Yeah there's a lot of stuff there, maybe some of it will come in useful as you progress.

Load IX, run round the edge of the arena and pick up the challenge banner when prompted, and do those challenges which make stuff appear in the plinth. Also ring the 4 gongs in each map section, kill the mini bosses and pick up their heads. Take them to the central underground area and place them on spikes to open pack a punch. Once you can do that every match, start building the shield too, and then start to build the wonder weapon. You WILL have to google or YouTube for help on all Zombies maps, it's fine.

MP, just keep playing and get a feel for where people are funnelled to, and don't sprint all the time as you ADS out of it slower. I do anyway as I'm a maniac (and use Gung-ho), then hipfire and start to ADS at the same time. I love Dead Silence so they can't hear me coming. Assists count as kills now, so try and get a few bullets in even if you're outnumbered. Take UAVs and CUAVs down immediately with your launcher. Use your engineer ability to see where the campers are holed up with razor wire etc.

The guns have specific perks this year, and some of them are awesome. So there's operator mods and then stuff like Grip II on the ICR which has extra effects. Eg that makes you flinch less when shot. Rank the guns up and experiment with those abilities, find the ones that suit your play style. I think assault rifles are still king, ICR, Vapr and Maddox are very good, SMG's have been a bit underpowered this year, sadly. Don't use Long Barrell II as I think it's still broken and only marginally effective.

Get a sense of when the spawns flip - when you guys move far enough into the map, the spawns flip and the enemy will all spawn behind you, so turn around to stop yourself from getting shot in the back.

Again, acoustic sensor, seriously.

I just love it this year. There's a lot less corner camping and head glitching and such, really nice pace. Oh yeah, head glitching is CoD cover, so it's like a barrel for instance where only your head shows but you can still shoot over it, try and move behind these bits of partial cover as you traverse a map, and always move in such a way that your gun is aimed at the nearest doorway or window. It's just a fundamental thing that people often forget, but keep your potential target centered at all times like that. And heal before reloading! I still mess that up as it's so ingrained to reload a clip right after an engagement.

I'm looking forward to hearing your experiences with Zombies.

madhair60

Had a game of zombies, got to round 16. I wasn't entirely sure what I was doing but ended up coming 2nd anyway, somehow. I'll definitely go back to it, it's great. Smooth and satisfying. I think I ranked up 5 times in that one match, ended up unlocking Swordfish. Played a bit of MP too, got my Tier Skip (whatever that means, idk). Still having fun. Can't go into much detail because I'm still very much lost. :p

madhair60

My current frustration is that it seems people simply have better guns than me, which is jarring. I don't really know what I'm looking for yet.

Is the Black Ops Pass worth buying? It's affordable for me at the moment but I don't want it if it's just a Fortnite-style monthly thing. Is the pass a full season pass for the game's lifetime?

Barry Admin

I'd encourage you to try solo Zombies as it's such fun, and you can take your time exploring and learning the map and looking for parts. The pass is apparently just the season pass renamed, and with a focus now on releasing smaller more regular drops of content throughout the year. I always buy Treyarchs passes for the Zombies maps, so yeah, absolutely worth it to me, no doubt.

I'd imagine there will be double weapon xp soon to help you rank up your guns. The attachments do make a real difference, and will be on the gun even if you pull it from the mystery box.

The pass usually gets you 4 Zombies maps and 12 Multiplayer maps, so I'd expect that to continue, and they're giving Blackout characters now too. Again, day 1 purchase for me because Treyarch Zombies is GOAT.

madhair60

I just got paid for a couple of months' writing - eyyy! - so I will be buying the pass. Fuck it.

Deeply thick question - how do I actually launch Zombies in solo? I genuinely couldn't figure it out. This is the depth of the retardation you're having to deal with.

Barry Admin

Congrats! Another reason it's worth getting the pass is that Black Ops games have a lifetime/active player base far beyond their one year in the spotlight.

To get a solo game click above where it says "public match" in the bottom right, "select map/mode." Then tab over to classic, choose difficulty and map. Hardcore and realistic give more XP, normal is a good balance, casual has Easter egg stuff turned off so I wouldn't bother with it.

You can do the tutorial there, and the new Rush mode. I haven't played the latter much but it does seem pretty fun and intense.

Make sure you also check out the MP "featured playlists", as they change every week to add new temporary modes, and some of them are great fun.

Barry Admin

There you go, that's double xp and double weapons xp on now for the weekend, get ranked up!

Btw in maps where the mystery box moves, looks into the sky for the shaft of light to locate it.

Barry Admin

Events typically end at 6pm on Monday. I'm grinding out weapon levels and camps in Zombies by using Deadshot Dealer as a perk, then using unlocked guns to do as many headshots as possible in IX.

Also did a bit of Rush to quickly rank up my shottie after I prestiged it. It's definitely quite fun, must try it online. Should play online a lot more really, just kind of prefer solo Zombies for the most part.

