Great Opening Credits

The opening credits for Flash Gordon are very impressive: love the idea of flicking through cuts from the original comics as a way to introduce each character.  Marvel actually used this same idea for the first Sam Raimi Spiderman film, and it worked very well there too.

The opening credits to Superman are my favourite.

Richard Donner apparently jerks off to this at least once a day.  At any rate I would if I was him.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJGhCgC91aM

Se7en (1995): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEq-4fua3lM - I'd never seen anything quite like this at the time and it creeped the absolute shit out of me.

Bazooka

Sorry in my phone, but The Omega Man is beautiful, Heston cruising through dead L.A firing at some ghouls.

Neomod

The Knack and How to Get It (1965)

A hypnotizing John Barry Theme, a Braun SK55 and a house full of Dollybirds.

Dreamlike.

I nearly forgot my favourite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_tGvktfjjk

Just the simplicity of it. So damn creepy and immediately sets the tone.

Se7en, still brilliantly effective 23 years later and possibly the most influential credits sequence of all time. Only slightly let down by leaving in that Trent Reznor line at the end, making them a bit too on-the-nose, but great regardless.

Raising Arizona, coming as they do about 15 minutes into the film after you've forgotten there's supposed to be credits.

I'd say the 70's was really the golden age for opening credits.

The opening to Taxi Driver might be my favourite bit of it.

Stalker was pretty conventional but still that theme in the grungy bar is magical.

Plus of course Alien, sets up the film perfectly.

The opening to The 'Burbs blew my mind when I was a kid and I still love it. Shame I can't find a good quality copy of it to show as this version's compression has lost all the detail and smoothness in the transition but it's better than nothing-

I also like Re-Animator with its striking colourful medical illustrations & slightly more rockin' version of the Psycho theme-

Oh yeah, the Burbs was a great one, pre-CG as well.

Big fan of The Conversation's slowly zooming surveillance credits, with the innocuous "Red Red Robin" playing and the distortion and everything. Sets up the film perfectly.

Also the something like fifteen-minute-long one in Once Upon a Time in the West always gets me. So expertly drawn out and tense and relaxed at the same time.

Love Delicatessen's slow crawl round the rubbish dump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSo5emPa5Zs

Also really love Valerian's "shaky hands" David Bowie opening - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6oTziHKM_c - properly set me up to watch a great film. Shame it's utterly awful from this point on :-(

Bazooka

Mad Max 2; a beautiful bit of exposition then bam the best film logo conceived shoots on the screen in steel glory, then straight into mad road porn. Glorious.

Touch of Evil's opening credits are fun. At least, I think the credits occur during the opening seq.

Also, there's a film that opens with a birdseye-view of a city grid from far above and the camera moves along the grid as the credits roll. No idea what the film was, but really liked the shot.

Whenever this topic comes up, it's always this for me...

Candyman (1992)

Doesn't that Michael Mann film start with the birds eye view as well? The one with Tom Cruise as the hitman and Jamie Foxx as the taxi driver.

A birds eye view over night-time LA or Newyork is surely one of the most common opening credits choices.

Enemy Of The State starts off with high-level surveillance footage of cities, before cutting to news camera and CCTV footage

It's true. But it does seem that Candyman holds the b-eye shot the longest and turns something ordinary into something quite nifty. The shot stuck in my head, whereas the actual film did not.

Also, maybe the original Funny Games (haven't seen the remake) does this too (on a country road?) but I'm not one to time scenes with a stop-watch.

Every opening to every show should be like the Brady Bunch's multiple screens thingy

Every show. Ice Road Truckers. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Claimed and Shamed.
