You might say Glover was a weak point but he does enough for me. One gripe I have is he stands toe to toe with the Predator towards the end and doesn't get his head ripped straight off whereas in the first Predator film a scene like that would be explained better.

I dunno - Glover wins out of sheer luck, and isn't the Predator in 2 a young beginner?

Thing is, Danny G. is an unconventional lead for this sort of film. Hell, how many films this high-profile were being headlined by black actors in 1990? Denzel, Samuel L. and Morgan weren't even the household names they are now: DW was just getting there after Glory and Mo' Better Blues, with Ricochet to come; SLJ was about to have his big break with Jungle Fever; MF had Glory too already, and Driving Miss Daisy, but was yet to establish his brand in Prince of Thieves.

After Silverado, Lethal Weapon and Grand Canyon, I loved that this was Glover's big chance at fronting a picture; it's just a shame that he never really got another film like this again.

Dunno but that abattoir scene is a shameless ripoff of the carnage kickoff scene in Aliens. Cocky humans with their expensive toys getting their sphincter removed through their mouth. Which I have no problem with, homages/ripoffs are inevitable and you might as well copy the best.

As an action flick you can't ask for much more, over the top gangsters, a mean looking villain with extra toys and the ship at the end which goes some way to explaining why the Predator was there. It's got more in common with Aliens in many respects. Some people will not like the cheesy dialogue, the explanation of the mystery or the different setting but I happen to love Aliens.

Some people complain about the rasta old guy in the alley but that just adds to the schlock action flick appeal for me. I think I might have seen this before the original but a recent rewatch was good fun and if it hold up it holds up. Certainly a worthy companion piece for the original Predator film and given it didn't have Arnie I think it's as good as you could expect. Surely as good or better than any Predator films that came after it and a lads on the beer VHS popcorn classic.

Beyond taking in a bunch of favourite action tropes from the previous few years as well the film is basically a greatest hits of late 80's character actors isn't it? Paxton, Conchita Alonso Davi and Busey re visiting their characters from Aliens, Running Man, Diehard and Lethal Weapon.

I never had a big problem with Glover standing up to the Predator as it was generally down to circumstance.

I would say as well that like Robocop 2 its the only sequel of its franchise that really felt inline with the tone of the original, that film still had the cynical politics, this one still had the lovecraftian warriors trial.

Some days I prefer P2 to P1 honestly, it's got more craziness in it, and Glover is more sympathetic than Arnie for me. The og is a tight, classical beast, of course.

There's a load of reasons why the original film is millions times better than the sequel, but I think the quality of the puppetry and effects speaks volumes.

The original is on the left, P2 the right.

I know this isn't a particularly insightful comment, but the predator alien is such a cool design.

The Bumlord

Crikey, those two gifs are an eye opener.

I bloody love practical effects, especially slightly slimy ones.

Anyway, Predator 2. My friend at school had it on VHS and lent it to me. He was a bit perturbed that a certain part of the film was static-besmirched and unviewable upon return. Look, I was 14.

What teenager hasn't repeatedly abused themselves to scenes of jamaican gangsters being eviscerated by a predator?

The Bumlord

Don't be ridiculous. I had a big wank over Danny Glover looking scared

The Kingston Times always wonders why their crime section gets so much late night traffic.

The Bumlord

As an aside, I've been to Kingston* a couple of times, and at no point was I either gangstered or Predatorised.

Channel 5 screened it in the soft core porn film time slot on Friday night once, and that scene was the only way I was going to see women's breasts that week.
