The "fun funk fusion" bands popular today (FUNk I guess lol)

You know the ones I mean; insanely proficient musicians, often instrumental compositions with guesting vocalists. A common theme is a joyous and upbeat vibe amongst the players who look like theyre having the time of their lives and not taking any of it too seriously.

My first exposure to this type of thing was being played Snarky Puppys We Like It Here on cd...I went home and sought them out on youtube, delighted to find We alike ait here was a live album, recorded both audibly and visually. What an absolute joy those vids are, everyone having so much fun and all egging eachother on when taking turns doing the most mindblowing solos. What an exceptional calibre of musicianship in one room! Something a bit Sega aboutthe tunes as well, in a good way: https://youtu.be/fuhHU_BZXSk

I do wonder how much non-musicians get out of these kind of bands; the gig of theirs I went to was sold out and packed so they must appeal beyond the "fellow musician" demographic. But with crazy paradiddles, abstract bass runs and complex guitar chords itd definitely be lost on some Id wager.

Vulfpeck have become huge, possibly as theyre a bit more accessible and feature more vocalists. Again; disgustingly good musicians, the music is just fun and exciting. This song Dean Town is something else:

I'm not too good at recognising genres and categorising different sounds etc., but I suppose the live line-up of Knower doing 'Overtime' is about right for this thread.

Ah dont be daft; this is the exact kind of thing Im talking about! Louis Cole (composer and drummer in that vid) is great; hes just released a new video that is gaining traction

And rightfully so; that bass player! I ask you!

Again, I find this music at its least uplifting and at its most spritually ascending. Always puts a schmile on my face.

A month or so after arriving in Canada, I met up with QDRPHNC for a curry and had booked a hotel in Toronto for the night so I could enjoy the nightlife. Wandering back to the hotel I heard some wacky sounding music nearby and it was some Friday night summer music event. The band were Five Alarm Funk from Vancouver and I just got sucked in - their costumes, attitude, general vibe and the music was so uplifting, funny and wacky. Like the Baghdaddies or Sleepy People (Newcastle bands) with greater musical proficiency N. American style.

This video doesn't capture the live experience and shenanigans, although some of the costumes are on show

Does Joe Armon-Jones fit here? I love his Starting Today album from earlier this year.

do BADBADNOTGOOD count in this? because I really couldn't get on with them, but maybe that's from a life spent avoiding the proficient (full disclosure: i HATE Steely Dan). they're incredibly precocious, they're also very credible and probably will never want for session/writing work once the current gravy train has passed, they get guest vocalists in too. or have i missed the point of this thread?

Yeah no need to ask if things count in here everything is welcome :) maybe I should have out jazz/funk fusion to give a wider idea.

And me? I love BBNG despite the terrible name. Absolutely shit name. Their last album IV had some great little numbers on there. I wouldnt call it particularly challenging to listen to but the drummer in particular does do some quite abstract rhythms I guess. Great suggestion!

This is wonderful! Louis Cole is an exceptionally talent fella.

I'd just like to say I'm more or less in love with Louis Cole atm

Got Dean Town on by Vulfpeck...just tremendous fun and a killer bassline. Whats not to like
