The only thread results on Google are in an archaic format (https://www.cookdandbombd.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=521.40;wap2) so thought it best to start a new one.

Where to start, guys and girls?  Frankly a bit intimidated by the size and variety of his output to date.  Just the number of monikers alone....

Somehow only discovered this queasy belter made with a New Orleans jazz funeral band.

But beyond I See a Darkness, both versions, and maybe a Palace song or two, I am completely ignorant of Oldham's music.

What are your highlights, and what would you give to a naif friend as a way in?

I used to buy everything that the guy released to the point where I had 30+ albums and dozens of 7" singles. Then I realised that I hadn't listened to anything past the first 2 or 3 BPB LPs more than once and put loads up for sale on Discogs. Still like the Palace albums (and think that first album and the first two 7s are some of the best things he's done) but struggle to get excited about anything he releases nowadays. A friend played live with him and said he's a really nice guy which surprised me somewhat as I'd been led to believe he'd masturbated over a disabled Australian.

Best place to start is probably 'Days in the Wake' by Palace Brothers and 'I See A Darkness' (the album) by BPB. Both are pretty much perfect.

I highly recommend the compilation of Palace singles, "Lost Blues And Other Songs". I lost interest in him after "I See A Darkness" (which is also excellent, as someone else mentioned) so I don't know much about the later stuff but all of his Palace Brothers/Music records are great.

My favourite Will Oldham things:

The song "Will You Miss Me When I Burn".
Palace Music
The song "My Home Is The Sea" from Superwolf
Master and Everyone
Ease Down The Road (First 6-7 tracks)
Lost Blues and Other Songs
...Sings Palace Music (Nashville covers of his own songs - its brilliant).

I was at this last year. It was incredible. The whole gig on YouTube.

If there's a specific post on that page OP wanted to get to on that thread, you can also just get rid of the wap2.html bit as well.
