense for him is that they spend about a quarter of the time discussing weight in context of MMA so I can see why it wasn't a total no-go area for them. It's ridiculous how he's said that as a euphemism for a boob job though. Idiots.

However, the  pile on just  my piss boil. There has been a growing move to try to stick one on him for a while with Bischoff and Pritchard stuff and ultimately seeing all the WWE wrestlers go for him after he has apologised (albeit clumsily) shows how tribal, clueless, rotten and hypocritical the whole organisation is from top to bottom.

Does make you wonder what proper shit Meltzer has on Vince and others within WWE mind. Bet there are a few stories that would be deeply embarrassing at best if they ever came out. Then again maybe I've been listening to too much  Lapsed Fan...

rjd2

Its been discussed before, but they need to be very careful with these internet pile ins, as there is plenty of stuff from those guys past that could hurt them some time in the future.  Rollins as I outlined earlier and we had the wretched story about Orton's cock only this week.

Shocked at how more sleaze has came out about Vince also especially in this climate.

Very sad. His 'Off The Air' series was really cool and fascinating. Stuff like that is what the internet was made for.

From the Newsletter of Wrestling Observers:

QuoteI ended up being in the eye of the storm this week based on comments that I made
on Wrestling Observer Radio last week.

For those who defended me, thanks. But I was wrong the way I worded things. Yes,
things were taken out of context and the meaning espoused to what I said wasn't
what I meant. Even saying that, I was still wrong and apologized, actually
immediately for it, to Peyton Royce. It was sincere. I knew the fact I
apologized and sincerely felt bad wasn't going to matter. And I know many felt I
made a big mistake in doing so. But this was not a political decision, it was a
decision based on my own feeling of right and wrong, and I was wrong. It's a
very tricky issue because I hate objectifying women or men based on looks while
covering a business that is so heavily based on looks and bodies and where
judgments are made. It's really difficult because this is a business where
cosmetic look plays a gigantic factor in who gets pushed and who doesn't. It's
the nature of the entertainment business. To ignore that fact would really be
not doing a part of my job. But others do the same job and I've been lucky
enough to be a major player, and thus under a heavier microscope. But I still
shouldn't have said what I said. It is a difficult balancing act to be honest in
analysis, but that's not an excuse. We all make mistakes and all you can do is
learn from them. I've learned from this one. It won't happen again.

Hopefully this drags on and on and on

That absolutely spot on tbf. It's what he should have said in first place.
