This Country: Autumn Special

Blue Jam

Just confirmed: streaming on BBC3 from 10am on the 10th of October, then on BBC1 a week later:

QuoteThis one-off special investigates the fallout from Kerry's criminality.

During the second series, Kerry's trusting nature was taken advantage of and she became embroiled in a criminal enterprise with her devious father, Martin. As the police's net tightened around the Mucklowes, Kerry was left with a direct choice: save her father or save herself.

Eight months on, the crew returns to the Cotswolds to investigate what has happened to both the Mucklowe family and the village community as a whole.

Eight months on? Someone's been in chokey... but is it Kerry or Martin...

There's a preview screening in London on Wednesday the 3rd- anyone get a ticket?

Pseudopath

Just in case you haven't already seen it...here's Romesh Ranganathan talking to Daisy May and Charlie Cooper. What happens next will make you piss your pants: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-eH2aGQnrA

Blue Jam

Oh yes- Daisy May Cooper, the exotic dancer in a ballgown with fruit on her head, bless...

Series 1 and 2 DVD boxset out on the 22nd of October:

I love the bit at the start where they both immediately agree in unison that their mum prefers Charlie. Perfectly timed.

amnesiac

yes I loved that RR interview with them but it really tested my knowledge of UK garage, i.e. I can't remember Damage. The 'reveal' in that clip is BRILLIANT. When I found that vid I went off and watched the others which are all pretty good, even the one with Rachel Paris!

Blue Jam

I thought Damage were a boyband who predated UK Garridge innit...

I love this deleted scene:

"CRISPS!"

Also the one where Kurtan is listing the nicknames of all the fish: "Shit-Eyes"

shh

Lovely to hear. An Autumn special could work better than the usual xmas one given rural context - village harvest festival maybe?

Blue Jam

There's a trailer out, but the only link I can find is this one to a post in "The Dump Gang" fan group on Facebook:

https://m.facebook.com/groups/508998406168139?view=permalink&id=661888074212504

Essentially: There's a trial over Dysongate, the BBC cover it, and Kurtan's main concern is the court artist having made him look like a ghoul.

It must have been Martin who went to prison, surely? Kerry would never have survived... maybe there's a third option and no-one went to prison because Martin is such a sneaky fucker...

Blue Jam

Trailer for This Country: The Aftermath now up on BBC3's Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/bbcthree/videos/887821241406840/

No cast details yet apart from the mysterious "Marvin (sic) Mucklowe":

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8364586/?ref_=ttep_ep1

Utter Shit

Not going to watch that as it's so close to airing I'd rather just see the thing in full, can't bloody wait though. Did you see the trailers that were going around? Not sure how many there were altogether, but I saw two different ones which were literally just short clips of one/both of them being upset about issues relating to Swindon Town FC.

Blue Jam

No big spoiler in that trailer, they seem to have done a good job of keeping things under wraps.

Those Swindon FC "trailers" were actually ads for the BBC Sport app:

Utter Shit

Ah that makes sense...I actually liked them as This Country trailers though, they were completely on brand and felt completely in keeping with the characters.

Has this changed? AFAICT it's just going straight on to BBC1 on Saturday night (at the silly time of 22:30).

Blue Jam

I stand corrected... I'm going to be saving this for until Mr Jam gets back from werk tomorrow night so I might just disappear off the internet for a bit. Will watch the last episode just before.

I hope Big Mandy shows up, and I really hope Kurtan's boss never found that stash of Dysons so we'll get to see more of him at the bowls club.

It's not broadcast til Saturday though, is it?

Blue Jam

BBC3 isn't broadcast anymore, remember? It's online only...  and This Country: The Aftermath is on there NOW, you bunch of fannies:

Malcy

Thought it was only ok. Is the 3rd series going to be the last?

Utter Shit

Started slowly but within a few minutes it was as good as ever IMO, I was howling throughout!

Blue Jam

So many wonderfully bleak and dark moments, even for this show... loved it. Will need a second viewing to take it all in...

"Self-medicating with Stowford's Press..."

