Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

People on here haven't paid much attention to Call of Duty for years, but I still buy and play them pretty regularly, mostly for Zombies.

Black Ops 4 had a huge controversy over its pricing model - it's getting rid of  the single player campaign, and there was some fuss over the season pass, can't remember much about that, but people are really ready for cunts like Activision to get rid of stuff that splits up communities.

Anyway, the beta for their BR mode - Blackout - seems to be getting incredibly positive reception. It's the by now standard PUBG model of last man standing on a big map.

It looks great, I'd preorder it for a go but cancelling is such a pain in the arse on Xbox. You glide in on a wingsuit, then gather gear and try to make it to the end.

One thing that's weird is they actually seem to have increased the historically low time to kill needed for COD games. I'm in favour of that - in PUBG and classic CoD, it mostly comes down to who sees the other first, you almost never have a chance to respond and turn the tides.

Anyway, anyone looking forward to this, and anyone thinking about checking out the CoD franchise again because of it? Watching a stream now, it looks like a 60fps PUBG with none of the unfortunate amateurish bullshit that game is sadly hampered by.

It's kind of pitiful that call of duty black ops with its twisty turn film level plots and top level voice actors has been reduced to a nothibg but a zombies mode and a pubg rip off. The absolutely epitome of everything that's wrong with gaming in 2018, chasing the mega pay day at the expense of any kind of integrity or coherent game.

Barry Admin

Sounds great to me, to be honest. As well as Zombies and the PUBG ripoff, there'll also of course be Multiplayer, which is the actual heart of CoD for most people still. And it's Treyarch, the original inventors of Zombies, so calling it "a zombies mode" in that dismissive way completely misses just how popular the mode actually is. It could easily be sold seperately, most fans would be delighted to see that happen.

So as it is you get three comprehensive multiplayer-based game types for the price of one game, awesome.

They've been trading off the "three games for one" thing for years now, and I'll get much more value for money with a PUBG mode than I would with some 4-hour campaign. Did you even play the BLOPS 3 campaign? Complete and utter cancer AIDS.

brat-sampson

Long term I can't see a $60 BR mode beating out Fortnite, which is free.

I have no interest in the CoD franchise in general, nor BR games at all really, but that's my 2c.

madhair60

I tend to enjoy CoD campaigns - even the cancer AIDS ones - so I'm a little bit sad about Blops4. That said, fucking whatever it's CoD. It will obviously be brilliant.

Barry Admin

The Zombies trailer is fucking amazing. https://youtu.be/g8BN-Gu_IVk

Treyarch Zombies is always amazing anyway. I just wish they'd fuck off with the PlayStation exclusivity! They still get the maps a month before us Xbox plebs, which means the Easter eggs are all solved by the time we actually get them.

Still though, I've GOT to get this. That trailer got me so hyped! I never thought I'd be someone who bought a yearly franchise, but CoD is almost always worth it, and Treyarch do an amazing job these days.

Three weeks, I seriously can't wait!

Barry Admin

Sod you all for not caring! It's launch day, and I'm hyped like a kid on Xmas morning!

bgmnts

I'm genuinely amazed people are stiil buying into this.

Barry Admin

I dunno if you mean the Battle Royale mode, or CoD in general. Regardless, it was the most viewed game on Twitch last night, and is surely going to smash yet more sales records.

Neomod

I think I played an early COD when you could rent them from Lovefilm. Far too frenetic for me. I prefer something a bit more measured. Same goes for Overwatch having seen Limmy play it I didn't have a clue what was going on. The BR to this looks pretty good but as has been said it won't usurp Fortnite.

Barry Admin

I've barely had a chance to play this all day due to people pestering me, but it seems great craic. More diferent than I'd expected really, which is odd, for CoD. Zombies seems amazing, multiplayer has a slower TTK which means you have to have better aim or stay grouped up. Haven't tried Blackout yet. It's a bit overwhelming in terms of the new modes and specialist changes and whatever else, which is good.

The presentation is much better than it's been for a few years, not as garish and neon as Blops 3, and the cutscenes are all superb.

I just need to sit and really get to grips with it. It feels smooth and fast, as usual.

In seriously tempted by this. Haven't played COD since 2003.

