TOCMFIC

Never even HEARD of those films. Shit man, take camera and film it:)

You want to know what REALLY fucking sucks? Hicks was my comedy idol. Loved the guys material, while my pretentious artsy friends didn't because he was too crude etc...

Then I read in Vox that he died... ON MY FUCKING BIRTHDAY! Every year my birthday is tinged with sadness as another year without Hicks has passed:(

Next Thursday on Radio 1 'One World 12 midnight until 2am'

Quote26th February
Kurt and Bill - celebrating the life and works of Kurt Kobain and Bill Hicks, ten years on from their deaths.

A Passing Turk Slipper

Oops, Rou Rou fust wrote the same thing but actually got the facts right. Sorry, ignore me.

another Mr. Lizard

The 10th anniversary of Bill's death is also being marked at Derby's Metro Cinema this coming Thursday at 6 p.m.  - I've been asked to host a combined tribute night to Mr. Hicks and Johnny Cash (who would have been 72 years old on the 26th), entitled, not surprisingly, 'The Men In Black'. We can't promise any new Hicks stuff but will be showing some of his familiar routines as well as rather desperately attempting to link together the careers of Cash and Hicks. So if you want to see another Mr. Lizard floundering in front of a large audience, be there.

Quote"His unique status seems to stem from the fact that he died tragically young, and therefore retains the seductive perfume of unfulfilled promise. It's the Princess Diana syndrome," says Harkness.

I'm sure he would've loved that

Nah, Hicks was just a superb comic. Diana was an overprivileged whore.

Incidentally, I bought those 3 videos at top of thread from Sacred Cow - bloody good stuff!

We understand some people would like to host tribute events for the 10th anniversary of Bill's death - this is OK under the sole condition that there should not be an admission fee and there should be a box or jar near the stage or screen (not at the door) where people can donate to cancer research

Statement from Hicks's mother Mary Reese Hicks

from that BBC link...

£6 contribution... hmmm.

Is any one going to the Hicks tribute in London at the Cobhan Club in Kennsington? Thursday night from 7.30 pm?

The Bill Hicks 10th Anniversary Tribute
is a look back at Bill's life and career for those
that loved him. It gives them a chance to remember Bill on
the 10th anniversary of his death, and to give money in his name
to the Bill Hicks Wildlife Foundation, set up to save the lives of the
Texas animals that he loved so much. The night includes:
8 - 9.10 - all new documentary not seen in UK
9.15 - 10.35 - Bill does Elvis - rare home movies
- the complete banned Letterman set
- Igby's - his last taped show
- Counts of the Netherworld pilot
- classic routines - The Gulf War, Rockstars
Sane Man, Goat Boy and It's Just a Ride
10.40 - Raffle (auto entry) - full works of Bill Hicks
10.45 - 1pm - party with DJ 'Big' Rob Cotterill
Bill Hicks was arguably the greatest comedian of the last
20 years, and was often compared to Lenny Bruce, as much
for his cultural significance as his ability to make people
laugh. He was thought provoking, confrontational, vicious,
transcendent, brilliant and extremely funny.
His best comedy albums -- Relentless, Arizona Bay and
Rant in E-Minor -- are classics, recorded evidence of his
importance; his UK Live at the Dominion gig showed his
complete mastery of his craft. People called him "God's
comic." But he was more than just a comedian. He was a
philosopher, a preacher, a prophet of rage, spreading his
message through laughter.
He died of pancreatic cancer on Feb 26th 1994, at the age
of just 32. He never achieved widespread mainstream
success and he probably never would have, because he
delighted in taking on politicians, organized religion,
television, the media and other institutions, exposing the
lies and hypocrisies that surround us.However, as he liked
to point out at the end of his later act, 'it's just a ride'.
Bill was more popular in the UK than virtually anywhere
else, and his love of British audiences was well known.
When he died, he was about to move here to start a TV
series, Counts of the Netherworld, and as UK fans, we are
proud to be putting on this event with the blessing of Kevin
Booth, Bill's partner in Sacred Cow Productions.
"I left in love, in laughter, and in truth,
and wherever truth, love and laughter
abide, I am there in spirit." Bill Hicks

Capuchin

Fuck! That sounds very good, I've already got gig tickets booked though.
Bah!

The Plaque Goblin

I've got the chance to get a copy of that Sane Man video for £15 (inc P&P).

Is it worth it?

mrpants

Yes, definitely.

In my opinion it's his best video.

It Was Cancer

Mrpants: Out of curiousity, Mr Pants, Blackadder reference, or Mr Pants, the Nintendo character? (considering it's a comedy forum probably the former)

mrpants

Erm, actually it's a username a mate gave me when he sorted out my internet connection when I was about 15.  7 years later and I'm still too lazy to think of a new one.

But let's pretend it's a Blackadder reference....

This looks like it might be very interesting, and it won't be available to stream at a later date so should be worth recording.

Just to say BBC R4 Today programme had a piece on Hicks this morning, brief comments from Bill Bailey, John Lahr and a Times correspondent who didn't think Hicks was much good.

Mentioned the Manc event.
