I am in awe of Mike Love's new "music video"

Mike Love, famous perhaps as villain member of The Beach Boys as well as my featured avatar now has a new Christmas album out.

The title track Reason For The Season now has an OFFICIAL music video uploaded onto his YouTube channel.
Never mind that the song utilises the Shortenin' Bread riff for it's melody, just watch it and be in awe.

If you thought his remake of 'Do It Again' with John Stamos was fantastic then this is the record for you!

Just check out that glorious flash animation

It's like one of those crappy Half Man Half Biscuit fan videos that were all the rage 10 years ago, except it's an official video!

One wouldn't want to confuse it with all those bootleg versions that will inevitably follow!

lazarou

Well that's certainly a thing. Is there an inside joke I'm missing or did that animator not actually know what mistletoe is?

Nowhere Man

I just want to know who was commissioned to make this, at least if it was one of his grandchildren or something it wouldn't be so bad. Never mind that Mike was happy enough with it to use it to promote his music!

Nowhere Man

and to think, just last week Mike was meeting up with The Donald at the White House

Thanks for sharing this, it's bloody great.

I hate the fact that Mike likes Trump. You'd think being Mr Environmental he'd be more discerning. Boo.

He's a man of contradictions indeed. Much more of an unanswerable riddle than Brian Wilson imo. I often wonder if Mike believes in climate change. Maybe he's trying to sell it to Trump in that photo hence DJT's unconvinced expression.

Can't forget this classic Beach Boys hit too

Honestly i'm not sure any other hugely popular band has consistently towed the line between brilliance and dreadfulness over a 60 year period, but the ongoing Beach Boys soap opera is infinitely entertaining.

If Mike hadn't got into all that transcendental meditation stuff I struggle to think how different he would have ended up.

Nowhere Man

Actually, I forgot about that time in March 1970 Mike had quite a break down of his own. (just the year after Brian was hospitalised!)

Perversely, I rather like its honesty and spartan production values all round.

Why have you done this to me, I'm gonna be singing the reason for the cunting season for the next fourteen years now

"Have you got your cock again out, Mike?"
"Nope, just being whimsical."

Also, Mike seems have inherited Brian's obsession with the Shortenin' Bread melody.

QuoteAlex Chilton recalls receiving middle-of-the-night phone calls from Wilson asking him to sing on a recording of "Shortenin' Bread". Chilton remembers: "He was telling me I have the perfect voice for it." Micky Dolenz wrote of in his autobiography that while tripping on LSD with Wilson, John Lennon, and Harry Nilsson, he remembers Wilson playing "Shortenin' Bread" on piano "over and over again". Elton John and Iggy Pop were mutually bemused by an extended, contumacious Wilson-led singalong of "Shortenin' Bread", leading Pop to flee the room proclaiming, "I gotta get out of here, man. This guy is nuts!"

Here's a Brian Wilson/Beach Boys timeline of recordings using variations of that riff

Doobie Brother Skunk Baxter has let himself go.

Oh.

I know there's been something of a re-evaluation of Love as a musician and human being in recent years - I'm OK with and even respect that, but every image and article I've ever seen of him still make me think he's an absolute cunt. An important cunt with a sliver of talent, but still a cunt .

I don't think it's that complicated. He's likely a complete prat who has, on occasion, got behind some worthy causes to make himself look better.

Posted it before but this seems relevant. Mike Love's lifestyle narrated by Steve Coogan.

Going by the collaborations on his new album, I'm assuming Mike is related to Hanson in some way:

1 Celestial Celebration
2 Finally It's Christmas (feat. Hanson)
3 Little St. Nick
4 Must Be Christmas (with Ambha Love & Christian Love)
5 Jingle Bell Rock
6 Alone On Christmas Day
7 Reason For The Season
8 Do You Hear What I Hear (with All Love)
9 Away in a Manger (with All Love)
10 Bring a Torch (feat. Hayleigh Love & Brian Love)
11 O Come All Ye Faithful (with All Love)
12 O Holy Night (with All Love)

I think it's more likely that's he's a prat who sincerely believes in some worthy causes, while lacking the intellectual depth or self-awareness to pick up on the illogical nature of a transcendentally meditative, peace-loving eco-warrior getting behind Trump and the transparently hypocritical sanctity of good old-fashioned conservative American values.

Cognitive dissonance in a baseball cap.

Yes, could be that.

What a brilliant hilarious thread. Far be it from me to mock mental illness but some glorious stuff in here. I especially loved Iggy Pop's nervy escape. I once played the Bugsy Malone soundtrack for about ten hours on a loop and my mate nearly had a breakdown there and then so I sympathise with Iggy and empathise with Brian. Great stuff.

Ah fuck I must have my you tube settings on high quality
That piece of shit just ran through a full months data allowance
Cheers Mike

The best part is "Love's the most powerful weapon we've got" when the font for "Love's" strongly suggests they are in fact referring to Mike Love himself.

no the best parts are the "AH-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"'s;
Mike driving the tiny van full of too many people, that moment where levitating, mediating Mike accidentally meditates on top of the van,

the fact that cartoon Mike Love has to have Love on his hat to make sure you don't mistake him for any old random ginger man meditating (looks more like his brother Stan tbh).

And yet......  In spite of it all.......

Just listen to his bass vocals on the choruses of the a cappella version of 'Anna Lee The Healer' from the very recent 'Wake The World' collection. That's the kind of thing that first springs to my mind whenever someone mentions Mike Love.