Barry Admin

Well I just had a go at Blackout, and it's the tits. Seems to shit all over PUBG (and Fortnite obviously.) I mean, same base gameplay as PUBG, but with 60fps and CoD handling. Can't wait till I'm less tired, so I can stick the headset on and be a total tryhard.

Barry Admin

Ahhh you can actually hit a controller button to get a kill cam too, very good! Because I've the audio down listening for Jelly, some little pistol bitch just soundwhored me, great to actually be able to watch it and see what happened. The action is seamless, I found a big old truck, drove it for a bit and honked my horn, then went a wee swim through the water. It's a total PUBG rip down to supply drops and everything. I LOVE IT!

The Culture Bunker

Call of Duty: Black Ops III came up on PS+ the other month and I lasted about two hours in the single-player mode before deleting it. I assumed it was mainly a mulitiplayer thing these days, hence not targeted at saps like me.

Barry Admin

Oh wow, you can stick attachments straight on your gun instead of sending them to the backpack. This is so well thought out, and there's short-lived perks you can pick up too. They've done an amazing job on this.

Edit: lmao I just tried Quads instead of Solo, I died about 10 seconds after I hit the ground, no kidding. It was really fucking intense.

The wingsuit feels sooooo goooood, I was enjoying playing PUBG again of late, but I'm not sure I could go back now.

Barry Admin

I just love this, multiplayer feels awesome too, best Black Ops ever I'm thinking. I do miss all the jump kits and stuff that made it more like Quake, but what the hell, boots on the ground is fun too. I wanna go out and do stuff today, but there's so much of this I've not seen yet, I don't even know the map rotation and have barely touched Zombies.

OK, now you have my attention. One of the things that put me off the CoD series was when they tried to copy Titanfall, what was the game where they kept going on and on about 'verticality' like it was something they invented? Advanced Warfare? I hated all that exosuit and hi tech gadget crap, they were always better as boots on the ground games. I think Blops 2 was the last entry I played. When it came to fun, enjoyable, fun, fast and fun FPS games Titanfall pissed all over CoD from a great height. This does sound interesting though, I'll have to check out a few streams.

Barry Admin

Yeah check it out, it looks a lot better than recent versions too, there's a bit more grit to it that I really like. It feels a bit more tactical too, with TDM down to 5 a side, so it does benefit you to stay with your team more, given the higher health and higher TTK.

This game is like a Blops 3 prequel, so it's while the specialists were being recruited and before they got all the futuristic kit. One of them's got a grapple gun, but you can only use that every few minutes.

Can't wait to get the bloody sniper rifles and shotguns unlocked.

Barry Admin

#19
#16 in Blackout, not played it much as I've been getting my stuff unlocked in Multiplayer, but jeez it's good. Had the old PUBG sensations there, my heart was pounding as I listened to footsteps and skulked about. Finally someone crept up behind my hiding spot and I jumped out of my fucking skin.

I don't see how Battlefield will be able to compete with this come November. It's an absolutely genius move by Treyarch, and should effectively kill off the Battle Royale genre by completely dominating its competitors.

One problem is that people are using the third person emotes to peek, but a patch is already on the way.

Edit: #14, wanted to get top 15 for the points. Jesus Christ this is fucking brilliant. Even just the whole way it's been thought out - I was way behind the circle the whole match there, but could spam health packs as I ran, without missing a beat, and eventually gained on the circle. Then you can also quick use perks and stuff while running too. And the gunplay is obviously top notch, hit markers so you know when you're on target and all that. You can loot players without having to sit in a fucking menu screen! They do all they can to make sure you're kept in the action at all times, rather than dicking about in menus.

It sounds wicked. I just realised that I shitcanned PS+ though because I never play anything online on it these days and the games are absolutely shit. Hmm...I don't think I can justify forty quid a year on top of the sixty or whatever for the game, just for this game. Hmm...RDR2, as well, maybe...Hmm.

Probably two beers and I'll be on it.

LanceUppercut

No campaign mode, means a definite no buy from me, cheeky fuckers selling a game for 50 quid that is just a bunch of online games, and no campaign.

I have always enjoyed the campaign's in all the COD games, I love completing them all on veteran, I really hope this isn't the way that games are going!!

