Quote from: manticore on August 23, 2018, 12:05:24 AMWell since wosl is refusing point-blank to answer my very politely phrased demand concerning 'What Goes On'

Soz.  Studio.  The keys are a bit too prominent on the live version, although it's a blast.  I tend to end up liking the version I hear first the most.  It's the same with Ocean; the alt. versions on the Loaded deluxe set are good, but they don't hit the spot like the one I heard first, on the VU album.

God, yes.  This or another of theirs ought to be on mine instead of the Au Pairs' one, which was basically put there to occupy a place in the queue until something more vital came to mind and took its position, but somehow sneaked through (genuine LOL when I spotted it in the posted line-up).

So it is! Blends in beautifully.

I don't think John Peel liked Thin White Rope, probably too a bit trad for him, which means that in my little musical world they didn't really exist.

If I could face doing a list, I think these three would have a good chance. The sound at the beginning of The Friend Catcher is exhilarating, still remember the first time I heard it.

"Rowland had spent a lot of time setting it up. He had all these pedals, including a thing called a Blue Box, which didn't work properly but made a great sound, a complete fluke. He also had a Space Echo which is a tape echo machine which repeats the sound, but Rowland being the sensitive fellow that he is turned every knob up to the max, which makes the thing feed back and make a constant noise. He didn't even have to touch the guitar 'cos this horrible noise was going on. He just started bashing the foot pedals. I was watching him, frantically trying to figure out what pedal to hit next"

This is a daft exercise of course, but if you impose that limitation you brought in of one song per artist, and try to let your inner jukebox do the selecting for you, allowing tunes to waft in without trying to do any pre-filtering in terms of conceptual or thematic weight or structural substance or critical reputation or whatever, you end up with choices that can surprise.   I might've figured beforehand that something from Utopia would likely be included, but stone me, it's Magic Dragon, one of their most contrived, 'novelty' things!  Ain't half got a bostin' bridge/chorus lead-in on it, though ("High in the sky..")

Today on a waiting room radio I heard Pump It Up, Gimme All Your Lovin' and I Can't Go For That.  I fully expect to be taunted by a blast of State Of Independence (either of the great versions) from somewhere before the day's through.  This is adding a bittersweet twist to that adage that it's not what you include, it's what you leave out, isn't it.

Because most of the lists have been posted by middle-aged people, I suppose?  I probably could have typed out a far more recherché line-up of artists and tossed out more obscure album tracks but I think I was trying to seek a common ground. I also prefer something obvious like Live And Let Die by Wings more than No Ball Games Around Here By Request by Shrug which would probably come in at No 348 in my top 1000 songs.
