Because I'm a disgusting fat cunt it turns out I have diabetes, just back from the doctor now. Trying not to feel shockingly depressed over the whole thing, but really struggling. Does anyone on here have it? And have any tips or advice on how not to die?

Danger Man

Very low calorie diet for eight weeks.

Job done.

Yeah, I've heard you can reverse it, don't be too upset, and if you get on the right tablets, it's not that bad. My dad has it and he just carries on as normal as far as I can tell.

Charles Addams lived nearly 50 years after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, controlling it only with diet. A friend of mine controls it with a mixture of diet and medication, and her blood glucose levels are stable and normal.

samadriel

Type 2 diabetes is no biggie, just take your metformin and you'll be right.  Couldn't hurt to eat less carbs and get more exercise though.  I'm a type 1, so I'm injecting myself with insulin all the time, it's a bit of a drag, although I've been doing it since 1990 so it's second nature by now.

Agree, why bother with tablets when you can rid yourself of it altogether.

Small Man Big Horse

Thank you all, that's really reassuring to hear.

Expect me to become a monstrous shit over the next eight weeks then as now I've given up smoking cigarettes, weed, and rarely drink, food was my last vice, but hopefully after that I'll return to being only a slightly annoying shit.

Barry Admin

You can do it. I've done much the same, although not through choice with weed. I need to sort my diet again, but do enough walking that I feel I can eat some shite. It's easy to slip into old ways though - I think the key is probably having a regime of some kind, eg a treat day where you can have a Chinese or a bag of crisps. Stop it becoming a thoughttless habit again.

Good luck, let us know how you progress.

Barry Admin

Also, hopefully you've reached the point where you realise it's actually great not being tied to all this shit!

I should probably quit the vaping again, but still really enjoy it, and it has no apparent physical drawbacks. It was different when I used a more powerful setup, but since dialing it back and avoiding certain juices (custard flavours and a local brand), I don't have to use my inhaler. I'm going down to get some more RY juice in a bit in fact, it's a tobacco, caramel and vanilla flavour that's buttery and sweet without being sickening. Absolutely fucking gorgeous, much better than smelly old stinking fegs that make you honk.

Sorry to hit the cautionary note here but it's not particularly great to have if you have any other issues. I had a stroke last year at 38 because my blood sugar was wildly out of control, partly down to mental health issues. Do whatever the doc advises to get yours under control.

Consignia

Think of it as a super power.

My mum's stepmum had diabetes, and as far as I can tell it meant she had to eat a special horrible-tasting easter egg at Easter, but that was the only difference.

Thank you for that, and yeah, will keep you updated. I've an appointment with a specialist next monday so will learn then how bad it is, and also what I need to do to stop it developing, but I'm definitely interested in the low calorie diet thing in the hope reversing it, and then changing my diet so that it doesn't return.

I do still miss the weed to be honest, I was doing quite well on that front but over the last couple of days the desire has been strong. Fortunately I now live in a no smoking house, so even if I wanted to I wouldn't be able to smoke any.

I do still vape as well, but like you I'm not aware of any downsides so for the time being will stick with it, though at some point do plan to give it up. At least it's really cheap, since you recommended 88vape I barely spend any money on it at all, so thank you again for that.

I'm really sorry to hear that, and yeah, my blood sugar is partially a mental health thing as well. Just need to learn how to not comfort eat when I am feeling really low, and do plan to ask my doctor for a referral to get help on that side of things.

You know what though, I've been lucky. I have a slight weakness in my right arm and leg and I have some short term memory issues. On a bad day the after effects are really pronounced but day to day I'm ok. Most people who have a stroke don't come out of it as well. And it's prompted a change in my lifestyle to the extent I've dropped five stone since Christmas. But going through it is horrific and if you can spare yourself the risk of it then make whatever changes are needed.

Desolation.

I bought and ate three bags on a whim when I was in the shop yesterday. Well I waited until I got outside, but yeah, left to my own devices I struggle to be sensible. People like me seem to do better with firm boundaries, such as treat days.

Yeah, my dad got diabetes about six years ago (he's 87) but also has had Addisons disease since 1981 (his adrenal gland packed up). It was a nightmare trying to find the correct cocktail of drugs to sort both conditions. Fifty percent of the conversations I have with him now are regarding his readings and sugar levels. You might find you'll have to always eat your main meal no later than 6:30pm too. Other than that, he seems to just get on with it like that generation always do. You'll be fine, mate and in a year's time you'll probably look and feel the fittest you've ever been.

Hi SMBH,i've had type 2 for about 8 years now treated with 2tablets metformin and empagliflozin, and to be honest that's kept a lid on it pretty much.At first I really tried with my diet but the last 3 years I have been pretty self destructive in my behaviour and I live on chocolate, cakes and biscuits with no real ill effects.
I did lose 4 and a half stone in weight and have kept it off and I have managed to stay off full sugar drinks(possibly the cause) and the Diabeties nurse encourages as much exercise as possible.

royce coolidge

What I meant to say SMBH is don't get too down, you are part of a massive rapidly expanding club, and drugs and sensible living
should stop it affecting your life much.
And if you are feeling intrepid these 2-3 month low calorie diets can seem to "shock" the body back into line along with lots of exercise,
I don't know how determined you feel right now.

earl_sleek

I got diagnosed with type 2 a year or two ago while getting checked out for something else - wasn't showing any symptoms. I was pretty fucked off to get it at 32, and not even that fat either (though it turns out I've got some weird autoimmune-related shit going on that is causing me other problems and may be a factor). Keep on your meds and makes some changes to your diet and you should be ok though. It's not the life sentence (or death sentence) that it initially feels like.

Thanks for both of your posts kind sir, it is greatly appreciated. Today I'm having a final "fuck it I'm going to eat terribly" day, but from tomorrow I'm determined to start eating healthily. I found out about all of this as I've been having terrible leg spasms at night, so need to eat heathily to stop them as it's been a right bastard and I've been struggling to get more than a couple of hours of sleep recently.

Really sorry to hear of this, SMBH. Can I make a small suggestion? Feel free to tell me to fuck off and mind my own business, but maybe skip the last day of eating terribly and just start now. I honestly think when the day is done you'll feel empty remourse if you indulge and you'll feel better if you take a grip of the issue now.

Ah, it's a bit late I'm afraid! I've found this process works well for me in the past though, when I gave up smoking weed I had one final weekend of getting ridiculously stoned but then threw away what I had left and haven't smoked since, and did a similar thing when I gave up cigarettes.

BlodwynPig

Type 1 for decades, not dead yet. You'll be a-ok. Apparently there is a new wonder drug in the US that gets rid of diabetes (I think type 2), and helps you lose weight!

Sorry to hear this SMBH, that's pure arse. Are you still subject to restrictions on how many nice relaxing "walks" you can have?
