Loved S1 of Nighty Night. I really, really want to like her shows, but there was the growing realisation that the formula for every show is to just cast herself as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and make it edgy.

Why have you led me down into this wiki-tropes rabbit hole wonderland?

This. I find I increasingly enjoy the bits of her programmes that she's not in.

Sky Atlantic, is it set in the US then?

It's one of the channels cable doesn't carry. Yet another reason to sack it off and get torrenting.

Should it be called Sally4Eva?

Might turn off the homophobes in the audience.

Really? I always thought her formula was to cast herself as an unlikeable, narcissistic, self-absorbed asshole who no real human would ever go near.

Just watched the first ep - got some good points but overall it feels a bit weak

I'm just waiting for it to come on the torrents. Although it's probably one of those things that never will. I seem to recall Camping being a bugger to get hold of.

Yeah I tried to find Camping the other day and had no luck :(

It's all here

Only saw the last 15 minutes of Sally4Ever - did seem a bit Julia Davis by numbers with body double softcore lesbian porn. Bit weird.

Yes, that's where I got it eventually. Was hoping to find Sally4Ever there but no luck yet.

what was the general consensus on Hunderby over there?

Didn't realise it was Sky only. Piss. Hopefully it'll turn up somewhere.

Is Julia and Vicki Pepperdine's podcast worth a listen?

Yes! It's smashing

A free month's trial of Now TV is an option if you haven't already had one; best wait a couple of weeks first though so it doesn't run out before the end of the series.

Small Man Big Horse

It's now up on https://www.reddit.com/r/notapanelshow/ which I discovered yesterday thanks to BeardFaceMan.

Thanks, SMBH - downloading it now.

<edit> disappointingly low resolution, but it'll do in the absence of anything else. Is it really in Cinemascope format, or has it had the top and bottom cut off?

græskar

Yeah, thank you.

Objectively, I know it wasn't very good or very funny. But to me it was a joy. Very ludicrous and crude. I just love Julia Davis and I love when she plays dumb sociopaths (which is what she usually plays).

Coincidentally recently watched Lizzie and Sarah which was fantastic. Good to know she's got a new thing out!

Shame that never got past the pilot. I guess it came at Peak Blandening at the BBC.

I very rarely watch things illegally... but apparently I make exceptions for the work of Julia Davis! Rhythmically and tonally it reminds me oddly of Nathan Barley. If I'm honest with myself, I tend to feel Davis' writing benefits from a co-writer as with the best episodes of Hunderby and all of Human Remains. But, as ever, she has a great eye for human cruelty and unpleasant squicky words. Also, I find eggs inherently funny so I enjoyed the very long egg discussion, which was very juvenile! So, not great yet, but I'm holding out hope. I wasn't that taken by the first episode of Hunderby but loved it by the end.

Also, Catherine Sherperd is really reminding me of one of my friends with her facial expressions in this!

Thanks for the link, really appreciated.

I thought there was a lot more humanity in this than Camping or Nighty Night, it was a bit gentler and more sympathetic which made the moments of weirdness more shocking and surprising. A different kind of pace than pretty much else I can think of. Not funny exactly but Davis' creations rarely are - they're more like a kind of anti-sitcom where you find yourself empathising with even the most messed up characters and situations.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Malcy

Found it quite boring this week compared to the first episode.

Shaky

Lads, lads, lads. Lads. Let's not play coy. How naughty is it?
