Big Brother 2018 (last series ever... on Channel 5)
« on: September 14, 2018, 12:35:07 PM »
So it’s all over, after rumours for a few years Channel 5 have confirmed that the new series of Big Brother will be the last on their channel https://twitter.com/channel5_tv/status/1040544477088108545?s=21

It starts tonight, they’re teasing it as the biggest game ever. Bringing back the social experiment element and only including actual civilians, instead of some reality show types that had been recruited in recent years.

It might be back, but it might not. So let’s sort of mourn.

Of course it'll be back. Some digital channel will pick it up.

Some of the celebrity editions Channel 5 did were up there with some of the classic Channel 4 series, but I gave up on the civilian version a few years ago. There was way too much meddling in the later series, and from what I've read, it seems like Endemol and Channel 5 butted heads a lot. Endemol wanted to stick more to the show's roots, whereas Channel 5 wanted to turn it more into a Geordie Shore/TOWIE type thing, and filled the casts with z-list celebs (even in the civilian version).

I'm not sure it will get picked up by a broadcaster. But could it survive online only?

In case you were in danger of viewing the Big Brother entity as anything other than Media Cunt Ground Zero, I just wanted to share this brilliant bit of hubris from the official book released after UK series 1:

Quote from: Big Brother: The Official Unseen Story
Bazal was a natural home for an innovative and experimental series, having pioneered shows like Changing Rooms, Ground Force and Ready, Steady, Cook

I used to love it up until they packed the house with opposing views and goaded them into fighting. It seemed to be a reaction to dull Cameron winning the previous year. O'Leary also changed on 'Little Brother' from presenting with his tongue firmly in his cheek to seemingly being a complete fanboy. I'd bailed before Russel Brand came on board.

I'll always remember the night when Helen and Stuart had their dinner date. It was the night my Dad died, although I don't think they were in any way to blame.

The best year was the one where the muscly jock looked like he was genuinely about to snap and murder someone for real. Obviously that was a highlight, but it was a great series in general with the young black guy constantly sniping from the sidelines and basically providing an alternative commentary where he shithoused the character and behaviour of everyone in the house.

Rewatching some highlights of that series now, it was incredible. You had Ahmed the Muslim who enjoyed the army task so much he got PTSD and started smashing plates up, Stu and his terrifying girlfriend, Marco the walking advert for homophobia, Dan the walking advert for gayness being the best thing ever, Jason and Victor the sniping psychopaths and Nadia the transexual who was the most normal one in there by an absolute mile, and struggled because of it. Great entertainment.

Yeah, BB5 was probably the best, or closely tied with BB3 (the one with Kate, Alex, and Jade Goody). Victor is my all-time favourite housemate. I still remember watching the late night live feed of "fight night" which kept cutting in and out of live footage and still images, though the sound of utter chaos could still be heard.

Which year was the one with Kemal? That was the game-changer for me - it was great, but it was also the beginning of the end as the first one to feature almost exclusively fame-hungry nutters. The likes of Kemal, Science and Derek were all great fun, but the producers realised that there was value in getting 'characters', starting the slope towards the fake drama nonsense we presumably still get today, though I haven't watched in maybe a decade because it quickly went to absolute shit. I think I gave up the year that the creepy couple that looked like Sylvester Stallone and Chyna were in it.

Big Brother 6 had Kemal and that lot. I met Derek in a Sainsbury's a couple of years ago, approached him with the awful line, "I don't mean to be rude, but were you in Big Brother?" but he was very nice.

BB5, 6, 7 and 9 were all my favourites. BB14 got pretty addictive for me as well. Last year's series had a good bunch.

BB14 was the one with Gina? I think that is the only C5 civilian series I watched all the way to the end. That was pretty good yeah.

Yeah, Gina and Dexter. I remember the Daley/Hazel situation seeming very dramatic at the time.

This, the Nasty Nick Showdown, and "Be careful Sandy!" will be all I remember of Big Brother.

Remember Big Brother 1 when they had to promise to donate to Shelter to persuade people to vote?

Downhill after 5. 4 was good until they fucked it with the double eviction and kicked out the best two housemates.

I'm A Celebrity makes me nostalgic for the earlier series of Big Brother, the way it (for the most part) doesn't contrive drama and just allows the unusual setting and natural entertainment value of human beings interacting to provide good viewing.

If you'd told me a month ago that I would voluntarily watch an episode of CBB, I probably would have spat in your face. But in fairness I do admit I sat through two when the controversy flared up this year. I will also admit I found the clip of the whole 'David's dead' scenario absolutely hilarious a couple of years ago. Prior to that the last time I remember watching was with Brian/The Twins/Pete/Nicky/Glyn/Imogen (I might be conflating two series here?), some vague memory of Grace chucking a glass of water as she was evicted, and the bad racism.

Edit: Actually the bad racism was CBB wasn't it, and I generally only watched the civilian ones. I'm thinking of the girl who was removed early on for saying the N-word.

Thank you, I had forgotten about this and just watched it again. It is absolutely fucking amazing. I love the fact she thought that BB had just left David dead in the bedroom.

The Bowie/Gest misunderstanding was epic.
This popped up on my Twitter feed. It's Heroine Junkie: Jacqualine McCafferty's* BB audition tape. :) :) :)  It would be amazing if she turned up tonight. :)

Decided to watch seeing as it might be the last ever. It feels kinda old school so far with them arriving in cars, plus no silly ear-piece task which they seem to do every launch night. Also that 18 year old is clearly young Alan Partridge.

Loved Big Brother until about 2006. Can't believe it's been 12 years since I watched it. Along with Naked Attraction, my heart sinks when I see it on the TV guide. Just seems impossible that it's still on television.

Can't comment on the quality of Big Brother since I stopped watching but admit that I have immensely fond memories of being a student, up all night watching it. All summer, just obsessing over a group of housemates and really investing in it all; being excited to watch the highlights and coming on here to talk about it all.

All good things come to an end though; I no longer have the interest or time to invest but it has been responsible for some amazing television. Ah well.

The coin twist would make for quite a good concept for a whole other show.

Obviously those tweets are utterly repellent - but I couldn't help be amazed at how people are now combing through the racist Twitter feed of some idiot who hasn't even had time to become famous yet. I mean, somebody like Sam Hyde's a fucking cunt, but at least we've heard of him and are familiar with his deeply unfunny comedy. This is literally nobody that's just appeared on a telly show earlier this evening. They're clearly a terrible person, but, well... this is all getting out of hand a bit, isn't it?

Ellis has been removed for those old twitter posts. So much for the “extensive vetting”.

This actually seems like an interesting bunch anyway.
