I was a bit let down by the ending - there was a hint of explanation ("the fortune done it!") but the story was wild enough that it was still a lark finding it all out, and I remember saying "oh shit!" when the first set of lobstermen turned up in a flashback

Still, maybe I'm giving too much of the benefit of the doubt, but I'd say with respect to the specific thing to which you refer, to me that all felt like a macguffin designed to be the catalyst for the kinds of unspeakable behaviour you see all through the story. I didn't feel it was shallow so much as quite nihilistic, and I can live with a bit of nihilism.