Although I've been pushing the IX map which is part of the new storyline, definitely try the classic ones too and get playing as Richtofen. He's one of my favourite characters in all of popular culture, absolutely hilariously fantastic.

It's crazy how many Easter eggs there are on each map. I'm just playing Classified again, having not played Five that much - this was the original Blops 1 version where you could play as JFK, Castro etc. Always seemed like kind of a small map, but more expansive than I realised, and so many eggs and things you can do. It really does take ages to fully get to grips with each map, I never usually get around to actually "finishing" them.

I realise now how a lot of my info might have been no use, as Zombies is utterly bewildering at the start. Maybe stick a headset on, and hope to get into some good parties who will guide you on Easter egg stuff early on, plus general tactics such as using elixirs, avoiding nukes, how to use your special weapons etc.

They've done a great job at streamlining this one too to remove the micromanagement. For instance you no longer have to bother reloading before picking up a Max Ammo, you get a full clip anyway.

Anyway, as it's a remake of one of the first maps, Classified is relatively less complex and might be fun to learn on, but for easiness, IX can't really be beat currently.

And yeah Richtofen. Always Richtofen, zank yoo.

Edit: Another fundamental I keep meaning to say... if you get something like a Double Points dropping at the end of a round, leave it until it blinks rapidly, then pick it up at the last second so you have it for the start of the next round. Then find windows to rebuild while waiting for the spawns. Little things like that help you build points and get set up early. I've only recently started using Temporal Gift to maximise these drops. Again, there's a LOT of possible strategies in the game, and a lot of things you can integrate in your gameplay style, so just build up gradually and see what works for you and what you enjoy doing, then build your class around that.

And there's a Quake-style bunnyhop you can do by sort of sprinting, Jong and then duck jumping as you land. Makes getting around more fun. There can be a LOT of running around, which is another great reason to take StaminUp as a perk choice

madhair60

I can't figure out how to choose my character in Zombies, which is a bit annoying. I've enjoyed it solo so far but it IS daunting.

Barry Admin

Just leave and rejoin, there's never been character selection, but at least now you can see who you get before the game starts, and stick with them by not leaving the lobby after in solo. Keep going, it's well worth it. Just remember to work on training them, and getting pack a punch open no matter what map it is should be a priority, and also getting perks, with Dying Wish at a minimum as it'll save you going down. Integrate special weapons into play and remember that they can save you when surrounded, and keep "anywhere but here" bound to the same direction pad button. Then look up shield parts and get your shield built, and work from there towards other Easter eggs like wonder weapons and upgraded shields etc. Give us a shout in here if you need help with anything.

madhair60

I'm spending most of my time in Multi and playing Blackout for my Tier Skip - it's pretty easy to get one kill :p. Got one the other night soaring around on a quad bike, which cracked me up. Someone trying to snipe me and I just clipped them at full speed. Classic.

I find the easter egg stuff for zombies a little bit exhausting, I would prefer the core gameplay without having to worry about it but I expect that's just me being new to it and overwhelmed.

I still think there's nuance I'm missing in Multi. I can feel myself getting better, but I swear people are simply faster at killing than me. It sometimes feels like I can empty a clip and watch the enemy run away.

Silly question, are there modes that have enemies not flagged? Last night for whatever reason enemies didn't have the red health bar above them anymore. Have I accidentally switched them off? I kept shooting at teammates (no friendly fire thank fuck) because they were decked out in red.

I'm such a noob.

madhair60

Razed cunts in Multi last night. Doing better in Blackout too. A bit. Somewhat. I love the initial mad scramble for guns. I got capped due to failure of spatial awareness and I won't be caught the same way again. Remember where the windows are!

Barry Admin

That's great you're having fun, I think MP makes more sense when you just click with the speed of it, and adjust to the pace. I think "Cold Blooded" perk removes the name tags in this iteration, it usually does. Regards friendly fire, Hardcore mode has that on, plus a lot more changes ... I find it fun for a change at times.

Yeah try not to worry too much about Easter egg stuff in Zombies, just do what's fun, and you know there's a load of extra stuff there to learn if you enjoy a map. A lot of them do follow similar mechanics too, so they start making more sense the more of them you see. You can also just set your own challenges and play style and have a lot of fun like that, such as staying in the starting room and seeing how many waves you can survive without opening any doors. Sometimes maps have camping spots, I think this year it's the elevator in Classified and the stairs in the wardens house in Blood of the Dead. Nuketown Zombies may bring back a camping spot too.

I spent the last few days just playing Classified a lot and doing the Easter egg in that, great map, but reasonably tough as it's fairly narrow corridors.

I'm at 18 days played on this already, Jesus fuck. Love it though, very addicted to Zombies again at the minute, about to hit 4th Prestige, and really just start doing some online games.

Barry Admin

Hardcore is a very good mode for a lot of the camo challenges btw. This year I've mostly stuck to Core TDM, but sometimes in the past I've been really addicted to Hardcore Kill Confirmed.

