RIP Aretha Franklin

Legendary soul singing lady no longer with us. Surprised a threads not already been put up. Released some dodgy stuff in the 80s, but so did a lot of folk. RIP, indeed.

( looks like yer man Petey Pate has put up a thread at roughly the same time. Fair play. )

I really like the two albums she did with Luther Vandross and Marcus Miller in the early 80s. Better than the synthetic-sounding later stuff with Narada Michael Walden et al.

Very sad news.  Having long had a problem with belt-'em-out singers, to my shame I only very recently got a handle on her greatness.  It came with her performance of A Natural Woman in front of Carole King and the Obamas and various other illustrious gathered for some do at the Kennedy Center.  And it properly clicked: that singer as conduit/relief-valve stuff; a lesson in what that kind of singing can be at the highest level, the full soul catharsis thing.  A truly 'shivers' performance - poor old Barack was reduced to rubble with Aretha barely out of the blocks; he was dabbing away at his eyes after about the second line.

Aretha Franklin, one of the greatest singers of all time, has died.

I know we're a - wahey! - irreverent bunch, but what a dismal way to start a thread about someone of such talent and significance.

Is this the official thread? Who's zoomin' who?

Anyway, she was towering from 65 - 74, and I'm sure she did a bunch of great stuff after but I'm not familiar. Here are some of my faves:

She was awesome, I was a big fan.

I saw that Natural Woman performance mentioned above on TV or YouTube last night, was that a coincidence or did she die yesterday?

She's been in hospital for a few days, I believe, and her family were putting out statements which were ostensibly hopeful but screamed lack of confidence.

Since I think (Think!) the Aretha/Corbyn crossover is fruitful and massive, here's Jezza on facebook:

Today we've lost one of the world's most wonderful singers, Aretha Franklin.

Her music is moving and full of hope. Respect was an inspirational anthem in the civil rights and feminist movements.

Listen to her live at Fillmore West, California.

I knew her classics as a child, but the first time I really appreciated her unique voice was when she was sampled to fuck by the Italians late 80's/early 90s

49ers - Touch Me

DjH & Stefy - Think About
https://youtu.be/GeSV7xMv43M

Starlight - Numero Uno

The tone of her voice always shined.

Word was out on the Internet earlier this week that death was pretty imminent so maybe you picked up on it subconsciously and watched a video of hers in pre-tribute.

Is there any news of the album she was to make with Stevie Wonder that was announced a while back? I noted that he was amongst the closest family and friends near the end. Given that Aretha was performing occasionally only a short while back would suggest that there might have been time put aside to make what was originally described as her final album.

I saw her do one of those ensemble things with about 4 other singers and she effortlessly blew them all off the stage. Not even trying, not an ego thing, just out it came. Incredible voice.
And about 30 years ago she did Amazing Grace at some Royal Command performance and I got tears and goosebumps... i hope someone digs it out and posts it on YouTube.

"We talked about doing some music as recent as two months ago, and we had been talking about it,” Wonder said. “There was a song that I had written called, ‘The Future.’ And we were gonna, you know, write — you know, sing it together.”

Ugh, I've spent hours trying to find a decent and accessible version of this, and the best I can do is:

https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/045283-000-A/aretha-franklin-the-legendary-concertgebouw-concert-amsterdam-1968/

It was previously on Youtube but the ghoulish fucks that own the copyright have blocked it and my usual tricks for getting round that don't work anymore apparently.

But until someone finds a better-quality link, click that one and sit back. Watch the whole thing: the awkward interviews, Aretha nervously chain-(chain-chaaaain) smoking backstage, the riotous crowd when she walks out, the way her voice falters slightly in the first few tunes* and then magnificently soars once she's got fully into the swing....

One of the best concert documents I've seen. Fuck that: one of the best things I'm aware of, full bastard stop. Look at the sweaty buggers in the crowd completely losing it.

Godspeed, Lady Soul.

*not that she sounds bad exactly, it is Aretha Franklin....

Sorry for the belated bump, but I wanted to watch the Amsterdam concert video again today and the link above has died. This one: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3t5s27 is roughly the same edit, so get it down your senses if you haven't already.
