Cringe Corner

I thought I'd trial a little thread where it's embarrassing interviews and TV appearances or whatever that are either notorious or really obscure, and the person being interviewed/appearing on TV is behaving strangely or just generally being a bit of a cunt in a way that is cringeworthy and/or entertaining. I love watching shit like this and absorbing the second hand emarrassment. Makes me feel alive.

Shit Good Nose

There's a fist chewingly unwatchable interview with Jorma Kaukonen that pops up on YouTube every now and again but always gets quickly taken down (it's not on there at the moment).  It's from some American morning show in the mid to late 80s and I don't know if he was off his tits on drugs or mega drunk or both, but his eyes are glazed over throughout the entire interview, he slurs the few answers that he actually manages to get out, and finishes the show off absolutely murdering Embryonic Journey.

Also, someone somewhere must have the footage of Syd Barrett on the Pat Boone show.  Everyone goes on about the American Bandstand appearance, but it's not that bad.

I've posted it here before, but this clip is never far from my thoughts:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXHatWRE2w4

A George Carlin impersonator who's bizarrely been hired to make an appearance at some kind of data company conference, doing the "Place For My Stuff" routine almost verbatim but substituting the word "Stuff" for "Data".  He gives it his best shot, but watching the realization dawn on him that the two words really aren't interchangeable and that it makes absolutely no sense, as well as the audience's unanimously nonplussed response, is beautifully painful.

I think since the uploader of that clip is the guy in question, the cringey bit has been rather haphazardly edited out.

When it comes to cringing, there's only one man, er, puppet you need on your screen.

I return to this video every six months or so. The tension of a routine completely and unquestionably failing has me gripped. Somebody laugh politely and put the man out of his misery.

Jesus Christ that's a hostage situation.

holdover

I keep checking youtube to see if anyone has uploaded he magnificent clip of Andrew Collins absolutely spangled at Glastonbury. He was one of the hosts of the telly coverage that year and at one point was so out of it he was just grunting and looking lost. It looked like he was tripping.

Avril Lavigne

I really enjoy this Oliver Reed appearance on Letterman.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPXMHZ4XEs0

He seems sober enough but keeps veering wildly back and forth between being playfully goofy/surreal and straight-up pissed off.  I've never seen Letterman so afraid of a guest as he is by the end of this clip.

I'm very sad the infamous Tom Waits vs Ian Hislop clip appears to've vanished from circulation. Although I've always felt Hislop over-played how angry Waits actually was whenever he told that story, in the actual clip he just seemed really tired and grumpy. It was more awkward than anything else.

Ian Brown and John 'Motormouth' Squire star in THE LONGEST QUARTER OF AN HOUR OF YOUR LIFE

Iggy Pop being a wazzock in the OP and John Lydon on the Dick Cavett show (my nomination for the nes plus ultra of awkward interviews, possibly too well worn for this thread but have it again anyway - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky6_cUn-454&index=64&list=PLS6eS2M7j6ABj0KWzF-KU_ttmsf0Jg3IU&frags=pl%2Cwn) are at least entertaining in their arrogance. These two dreary pillocks aren't cocking a snook at the straight world, they're just a pair of boring bastards with nothing to say. As this clip progresses the boredom becomes almost delicious.

Never understood why Brown (and Squire) did all the interviews when the other two are far more funny and likeable. I guess they wanted to come across as moody.

Awful interviewer though, she doesn't try and bounce off anything they say, Ian in fairness gives it a try and seems to appreciate she's having a bit of a time. Dreadfully reliant on set questions and unable to gauge how things are going and think on her feet. Let's be honest, if that was done today the interviewer, whoever it was, even if it was fucking Lauren Laverne (Mark E Smith anyone) would have got something out of them.

I knew which single fella that was before I even clicked. On the date afterwards the woman was trying her hardest not to enjoy it and shooting evil glares at him, even though she left her light on for him. I just felt a bit sorry for him.