Just had a game of Blackout to finish a tier, and found the Bowie Knife and gem needed to unlock Diego, as long as you get a Bowie Knife kill. So I sat and camped in a little shed for a few minutes, used Engineer to see vehicles coming, stuck my headset on to soundwhore. Eventually some activity happens in the next building, so I stalk out crouching with the Skulker perk and manage to surprise some guy. He starts shooting and gets me down to 50 health, but I got the kill and the character unlock... heart absolutely pounding!

madhair60

Barry Admin

For characters like Diego? I realise after I should have said about that; when you pick up a weird item in Blackout, like the scarf or whatever, press start to go into your inventory screen, and hover over it. It will display the character unlock conditions over at the right of the screen. Most of them require you to get a kill in some certain way, and then keep that specific item with you until you die. Some of them seem crazy, but definitely a fun challenge, and gives you something different to do for that game.

There's a full list of all the character unlock challenges on the web too, might help to become vaguely familiar with the list of items, but you'll generally know them when you see them. They seem to be in supply drops, and those ofd containers that have a good lot of stuff in them. Or you can loot them from people you've killed or find.

Dug out Blops 3 today for some Zombies Chronicles action later on! Should really jump on multiplayer and finish my diamond shotguns too.

madhair60

I'm starting to get salty with Multiplayer - I unload on an enemy and they don't drop, but a shot from them seems to do me in. I'm so fucking shit. But I'm getting better

robotam

Just play hardcore. One hit one kill. I've still only played one match of zombies and am in the single digits for fortnite mode games. But multiplayer was worth it for me. Still play a few matches most nights.

The only thing that puts me off it is the announcer. Wee fucker shouts at you every time yous lose a round. Even if you are first in your team he ponders if you are the weakest link. Wish you could kill that ann Robinson wannabe cunt.

madhair60

Getting even better. Last couple of days my K/D has gotten a lot less ugly. I've switched up and tried several Specialists but stick with Prophet for now as his special is basically broken. Played a bit of split screen too and loved it.

Barry Admin

I'm still in a Zombies binge, dug out Blops 1 last night but I'm having problems with the disc today. It's soooo much harder too, I love it. Was straight into a MP match on Blops 3 with no waiting the other night, and discovered I'm tenth prestige on Zombies there, so gonna tip that over to Prestige Master, at last. I've got 38 days played on that game! Only a couple of challenges left to get 100% completion for Zombies too, although one of them is for reviving people online, so not sure if I'll bother.

Anyway yeah, glad to see you're still having so much fun with CoD madhair, you too robotam. Much maligned but rarely bettered. New Zombies mode coming soon, hopefully you do stick with it as a survival game and don't worry about all the shitty Easter egg stuff. Rush is really fun for arcade style action.

BTW I'M ON DER RIESE https://youtu.be/2Nvamnma_Aw

Fucking amazing.

madhair60

The fact that this game supports split-screen in every mode is downright laudable.

madhair60

Still loving this and getting better. Have gone from last/second-last in every fucking game to second/third. Appreciably improved, which is a great feeling. Still barely touch Zombies outside of split-screen, I like it a lot but whenever I stick this on I beeline for Multi, TD/Kill Confirmed moshpit. I like Heist too, but every other mode is less interesting to me. They seem to have fucked up the spawns a bit, lately, too.

Barry Admin

You should definitely try Zombies Rush mode, I love sticking that on in solo, and I'd imagine it's much, much better in split-screen. It's just manic action, no buildables or Easter eggs, just build your multiplier and survive.

I should really get back into MP, hardly touched it since the new operation started. The new Blackout modes are gonna be great, too, but my Zombies obsession is stil crazy again currently.

madhair60

Fuckin double double at the weekend. Spent my Pass points on this Castlevania shit, now my gun's got a skull on it. £35 well spent.

15 more levels to prestige.

Barry Admin

Is that the vampire skin for the VAPR? Does look good. I spent the last of my few coins on the Valhalla shit for the Paladin, although I've not even done much sniping yet, but usually I like to diamond the snipers. I'm back into Multiplayer myself, glad to see new tiers with the Kap 40 back, I'll be getting that.

Still my most played game in ages by far, apart from Ingress. Love it to bits.

BeardFaceMan

Whats the shelf life on these games now theyre a yearly thing? Does the multiplayer game die when the next game comes out and everyone moves on or do they stay populated for a while?

In my experience they stay populated. I picked up Advanced Warfare (2014) last year pre-owned and had no problem getting games.

Barry Admin

Yeah and Black Ops games are particularly popular. I was straight into a Blops 3 MP match a week or two ago with no waiting at all.

Barry Admin

Glad to see Safeguard and Gun Game back in the rotation. Just had a brilliantly contested game of the former which went to double overtime, very intense, I ended up with 37 kills and a blood red reactive camo, lovely. Playing more Blackout too, gonna start jumping into quads and stuff and see how that goes, rather than just solo. Regards longevity, Blackout alone will keep this CoD going for years.
