Buying a chain of gyms doesn't make sense to me either. During a recession when people start trying to make savings cancelling their gym membership is often the first thing they do. Recently the entire country has had to adapt to working out at home while the gyms are closed and I can't see everyone flooding back, especially as people have been panic-buying bikes and free weights and running machines.

I walked past my local The Gym last night and it was absolutely heaving in there. A large proportion of the clientele aren't just there to exercise for exercise's sake, it's also about socialising and getting access to very expensive equipment for a relatively low cost.

I think your midrange chains will suffer, but the budget gyms will be just fine. I suspect Ashley will do as he's done with all of his businesses and transition DW to the budget model whilst keeping prices as high as the DW name can muster.

In Stockport, that and Game used to be next door to each other, which reminded me of in 'Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield' where you had all the wine/charcoal merchants located in a row.

Same, I went on Monday and it was fairly packed, plus they had the kids back doing swimming lessons. I do have a crosstrainer at home but the gym ones are better, and I'm more motivated to exercise when I'm there. My gym is a social hub as well.
