The biggest takeaway from John Bolton's departure should be Trump's inability to stabilise the natsec position. Palace intrigue fans should note that Bolton was originally considered for this job at the same time as HR McMaster, in the post-Flynn resignation rush.

Apparently the signature Bolton moustache sealed the deal for McMaster, despite Trump's distaste for first appearances due to his ill-fitting civvies. McMaster adhered to military code that prevents serving or recently retired servicemen from taking up Article II appointments and wearing uniform, without official congressional exception.

On the day Trump announced McMaster's appointment (following admitted and indicted criminal Michael Flynn's short tenure) everyone was surprised by the hasty decision.

Multiple sources indicate that Steve Bannon's suggestion that McMaster wear his military uniform, after previously failing to impress Trump at a hastily convened Bedminster NJ  meeting - was the clinching deal in him getting that thankless job.

I've been surprised by the varying hot takes from anti-Trump beltway insiders, in the wake of his departure - no one wanted Bolton in that job, but in light of Trump's impulsive and chaotic approach to foreign policy, his known hawkishness and his inherent opposition to some of Trump's worst instincts, was regarded by some as a reassuring though undesirable known known (to bastardize Rumsfeld.)

Bolton's biggest failing was arguably not on policy (where he was essentially ineffective) but on his ego-driven refusal to follow the hawkish Kissinger model that has come to define the NSA role and subsequent expectations.

The National Security Advisor has historically undertaken an administrative and managerial endeavour. Rather than pursuing personal policy objectives, he/she is expected to chair NSC principal gatherings, where everyone from the Secretary of State through Defense Secretary to Treasury Sec offers up opinions aimed at guiding executive policy.

The role was created to filter these various positions, via a White House-located conduit capable of offering coherent advice to the president. The appointed NSA (technically just another senior WH Counselor role) traditionally is supported by an experienced staff of non-political civil servants, who both shop policy positions and liase as needed with relevant staff at deputy or assistant level within the various executive branches in apolitical fashion.

Unlike previous office holders, John Bolton neither availed himself of the advice from nor convened useful regular meetings of the NSC. The latter body was established by law in 1947, to best coordinate the policies of the Secretary of State, secdef, Treasury, CIA and any other part of the executive relevant to national security at any given time.

Though Eisenhower created the National Security Advisor role, it became more prominent and influential during the Kennedy and Nixon presidencies. Subsequently office holders have had varying degrees of influence and prominence.

US viewers will probably know that MSNBC's Morning Mika's father (WW2 refugee Zbigniew Brzezinski) became the post-Kissinger model for National Security Advisor in the White House, serving for the entirety of Jimmy Carter's single term. Brzezinski was considered hawkish in the context of the era and the regime of Cyrus Vance, though both survived Carter's pre-1980 election cabinet sackings!

Previously Henry Kissinger held on to his influential NSA role which defined post 1968 Vietnam policy, even after Nixon elevated him to Secretary of State - though Gerald Ford put in Brent Scowcroft for the last two years of his presidency.

Bush 41 appointed Scowcroft again in the same role, for his entire 4 years. Though Scowcroft had strong ties to Kissinger (having served under him) he escaped any involvement in the Iran-Contra Reagan era scandal (though he also was appointed to notionally investigate that by Bush 41.)

Recently, the longest serving National Security Advisor was the eminently qualified Susan Rice, who held the office for the whole of Obama's second presidential term. Since Trump is neither inclined to endure such tenure nor take such qualified advice, I think the TV pundits who have joked about Mike Pompeo taking on both jobs are on to the best outcome of a bad situation.

Since there is no black letter law outlining the NSA role, there is no constitutional reason why Trump can't just dispense with it. The point of that job is to funnel national security advice via various relevant sources, into one carefully distilled coherent policy position for the president to consider.

If President Trump is not willing to engage with sage advice from such a source, he might as well just get his natsec advice from a toadying sycophant. Let us not forget that when Pompeo was a Kansas House Rep, he was an extreme budget, debt, deficit and foreign policy hawk of the tea party persuasion.

Since he has subsequently subjugated all his principles to Trump, I say let Pompeo take on as many jobs as possible - for the short-term gain will be richly rewarded by the painful intellectual conservative ass-fucking he will be subjected to, once the Republican party rediscovers decency, in the far-distant post-Trump future!

Of all the things you can criticise Trump for, normalizing relations to North Korea is probably the stupidest thing. Do these liberal hawks want an isolated NK? Maybe listen to the South Koreans, who avtually have to live there.
