What are you reviewing? I thought there was only one episode to date: the pilot.

First episode leaked (see up thread)

For those of us, upstanding citizens who choose to wait for the official broadcast, here's the trailer:

This is going to be brilliant.

As Blumf mentioned the first episode leaked on to youtube and I quick downloaded it, if you want to see it let me know I'll send you a mediafire link.

"The Purple Nurple" was fantastic. PFFR have such a talent for making the most anguished or traumatising situations surreally funny. The "peekaboo" scene where it gets super intense and there's a bunch of jarring, noisy close-up shots of the kid covering her eyes was somehow hilarious to me, the fucking batshit audacity of it. Ditto the boss in the random number company: while his employee suffers the deeply unpleasant news that a strange creature is birthing loud, screaming offspring in his head, the boss just acts like he's irritated by his demeanour. It's simultaneously dark and disquieting yet amusingly absurd. Hysterical, which is just my cup of tea. There's no dark recess of the mind, body or soul they fail to scratch and pick away at, and once again they've hit the ground running.

May I have a link to this link too, please, pretty please?

Some interesting stuff in the credits. Title design is by one of my favourite current artists Robert Beatty (you may recognise his work on a lot of album covers from Tame Impala, Thee Oh Sees, The Flaming Lips and many more), "Long Lankin Vocals" provided by Will Oldham, AKA Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and there are two carpenters also credited for their work.

Much like the mysterious egg-laying creature, I can't get this thing out of my head, and this is some especially high acclaim when you consider I'm also currently watching Twin Peaks. December 9th can't come around soon enough.

The entire season is now up online, Adult Swim has scattered around them the place as part of an online scavenger hunt.

Oh wow, thanks for that, it's hugely appreciated, I can't wait to finish work now.

Incredible, thanks so much!

Bring back Karma for this post alone.

I've never been so happy to be home from work! You are my Master now, Master Cylinder.

Ah, this is very very good judging by the pilot. Gorgeous but hilarious-looking. Feels like the show I've been waiting for since Xavier.

zomgmouse

Oh my godddd these are amazing. Adored them so much. Glorious and dark and full of existential flow. Like if Anomalisa were a sketch show or if Don Hertzfeldt made Robot Chicken. Really dug this so much. Ahhhhhhhh. Beautiful.

This definitely fills in the Xavier shaped hole that's been missing since 2009.

The cast is fairly high profile for such a strange TV show (David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Trey Parker, Jordan Peele, Jonah Hill, etc). I wonder whether Louis CK was originally meant to appear pre-wankbeastgate - as he was a long time collaborator with Vernon Chatman.

Any thoughts on why PFFR has shifted over the years to be seemingly more Chatman auteurist oriented?

(judging by the credits and the fact that Shivering Truth reminds me more of Mindsploitation and Final Flesh than, say, Wonder Showzen)

John Lee seems to do more work as a director for various non-PFFR projects these days.  He even directed the recent Pee Wee Herman movie.

Retinend

I'm most of the way through and I haven't laughed much. It's certainly a lot less accessible than the pilot promised. It might be the strangest thing they have ever done, including Final Flesh.

Retinend

There's something unsettling about the constant theme of child abuse.

PFFR does the thing of an idea turning in on itself better than anyone.

Here's Chatman in an interview delving a little into the process of the show.

It's one of the rare interviews where he actually gives out real information.

Chatman also seems to have a bit of an obsession with gushing wounds and giving birth. Every episode prominently features gore and there's at least three unusual pregnancies in the entire series.

I found this part of the interview linked above interesting. I'd agree with Chatman that the show is a comedy first and foremost but when the themes are so frequently dark and disturbing it's not unreasonable to assume that there's more to it than just trying to make people laugh.

I'm also struggling to think of moments that weren't incredibly dark or negative.

QuoteDo you see this show as more nihilistic or optimistic because I think for the most part things tend to go sour in these stories, but I'm curious of your take on the show's point of view?

It's really just comedy. It's certainly not like, "Hey, this is my way to tell the world to fuck off and that life is a grinding place." No, it's just what's the most exciting idea and what's the most exciting place for it to go. One of the things about this show was to not make it all incredibly dark or negative. The point is that it's varied with where the comedy takes it.

The fourth episode had a couple, what with the boy refusing to sign the contract and so getting a happy ending, as does the previously chained up man who emerges through the giant hand, and the couple suffering from Constadeath earlier on have a positive outcome, once they've transformed in to different people at least.

Is the Solidface episode a happy ending?

Yeah, I guess, I mean he has to spend all eternity pointing a gun at the sea but at least he doesn't die (and his shitty father does) so that could be considered a bit of a win.

The episode 'Tow and Shell' seems to have disappeared off youtube, does anyone have it?

Edit: Thanks SMBH

Small Man Big Horse

I've got it, I'll upload it to mediafire now and send you a pm.

Sin Agog

Can you copy and paste it to me, too, SMBH?  Massive thanks in advance if so.