Absolutely loved it, had me laughing right off the bat with the courtroom sketches. And that crumpets scene! "Oh good, I am glad." Lovely ending too.

Blue Jam

Ten black spiders hanging on the wall...

Yeah it definitely ramped up the bleakness - Kurtan casually taking the piss out of the old man that "chickened out" of assisted suicide was horribly funny.

olliebean

Has it ever been explained why Kurtan is called Kurtan?

Utter Shit

Well I'd assume it's because of his hair...doesn't explain the spelling though.

Blue Jam

Apparently the Cooper siblings were on a train or bus and heard someone repeatedly referring to his mate as "Kurtan" and they just found it funny. It's also a reference to his curtains, I suspect.

I always assumed the spelling came from this (well, Kurtan is a nerd):

Oh gawd yes, Angry Arthur's Dignitas Party- shades of Chris Morris' Suicide Journalist there ("He wasn't going to wriggle out of killing himself now, not now there was a book"). As for Arthur's excuse- "THEY COULDN'T GET THE NEEDLE IN, I'VE GOT SMALL VEINS", I've just realised that works on another level: suicide clinics don't do lethal injections, they give patients an overdose of barbiturates which they take orally and have to administer themselves... maybe Arthur did a Ted Crilly and blew the suicide fund in Vegas...

All that plus "He has't laughed since he was part of a squadron that carpet-bombed Dresden"; "She said she was going to drown Mr Chuckles in a bucket of bleach"; "[Martin] called the vicar a bald nonce" (bit rich coming from him who's now dead when he "looks like a shaved worm"); "My mum had [Munchausen's Syndrome], she used to put salt in my drip"... all so throwaway but all so dark...

Len's downward spiral, from being banned from the church "for washing his bits in the font" to sitting on a bench eating "CORNFLAKES!" from a food bank, was another dark thread, but just as it threatened to get a bit too bleak the cornflakes in his beard formed a ridiculous little yellow mouth...

I liked the sub-plot with Daisy and the biker gang, and the way the leader turned out to be just another Martin- living in a shed in the woods rather than a caravan in a field (I liked the detail of the mousetrap on the table- a little bit of houseproudness?), still being a boring twat while convinced he's a total legend, and doing that whole sexual bragging thing with stories which are obviously far-fetched and really quite horrible (the implication that the "Little Donny Osmond fangirls" were underage). A Martin with a few standards though.

Kerry going on about Sandra blocking her on Instagram... I just found the idea of Kerry having an Instagram account funny. What would she put on there? Photos of the tiles she smashed on the road? Her latest purchase of knock-off England merchandise?

I loved the way Kurtan started talking about heartache and being fucked over and it seemed to be about Sophie, maybe also that girl who broke his heart on the coach back from Hampton Court, before it was revealed that he was talking about his breakup with... the bowls club. I was sad to see he'd been sacked, but then the way it played out with him acting like a psycho ex was hilarious. Loved him taking the bowls fixtures so seriously too ("They're bowling like a bunch of pubes..."), obsessive Kurtan in full effect. Also the way his voice cracked and he seemed to be choking back tears every time he mentioned the bowls club- Charlie deserves a BAFTA as much as his sister. Great bit of increasingly psychotic acting here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8HDYkbumpw

Lovely ending too, with Kurtan getting his job back (YAAAAAAY MORE BOWLS CLUB) and Kerry finding a new posse in the form of her half-brothers- that's got to beat the Dump Gang.

I think this was one of the best yet, will need to rewatch a few more times as there must be loads I missed here.

it's interesting that she went to RADA and was trying to become a professional actress, while he had never acted and only did it because they couldn't find anyone else that fit the role properly. For me he's just as good, if not better, than Daisy in this. Maybe he'd be useless doing anything else though

Blue Jam

Charlie seems to be doing well at his day job as a fashion model...

Has anyone else had Kerry's "Ten Black Spiders" song in their head since Wednesday? I am glad we got to learn what happened to the remaining One Black Spider, but we're never going to be allowed to forget about the vicar's massive bollocks, are we?