Barry Admin

Well worth it for me to have the definitive BR experiment this year. I don't get that kind of intense adrenaline rush from any other type of game I can think of. Much better than a shitty 6-hour campaign.

Bosto: yeah get it, get it, get it.

Barry Admin

Ahhh just had one of those rounds in multiplayer. Got a few kills with my trip mines, which led to my care package streak, then managed to stay alive to call in my attack chopper, which racked up another ten kills for me while my dog also savaged the enemy team. It was beautiful.

Thursday

I'd almost be tempted by this if they made the Battle Royale mode free to play or maybe even just sold it separately for a 3rd of the price or something. As it is I never tried PUBG. Gave Fortnite a go, but was instantly turned off by the crafting. I would like to have a decent go at a Battle Royale game, but it doesn't seem like it'll pan out... and I don't think a Battle Royale mode would work in Destiny.

Barry Admin

People keep saying that about wishing it was free, but PUBG isn't, in fact it now also charges you a stupid monthly pass as well. I'm sure there will be free to play weekends though.

The Zombies maps - or "experiences" as they keep calling them now - are absolutely excellent. Still my favourite and the heart of the series for me, even above Multiplayer. I can't quite get into my groove with multiplayer yet this year, but Zombies usually sharpens up my shooting skills again.

Barry Admin

They just got the feel really bang on with this one. It's taking fucking ages to rank up, and I can't wait for the first double XP event so I can try some other guns, but yeah, the guns all sound really great as the bullets this into people. I'm enjoying the toned down nature of the specialists too, although that'll change when supply drops come in, and the more realistic feel will give way to people running round with swords and baseball bats.

Barry Admin

Finding my groove now! Given up on mid to long range engagements with assault rifles for meantime, and went back to classic run and gun style. Lightweight for faster movement, dead silence for quiet footsteps, get in close and melt them with a rapid-fire SMG before they have a chance to respond, BRAAAAAAPPPPP.

lazarou

Just wanted to chime in and basically agree with a lot of what Barry's saying here. It's a fantastic entry in the series, first impressions are that the multiplayer might be the best it's ever been.

It just feels so slick and fast and surprisingly well-balanced, and the tweaks to time-to-kill and return to boots-on-the-ground gameplay make for a less twitchy, more tactical experience. I mean it's not exactly rainbow six, but the changes still really give the gameplay room to breathe. Frankly my reflexes just aren't fast enough anymore for what latter-day COD ended up becoming, so the change in approach is very welcome here.

I like the new operators, the fictional guns all feel beautifully chunky and satisfying to use, even the interface is nice and clean for the most part. Also appreciate the improved visual feedback that always makes it clear where fire is coming from, which of your teammates are in trouble and how well your shots are landing. It looks like when they made those claims that they were ditching the campaign to really put some extra effort into the MP, they actually followed through on it.

Speaking as another PUBG survivor, yeah, I just don't see myself ever going back after this. It's just so much more polished and feels incredibly satisfying to play. Beyond the massively better performance, movement and weapon handling, everything from the load times on ensures you're never more than a minute from diving out of another chopper, and in a game where your time on the ground can sometimes be measured in seconds (if you're shite like me), that's actually kind of a big deal.

Barely even touched zombies yet, but from a couple of brief plays it feels good as ever. We'll see how that holds up when I need a break from the other modes, which might actually take quite a while at this rate.

I'm not a huge COD fan and was only ever really a casual player at best, but I can't get over how good this is. I'd highly recommend it.

Barry Admin

Great to hear from someone else who is enjoying the game! It really is a belter, slick and smooth as ever, thanks to ye olde Quake code still embedded in there. I know people are snobby about CoD these days, but it does what it sets out to do brilliantly, and Treyarch always do a fantastic job.

The new objective game modes are great too, Capture is a lot of fun when you're bored of TDM, and Heist seems cracking, still have to explore it properly. Limited respawns and then cash to buy equipment at the start of each round.

I'm looking forward to party games and stuff coming back. Usually I end up playing a lot of Hardcore (Kill Confirmed) too, when I want a slower, more tactical and campy playstyle. Not touched the sniper rifles yet either, and I normally like to diamond those.
