Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but it appears they are releasing all 8 BBC series of The Goodies (apart from the original Kitten Kong)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Goodies-Complete-BBC-Collection-DVD/dp/B07F11KZJP/ref=sr_1_1

  • All eight BBC series
  • Kitten Kong - Montreux '72
  • A Collection of Goodies
  • Goodies Travelling Instant Five Minute Christmas
  • Superstar
  • The Goodies and the Beanstalk
  • The Goodies Rule O.K.?
Whilst I am very excited about this (although they should really reduce the £69.99 cost), I am a little worried that there are going to be loads of cuts.

Does anyone have any further information about what will be cut out of the shows?

I wouldn't be surprised if the spoof South African tourist commercial, with Tim as a blackface minstrel, would be one cut.

I think that was included on the previous DVD release.
Everything seemed intact on there, which was surprising.

This is an independent release isn't it?
Or are the Beeb involved?

It's Network, who did the various DVD collections (and the LWT series, which isn't included in this set) in the past - the view in this thread was that they're not likely to make any cuts.

Glad to see there's a general-release version of this set; the limited-edition one on the Network website sold out fairly quickly.

Jesus God - how long were they together? I remember watching them as a kid, but it seemed they were only around for a couple of years...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Goodies_episodes

So that's 69 BBC episodes between 1970 and 1980 (Series 1 to 8, and 2 specials in 1972) plus 7 ITV episodes in 1981-1982.

What's on the music disc? Is it just The Goodies pop stuff from the original albums that was found on the Yum Yum compilation?

Is there any of Oddie's funky score/ interludes etc on it?

TheMonk

If they made these available on iTunes I'd have them in a flash. Is this a possibility?

gepree

I mentioned earlier that it looks like Amazon are charging £69.99 for The Goodies DVD box set.

But at Network it is only £60.00 (with free shipping):

I don't think there's any bonus music disc in this version, is there?

The limited version included 3 music CDs as big dangly 'buy me' carrot (worked for me!):
QuoteThe Cricklewood Tapes: a three-CD set of original session recordings made for the series – including music, adverts and stings.

I would count 'The Goodies Rule OK' - the one with the giant Dougal and other puppets - as a special rather than as part of Series 5 as they've done there, given that the latter ended in May 1975, and the former was shown months later, on 21 December 1975 - it's also all on film and is longer than the regular episodes, at 45 minutes.

'The Goodies And The Beanstalk' is supposed to be a special too, though admittedly it can easily seem otherwise, as it was shown around halfway through Series 4.  But, like 'The Goodies Rule OK', it's all on film and runs for about 45 minutes.  I think it only got shown among those episodes because they happened to be showing the series between December and January.  It's meant to be a Christmas special.

Are these episodes still available on film?

If they are, could they have brought out a better quality Blu-ray for the specials rather than just a DVD?

Don't know how I missed that. Pre-ordered. Thanks eel.

The version with the bonus books, CD's & slice of cake was only available from the Network site - which IS sold out.

Amazon has the box of DVDs only -
Watch out when ordering though - as here's also this repackaging of the three best of's - using an identical image to the big set - that sort of thing could confuse a stupid person!

That's right - sadly the Cricklewood Tapes (3CD) are NOT included with the set you've pre-ordered.

I don't think this set is limited, so you're probably safe in waiting for the inevitable price slash in a year or two - if you want to save a bit of dosh.

Yeah, I think I will. I guess I'll just have to wait until somebody uploads The Cricklewood Tapes onto YouTube at some point.  It's the sort of thing that will probably be never officially available to buy. Infuriating. RWT all over again

I'd keep an eye on ebay - there should be 1000 copies made, so a few people might be willing to sell on their extra bits & bobs.

I was surprised to get my copy of the non-limited edition set today. Have Network released this early?

My copy arrived yesterday too - also from Network.  Amazon are still saying 24 September 2018.

I was pleased to see that in addition to an extra "Goodies Travelling Instant 5 Minute Christmas", there is also "Special Feature: An Audience With the Goodies", recorded in June 2018:
QuoteTalking to [...] Stewart Lee and [...] Dick Fiddy, the three Goodies discuss their career and the enduring popularity of the series - as well as asking questions from the audience

Interview with the Radio Times :

QuoteWatching some episodes of The Goodies again in the cold light of 2018 does illustrate the changing – and sometimes problematic – face of comedy.

Sticking the boot into white South Africa, and apartheid in particular, was quite the rarity back in 1975. But viewed today, such laudable intentions are let down by some of the methods, as well as the language. The trio also satirised the then-popular but now reviled Black and White Minstrel Show in a 1977 episode. But the message tends to get lost when the stars black up themselves.

So is it fair to say that not all of the gags work now? "Not all of the gags worked then!" says Graeme. "But we haven't edited them because the show was of its time, and I think it would be dishonest to tone down anything that may cause a jolt to the modern viewer. I think it's really interesting historically to see the attitudes and conventions of the 1970s in a modern context."
https://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-09-21/goodies-interview-tim-brooke-taylor-graeme-garden-bill-oddie/

Good news about the decision not to edit anything - can't wait to get my copy!

Uncork the Imperial Tokay, Brundles - it now is : The Cricklewood Tapes (3 x CD)

QuoteSince the early days of television, programme-makers have used music to enhance their visuals – but few did it as well as The Goodies. So intrinsic is the show's music that it is impossible to imagine its absence – it isn't in the show, it's of the show. And yet, due to the production policies of the time, the source recordings were disposed of once the show itself was completed. Most of these reel-to-reel audio tapes were recycled for other productions, but five original session tapes have survived and are presented here as a unique artefact of the recording process used on this world-famous comedy series.

Written by Bill Oddie in partnership with Michael Gibbs and Dave MacRae, the series' specially-composed music was eclectic in scope and covered a wide range of styles and formats (including jingles and fake adverts). The sessions on this set feature some fan favourites – Dumb Animals, Berserk, Working the Line, Bonecrusher – as well as the only remaining element from the original version of Kitten Kong not to be included in the remake: the fake advert soundtrack for the meat/chocolate bar Universe ("So full of cow it almost moos...").

And not only that, you can also buy the two Pixley books that were included in the limited edition :
The Goodies Book of Criminal Recordings
The Goodies DVD File

I saw Tim Brooke-Taylor and Bill Oddie about 10 years ago, they both looked like they needed to lay off the wine and/or cheese and/or escorts, because their faces were very red and a heart attack from hypertension seeemed imminent. Alas! They are both still alive. I bet it's all the prostitutes.

Anyway, not to derail the thread, whenever I'm reminded of them I'm reminded that they're still alive and think "Gosh, how did that happen?".

I enjoyed the Goodies, although I find my memories of watching their show on repeat on VHS as a little kid kind of traumatic, if for anything else, confronting the loneliness of my childhood. And Rolf Harris's definitely-not-supposed-to-be-his-dick "third leg". It also took me until pretty much adulthood to watch the Goonies because I'd always watch about 10 minutes of it and couldn't figure out how Bill, Graeme and Tim fitted into a bunch of little kids ending up in a mineshaft or whatever. At least Operation Yewtree has confirmed (?) it wouldn't have ended in horrific child rape, so that's one good thing you can say about them!
