Yeah, I was a bit let down by the ending - there was a hint of explanation (“the fortune done it!”) but the story was wild enough that it was still a lark finding it all out, and I remember saying “oh shit!” when the first set of lobstermen turned up in a flashback

Still really enjoyed it.

I didn't find the story puzzling, just shallow. That summary almost immediately exposes that with "Because evil mermaids are a thing."

Still, maybe I'm giving too much of the benefit of the doubt, but I'd say with respect to the specific thing to which you refer, to me that all felt like a macguffin designed to be the catalyst for the kinds of unspeakable behaviour you see all through the story. I didn't feel it was shallow so much as quite nihilistic, and I can live with a bit of nihilism.
